We carry an excellent book from Crimson Books, and today you get the opportunity to learn more about the company through an interview with the owner, Thomas Mayhew.
Give us a general overview of your company and the products you sell through the Schoolhouse Store.
Crimson Books began in part as an answer to the question "How can we help others?" Crimson Books, as a small company, is very happy to serve the homeschooling community and anyone else we can help. Our offerings primarily fall in the health, wealth and self categories. Our goal is to publish more of our own materials. We believe we offer top-notch materials that aren't always carried at larger businesses or organizations.
My wife and I are writers and editors. At the moment, our solitary product for homeschoolers is, "What Every High Schooler Should Know About Credit and Finance" written by Dr. Jarrod J. Williamson.

Tell us an interesting fact or story about your company.
It is because of my friend Jarrod's thoughtfulness that we remained, or, should I say, got back in touch with each other some years after we both graduated from college. He found out my mother was very sick and we didn't know what to do for her and neither did the doctors. My mom's financial situation was grim. I was helping as much as I could. And Jarrod, out of his poverty, sent me $100 earmarked specifically for her. That touched me. You have to understand that Jarrod lost his mother to cancer when we were in school together. He loved his mom and naturally had a soft spot for sick moms. Jarrod, at that time, was working on his doctorate at UCLA in chemical engineering. He was surviving on borrowed money, just focused on that graduation day and becoming a teacher, his passion.
Without going into detail, he got buried under a mountain of debt. By God's grace, he recovered. Because he is such an incredibly gifted researcher, he figured out a BUNCH of cool stuff about how credit works and how to get out of trouble AND how to avoid it in the first place.
I asked him if he would be interested in writing a book we could publish and then we decided, "Hey, we are homeschoolers". Wouldn't we want this book for our home school high schooler?" The answer was a resounding "yes," so we created "What Every High Schooler Should Know About Credit and Finance".
The funny thing is that we figured that parents need this information too. So for a homeschool family to purchase this book, we feel it is a great value. The parents get the peace of mind that their kids learn about credit and finance from a practical perspective. AND the parents can read the book too which might be a good idea so they can quiz their high schooler for understanding.
That gives the parent the opportunity to impart further knowledge and perhaps share a story from personal experience that could generate a life-long impression. We all tend to remember stories really well.
How can your products best benefit the homeschooling community?
"What Every High Schooler Should Know about Credit and Finance" is a tremendous and reliable resource for imparting life changing information for those getting near to leaving the immediate availability of a wise parent in a stable environment. This book will help keep a young person from making financial mistakes that would undermine their future.
Beyond this book, we offer a bunch of health related books, such as "The Key to Ultimate Health." Why is this book significant? It is a compilation of outstanding research on health that will astound you. Our purpose of this book is to see people turn to a new form of dentistry that is TRULY preventative.
We also offer DVDs on health that are educational and, frankly, would be helpful to homeschoolers and, really, any family. My son, at six years old, really enjoyed watching Dr. Hansen's DVD entitled "The Dental Root System."
How many kids understand how the dental root system works? That in itself is motivating to him. I'm one of those parents that believe it's worth the price of an educational DVD to improve a child's understanding and care of his or her body. That's a value that lasts a lifetime.
What new items can we expect to see from your company in the next year?
We have a lot of ideas and since we believe in "steady plodding" we will have more original material out in the coming year and future years, God willing.
As mentioned, we are big on health and financial themes. We've written health articles that are available on our website, on a blog and various other places around the Internet. I am writing a book that I intend to publish this year titled "Making and Saving Money in America."
Another book that we have in the pipeline for 2009 is about mercury poisoning. While certainly not a normal part of homeschooling curricula, probably a good number of people are quite familiar with the potential for mercury poisoning through inoculations.
Mercury poisoning almost took my life. In my case, the major source of mercury poisoning was through my amalgam fillings.
I'll be very transparent with you, I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy what I went through as a result of mercury poisoning related to dental amalgam.
By God's grace, I'll get that book out this next year. It's a big job in both terms of work and sheer emotion involved.
As mentioned, we also offer other tremendous resources, such as one for improving credit quickly, on our site. As many understand, improving your credit can mean thousands of dollars of savings when you go to get a loan. This book is written by Ron Mead, who was a Mortgage Broker, so he knows what he's talking about.
We are also planning on producing an audio version of "What Every High Schooler Should Know About Credit and Finance." It might include more of the author's personal story, which I find both interesting and instructive, but that will be up to the author.
It is a pleasure being a small part of a great community through The Schoolhouse Store.
