More and more parents are talking about homeschooling their children in the wake of the three school shootings in the past week. Is it any wonder? I too would be thinking of making the switch if I hadn't already.
Witness the article from KSL.com (Salt Lake City Radio/TV station), School Violence Putting a Focus on Homeschooling. I made a couple of comments, although I haven't seen them up there yet. In summary, I advised parents to fully consider homeschooling, but not to jump into it just because they're afraid of another school shooting. They need to realize that homeschooling is work, that it takes committment. They also probably don't see all of the benefits and hazards like a homeschooling parent might, so they need to seek out homeschooling parents they know and talk with them about it. Books are helpful, but they're no replacement for a seasoned veteran that knows the territory.
Homeschooling is like pioneering. Maps exist, but not all the roads are smooth and some lead into rough territory. It takes seasoned guides who can come along side the greenhorns just starting out. Seek them out. Start by leaving a comment with your state's Homeschool Nation blog (scroll down the right-side column for your state). They will likely know of one or two homeschool support groups or seasoned veterans in your area. If nothing else, shoot me a comment letting me know your questions. I might even be able to answer them or point you in the right direction.
