While our thought processes are highly complex, our emotions are basic and straight forward. We feel angry, we feel sad, we feel happy, we feel love or some combination of these and a few others. I'm beginning to realize that while we may sing great songs of sophisticated meaning and muli-layered imagery, some of the best worship songs are the most basic. Take Amazing Love by Billy James Foote.
I'm forgiven because You were forsaken
I'm accepted, You were condemned
I'm alive and well, Youre spirit lives within me
Because You died and rose again
Amazing Love, how can it be?
That You, my King, would die for me
Amazing Love, I know it's true
And it's my joy to honor You
In all I do, I honor You
You are my King
Jesus, You are my King
Jesus, You are my King
Jesus, You are my King
It's simple and direct, and it embraces what many of us feel for the Savior who died for us. These simple bleetings of His sheep truly touch His heart. To try to say more could ruin it.
True worship is setting aside ourselves and our aversion for "trite" or "sappy" expressions of love and remember that God gave us these hearts and minds to embrace Him, not turn up our noses at anything that doesn't suit our mood.
One final thought... My daughter is two. While she understands a great deal, she is still learning to talk. There are times when she comes in all excited about something and I can maybe pick out one or two words...maybe. She wants to tell me everything, all at once. If she can learn to focus on the simple expressions first, I'll understand her more and communication will be much more meaningful, both to me and to her. In the same way, worship is communication. The meaning is found in both the sender and the receiver and both benefit from communicating with the other.
