Oprah to Homeschoolers: Keep Out Of Our Essay Contest
Posted in Homeschooling
Oprah has made the news again, but it's not in a good way. WorldNetDaily.com just put out a
news alert (click here) with the headline
Oprah's Essay Contest Excluded Homeschoolers. The rules state in fine print:
Contest
open to all legal residents of the US, who are currently enrolled
full-time (and in good standing) in a public or state-accredited
private or parochial school, grades 9–12.
Michael Smith, President of the HSLDA, contacted the show and was rebuffed. He details his objection in
an open letter to Oprah Winfrey.
This is disappointing. This is yet another area where homeschooling
children are treated as second-rate students. I would have expected
more from someone who was considered by the History Channel to be one
of the top 100 Americans of All Time. Why make this exclusion? Like
Smith says, it only serves to keep out those who would excel at such an
essay. Are they afraid of competition? Are they simply ignorant? Its as
if they intentionally singled out the one branch of education that is
encountering the wildest forms of success.
I don't watch
Oprah...ever. I once admired her success, but now it seems to me she's
just as ignorant as the rest of the nation about the nature of
homeschooling.
What others are saying about Oprah and her treatment of homeschoolers:

When I first read the email, I thought 'aren't we private schools? It didn't exclude us.., I guess we're not accredited, so it does exclude us..' Then I just figured that she was trying to challenge those that are not homeschoolers, because the homeschoolers have already proven to be good at these kinds of things. We don't need to worry about being glorified by the world anyway. We're God's people! We just need to glorify Him, and that's not going to happen on any Oprah show.

This is a good opportunity for homeschoolers to write her some KIND and POLITE letters asking Oprah to reconsider her position. She just needs a little reminder that there are other "minorities" out there besides racial minorities. With some tact and effort now, she'll be more sensitive to homeschoolers next time she runs a contest like this.

Well, I was going to suggest that maybe the stipulations excluded homeschoolers because the prize was something like a monetary grant to their school or a new computer room or 1000 new books for the school's library or something like that. But, I just went to her website to view the prizes and they are prizes that are appropriate for an individual and not for a whole institution (school). Hmmm. Maybe it was intended instead to exclude drop-outs and not homeschoolers. I don't know, I'm no Oprah expert (or watcher, for that matter), but I know that "love hopes all things, believes all things," and I'm trying to find the "benefit of the doubt" here. Maybe all it will take is for someone to point out to her that her definition excluded homeschoolers. Don't you think it was unintentional, too? I mean, drop-outs are a valid group to exclude in an academic contest. Maybe that was her primary motive. Just thinking "out loud."
Many blessings!

on essays. The author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" has done more for Western civilization with one book than Oprah ever will... and it turns out she LIKES homeschoolers!
