School System Not Designed To Protect Your Child
Posted in Homeschooling
The
school bus accident in Alabama is a tragedy. The question on some peoples minds might be Why didnt they have seat belts on the bus? Seat belts are not included on most school buses because the assumption is that the bus has so much mass that small vehicles such as cars and SUVs will not damage it. I personally saw this principle in action in March, 1998 when a Honda Civic collided with a school bus during a blizzard. The Honda was totaled, but the bus barely showed a scratch.
But what happens when an almost-irresistible force meets an immovable object like a concrete barrier? Unfortunately, the bus loses. More importantly, four families have lost their children. For me, its a painful reminder that the public school system is all about producing crops of citizens, not engineered for working with individuals. The system is full of curves, averages and statistics. But when it comes down to individuals, there are no guarantees your child will be safe
or well-educated. Witness these latest examples:

I dont live near Huntsville but I am from Alabama and sat glued to the TV as this story was being covered. It was a horrible accident. Several other students are in critical condition so there might end up being more bereaved families.
When my nephew was in kindergarten, he got hepatitis B from his teacher. He is diabetic and he became infected when she checked his blood sugar. (She didnt properly wash her hands before pricking his finger).
You kind of expect children to be exposed to some things when they are in the puplic system, you dont expect to put their life as risk.. but it seems that more and more lives are being risked.

I was just going to say, things like this encouraged my decision to homeschool (although fear wasn't my reason for homeschooling), but with everything now these stories make me just want to pray for the kids in public school. How many of these kids are there without a choice? Either their parents or the government or someone told them to go, and there is really nothing they can do or say to change that. How awesome the responsibility to parents to really take a look at what is best for OUR kids and make those decisions...and to pray for our kids who can't be home, and for those around them.

Another tragedy. Kids in a playground at a daycare centre were mowed down when a car was in a collision and went through the fence right into the slide. Kids rushed to the hospital. All I could think of, again and again, was that was why I never put my kids in daycare. The school system is the same thing. Nobody loves our kids like we do. We need to take care of them.
