Never Say They're Too Young
Posted in Homeschooling
My friend and fellow homeschooling dad
Andy has his sons reading the US Constitution. This isn't remarkable
except for the fact that they are 4th grade and lower. While I studied
US history in school at that age, we never would have considered
tackling the constitution directly. The standard argument is that kids
are too young to understand these things.
As
Harry Morgan's Col. Sherman Potter from MASH would say, "Horsefeathers!" Translation: there's no such thing.
Now I won't be handing my 6 year-old son a book on calculus and telling
him to go nuts with it, but he has read an amazing amount of books for
a boy his age and he plays chess with care and forethought. Because
math and chess are related, maybe it won't be too long before he needs
that calculus book.
Tonight, my 2 year-old daughter beat her mom and her brother at
Uno.
*I*
had nothing to do with it (aside from genetics). I would have said she
was too young to play cards. Yet, she beats them with only one help
from her mom. God seems to have given me my children to tell me that
nothing is impossible with him.
Never say they're too young. Perhaps they are; perhaps they aren't. You never know until you let them try.
Four moves, huh? I wish your brother would teach me that trick. Don't worry about embarrassing yourself. I seldom win because I play very intuitively instead of thinking through all possibilities.
My son would be glad to teach your son the next time you're in Colorado. You might be able to save the gas for a trip if you checked around your support group (you do have one, I hope) for other families interested in learning chess. An informal chess party might even generate some interest. It's a great social opportunity and a great way for other homeschooling dads to get involved.
You helped me decide...I will post on chess today.
