Apr. 10, 2007 - Redecorating The White House
In preparing for our trip to Washington D.C. in a couple weeks, we've been reading a lot of library books about D.C. and the people represented there. I found a paper today my kindergartener had done. It says "Washington D.C." and has a drawing of both the Capitol and the Washington Monument. (She really is quite the artist, by the way. Far better than me.) On the other side, she has drawn the White House ("Wit House") and it reads:
gren roum
red roum
blue roum
I wus theecen a wit roum.
Apparently my little interior decorator was thinking that what the mansion is missing is a white room.
And in case you were wondering, Abruhm Lecin wus a good man.

Whoa. My first grader wouldn't even know WHAT the Washington Monument was. You're a great teacher/tour guide. And the White house doesn't have a White room? Well, we should just fix that.

I thought of a good book for you all to read before Mt. Vernon. It's called "Why Not? Lafayette" by Jean Fritz. It will really enhance your visit to the museum there and it's a pretty easy kids read.
Apr. 11, 2007 - D.C. Recommendations

I've been wanting to post about it, but I don't know if I'll get around to it before you go to D.C. I'm not sure if you're aware of them, but I would highly recommend visiting The Einstein Memorial, an out of the way spot that most people don't know about that is great for family photos: http://www.nasonline.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ABOUT_building_einstein_memorial
and The Building Museum: http://www.nbm.org/

Awww, thanks for the sweet comment on my blog.
I'm so excited for your trip. I'm pretty far away from D.C. but there is nothing I would like more than to hop in a motor home and travel to the east to see all of our nations history. Hoping you have a grand trip!

We lived less than an hour outside of D.C. for 4 years, so we got to take advantage of some of the lesser frequented attractions. There's so much to see that you just can't do it all in one vacation. And there are all the things that you must do: Washington Monument, Capitol, Supreme Court, Lincoln & Jefferson Memorials, the FDR Memorial is cool, the WWII Memorial is awesome! But there are so many more neat places. As much as I love being back in Indiana, I really miss being out there! We did a lot, but there was still so much we didn't do (Williamsburg, Jamestown, Mt. Vernon,).
I hope it's a great trip!

How cool- my husband just started researching a trip to D.C.- maybe you could share some of your favorite (pre-planning) sites/books! He is thinking of going in May.
Love to hear where you are staying, as my husband is wondering if we should stay in the D.C. area or if we should venture out a few minutes to make it more affordable (we need two hotel rooms now! ;-)
This will be our first trip-with 6 kids that is an adventure right?
