Our Falling Love
By: Krystal D.
“Attention class!” Ms. Wilson, the band teacher yelled.
Alex just sat their holding his guitar wondering what was going on. The only time Ms. Wilson said “attention class” was when their was either good or bad news. Usually it was bad news. That worried Alex. He slouched in his chair hoping the teacher wouldn’t look at him when she made the announcement.
“Class,” she began. “today we have a new student.”
Oh great. Thought Alex. A new student. Please God don’t make me be the one to show this new kid around!
“Everybody, I’d like you to meet Marie Elizabeth Tanner. She just moved here from Iowa.”
“Please just call me Marie.” Said the new girl.
Alex couldn’t believe his eyes. Marie was beautiful! She had silky black hair, lovely blue eyes, and smooth white skin. He couldn’t believe that she was the new student! He had to meet her!
“I need somebody to show Marie the school once class is over. Is anybody willing to do that?” Ms. Wilson asked the class.
Alex raised his hand right away. This was the perfect way to get to know Marie.
“Ah, Alex. Perfect!” Ms. Wilson said looking at him. “Marie, that’s Alex Johnson and he’ll be the one to show you around school today. Why don’t you go take a seat next to him.”
Marie nodded and she took her seat.
Thirty minutes later the bell rang and class was over.
“Hi.” Alex said nervously. “I’m uh-”
“Alex.” Marie interrupted. “I know. Ms. Wilson told me. I think you know who I am.”
“Yeah! Your…Marie.” Alex’s voice got quiet when he said her name.
“Yep. So, can you help me find my locker?”
“Yeah. What’s your locker number.”
Marie unfolded a little piece of paper. “Its…locker 230.”
“Whoa!” Alex exclaimed.
“What is it?”
“Your locker is right next to mine!” Alex couldn’t believe it! Everything was working out perfectly! Alex wondered if it was fate. Was this the girl of his dreams?
“That’s great! I guess we’ll be seeing a lot of each other.” Marie said.
Alex couldn’t get the words to come out of his mouth. Everything seemed to be going so well!
“Hey uh listen.” Alex began. “If your not doing anything this afternoon would you like to…you know come over and work on homework?”
“I’d like that.” Marie said.
Hours later school ended and Marie went with Alex to his house.
“Mom! I’m home!” Alex shouted.
No answer.
“Is that a note on the table?” Asked Marie.
Alex picked up the note.
Dead Alex,
Sorry I’m not home. Emergency at work. See you at 9!
Love,
Mom
“Well, my mom’s not home.” Alex said. “Wanna go upstairs to my room?”
“Sure.” Marie replied.
Marie just stared at Alex.
I cant believe it. Marie thought to herself. He is so hott! I mean he has long brown hair, green eyes, so sexy! But it cant be like last time. I wont let it happen. We can only be friends. Besides why would someone like him go out with someone like me? Ridiculous!
Alex and Marie sat down and started working. The whole time they didn’t say a word to each other. When the clock hit 6 Marie left. But she did, of course, give Alex her e-mail address, myspace, and phone number and Alex gave her his.
Marie and Alex became great friends. They actually became best friends! They spent everyday hanging out with each other! The two were inseparable! They shared everything with each other. But what they didn’t know was that each one had a secret that the other didn’t know.
Alex came home from school. Just another day. Of course his mom wasn’t home. She was never home anymore. Ever since she and his dad had gotten divorced the house seemed so empty.
Alex went straight to his room and pulled out his knife. He cried as the knife cut open his veins. The pain he felt inside made the physical pain feel good.
Nobody loves me.
That’s what he thought as he cut himself. His dad left him and his mom for some other woman and he wont speak to either one of them. Ever since he left his mom started drinking. She came home drunk almost every night. She would say horrible things to him. She yelled at him about how he was a stupid worthless kid and how could she give birth to such a horrid child. Alex had a sister but she died. She was only fourteen and he was seven. She killed herself. He loved his sister. He knew that she loved him. Everyday she would play with him, help him with homework, put him to bed. She had always seemed so happy. He never would’ve guessed that she felt the way she did. If only she had told someone she could’ve gotten help.
Thinking about his sister made Alex more upset. He decided to go visit her grave.
When he reached the cemetery he fell to his knees before her grave and started crying. He read the tombstone: Andrea Lily Johnson December 13th 1983- May 5th 1997.
“Hey Andrea.” Alex began talking through sobs. “Its just me. I’ve been missing you. Life hasn’t been the same since you’ve left.” Alex paused. He didn’t know what to say. “Why Andy? Why? I know I ask this every time I come here but why did you do it?” He began to cry harder. “If you were pregnant why didn’t you get help? Why did you end it?” Alex took some deep breaths to calm himself down. “I’ve kept your suicide not all these years.” Suddenly anger started up in him. “Andy, I was only seven. I WAS ONLY SEVEN! How could you do that to me?! See these? See these scars? The first time this happened was when I was ten! Been doin it for six years! These scars are because of you.” He pulled the knife out of his pocket. “You wanna know something Andrea?” He started slitting his wrists. “This is because of you! I loved you!” Alex dropped the knife and started sobbing. “I’m sorry Andy. I’m so sorry.” Alex stood up. “Before I leave I should tell you something. I met this girl, Marie. She’s so wonderful. She reminds me of you. Always smiling, loving, caring. I think I love her. I’m just not sure what to do.” Alex gave a sigh and walked home without glancing back.
