Dreaming of a White (Out) Christmas

Posted in Fatherhood

Thwock!

If you could hear weather systems, that's the sound it would make for Colorado right now. The whole eastern half of the state has been just belted with a snowstorm. Blizzard warnings, winter storm warnings and wind-chill in the single digits for most places is the order of the day today. It's amazing, but some places are actually staying open. They're insane. There's no reason to be out in this stuff.

When I was working full-time, I dreaded these days. My employer was notorious for staying open, no matter what. You could walk up to your supervisor with a blizzard warning and they would ask you if you wanted to take paid vacation time or sick time to go home early. Snow just didn't seem to register on their radar.

Now I sit at home, slurping down coffee in my PJs and watch the flakes come down. Then I realize... I have work to do! Argh! Working from home has its advantages, but taking snow days isn't one of them. Granted, it's part-time work, but unless the power goes out (please, stay on) I have no reason to stop work.

On the other hand, the benefits of staying home for work are many and varied. I can take breaks whenever I need to, and with my back, I need frequent breaks to lie down and take pressure off my back. I have my children around, which is usually a good thing. My wife is a wonderful support to me, rubbing my back, grabbing coffee when I can't get it myself. She's so good to me. I can rock out to Christmas tunes without donning earphones because everyone want's hear ...except when I get the urge in July or August. My children love dancing to the carols. I'm watching my 3 year-old daughter imitating my wife wrapping Christmas presents by placing a Christmas book in her treasured blanket and wrapping up. She just presented it to her mom. I would miss so much if I was out in this storm!

On second thought... who says I can't call a snow day? I'm the boss. As long as I get the work done later, everyone will be happy. There are some things I just don't want to miss.
