In a moral victory for Oprah-lovers and homeschoolers, HSLDA
has received a letter and a phone call from a representative for Oprah
saying that the exclusion of homeschoolers from her much-vaunted essay
contest was an oversight. While I wonder why Mike Smith of the HSLDA was rebuffed in the first place, I'm glad to see that Oprah sees homeschooling as a valid education.
It still won't get me to watch her show.
Still, this is important to homeschooling families because sooner or later--probably sooner--a homeschooler will win the essay contest. When they do, more people will learn that homeschoolers are brighter than the average student and they will perceive it as a valid method of education. As the perception shifts, momentum toward homeschooling will as well. This will make it easier to pass homeschool friendly legislation and provide more opportunities for government-schooled students to escape those failing institutions.
