Posted in Connecting with God
I think it's easy to expect too much from a world that doesn't know God or his love for us. Somehow, we Christians are so used to keeping things "Biblical" that we can fail to encourage qualities that emulate our God and help them understand what God wants for us.
Every year around Christmas, a story circulates through e-mail about a man trying to get birds in a barn. Few people cite Louis Cassels, who wrote The Parable of the Birds in 1959. Click here for the full story. Whether it's true or not, I don't know. Still, it's a powerful reminder that God sometimes has to speak through our own desires in order to show us his own love for us. If we Christians frown on the tools that God can use to show his glory and draw us to his throne, what does that benefit anyone? We should praise those things that do good and be ready with words or actions that show others the way God loves us. As St Francis (St. Frank, as Rich Mullins called him) said "Preach the gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words."
Rich Mullins was a great guy (click here) who wrote Awesome God and Sing Your Praise to the Lord. However, the most significant impact he had was on those who knew him personally, judging by the tribute albums and songs written (including Michael W. Smith's Song For Rich - click here). Few people know that he lived on a southwest Indian reservation and taught kids music. He didn't make a big deal about it. He just did it. Serving these kids was a way for him to communicate the love of his Savior. Being able to communicate God's love with my skills is something I aspire to...just like I would if I were a designer or carpenter on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (click here).
