Data Loss and Primal Screaming
Posted in Blog Management
It's one of those days. I was typing a long
post for my blog right in the "Add New Entry" window. I had worked for
an hour on it, so I broke away for a minute to check on something. When
I did, I inadvertantly told Windows to check the web for something.
Oh NO! Windows
commandeered my browser window for it's little quest. I hit the back
button, but too late to save my work. It was gone. Yes, that was me you
heard screaming.
There are ways to combat this, of course (the data loss, not the screaming):
- The first way of course is to "Save As Draft." I would be a big
fan of this, but it takes me away from the entry screen and also
removes the option of sending the post to my mailing list.
- Work in Word. This allows you to save your data as well as use
the features like spell check. Unfortunately, depending on your version
of Word, it can lead to some unintended formatting results when you
paste back into the entry field.
- Take steps to prevent applications from commandeering your
browser. In Mozilla Firefox, you can click on Tools, Options, go to the
Advanced pane and then change the setting for "Open links from other
applictions" to something other than the "most recent window" setting.
This is really a good idea because of how extensively forms are being
used on the web, like blogging, banking, and buying on eBay.
I will rewrite my post. Hopefully, it will be even better than it was
before. That and get some juice for my sore throat. I really shouldn't
scream like that...
hehehe...that happened to me yesterday...notice there is STILL no new entry? I can't even remember what it was about anymore but I bet it was GOOD, yeah...real good...

Just had the same thing happen this morning. I'll probably re-do the post, but I'm just too depressed now...