At home Alex sat up in his room. Marie was on his mind. She was exactly like his sister. Marie was the only one who cared about him. Alex knew what he had to do. He had to ask her out.
The next morning he got up extra early. He had to get to the school before anyone else did. Before Marie did. Once Alex was dressed and ready to go he rushed to the corner store and bought a single red rose. He tied a blue ribbon around the stem and put a little note inside. The note read:
This may sound weird but you must know its true. Marie, I love you. Will you go out with me?
When Alex got to school he put the rose in Marie’s locker. He couldn’t wait for her to find it!
An hour later Marie got to school. Marie was always early. She wanted to be prepared. At her old school she was an honor student and she hoped to be an honor student for Washington High School.
When Marie opened her locker she was surprised to see a rose fall out of it. She picked it up. Marie couldn’t believe how perfect the rose was. It looked like it had no flaws. Suddenly memories came rushing back to her.
Eric walked up to her. She couldn’t believe how great he looked. His blonde hair and blue eyes. He was perfect. He stopped in front of her and gave her a rose. “I’ll always love you.” He told her.
Marie’s eyes filled up with tears. Eric. Why did the good times leave? Why did he do that to her? She had tried so hard to block him from her memory.
Marie shook her head trying to forget about that. She then noticed their was a note tied to the rose. She took the blue ribbon and tied it around her wrist. Lovely!
When Marie opened the note she was stunned. Was he serious? Alex liked her? No. Alex loved her! Marie didn’t know what to do. She did like Alex a lot. She did have some feelings in their for him. Plus she hadn’t had a boyfriend since Eric. She needed some love in her life. Happiness filled up inside of her. She was in love again!
The happiness went down as memories from her first loved swarmed in her head. Her first love. Did she really love Eric? After what he had done? Was what they had really love? Thoughts of what he did came back to her as she started to cry.
“Hey.” Alex said shyly.
Marie turned around quickly. She had to wipe her eyes and get rid of the tears.
Alex started walking toward her. The way she turned around. Did he scare her off? Was she not ready for this? Did she have feelings for him like he had for her?
Marie turned back around. “Hey Alex.”
Alex wasn’t sure what to say. “So uh I see that you got the um…”
“I did.” Was all she said.
Alex took a deep breath. “Look, I don’t know what you think of it but the thing is I really like you. Your funny, sweet, and your beautiful! I don’t know if there are any other girls as gorgeous as you! Besides Jason you’re the only person who treats me as a person and not as a piece of dirt. You’ve inspired me so much. Marie, I love you.”
Marie couldn’t believe what she was hearing. In fact she had never heard a guy call her beautiful before. Maybe hott and sometimes sexy but never beautiful. He seemed so different. Her heart started racing. She wanted to tell him yes. She just wanted to run up to him, wrap her arms around him and tell her how much he means to her. Her heart longed to be with him. Marie knew what she had to do.
“Alex, that’s sweet but I think we should just remain friends.”
Alex was shocked. “Just friends? But Marie-”
“Look you are such a wonderful guy! I admire you. Your probably one of the sweetest guys in the world. I just don’t think we should be together. I’m sorry.”
Their was tension between them. Marie couldn’t take it. She dropped the rose and ran away.
Alex’s eyes welled up with tears. His heart was crushed. He knew he would love no one like he loved her. She was one of a kind…and she was gone.
Ring!
The bell rang and the school started filling up with kids.
How could everyone just live life? Tears started rolling down Alex’s face.
“So…” he said aloud. “it comes down to this.” He crushed the rose with his foot. “Let my heart die with this rose.”
Ring!
The bell rang again and Alex went to class.
Marie ran out of the school and to the park. She fell to her knees in a bed of flowers. Why did she do it? Why did she say no? This could’ve been her second chance at love and she blew it.
But she couldn’t get what Alex had said out of her head. You funny, sweet and your beautiful! Everything he said! Eric had never said anything like that to her. The memory came back.
“Look babe I’m sorry! Just forgive me already!”
She stopped walking and turned to face him. “Forgive you! Its gonna take me a while to get over what you did last night!”
Eric just smiled. “C’mon Marie. Its not like you haven’t gotten drunk before.”
“But when I was drunk I didn’t go and make-out with someone else!”
They continued to yell at each other. They couldn’t even hear what each other or themselves were saying.
“You know fine!” Eric shouted.
He grabbed her wrists tight and shoved her in the car.
“Eric stop! Let me go!” Marie was desperate. “Eric! Eric!”
Marie gasped. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t think about that. About what else happened. The reason she moved here. To escape her past. To runaway from everything that happened. To start over. Was it possible? She could barely sleep at night thinking about what had happened. But she wouldn’t give up. Life’s to short to end it all. No matter what happens you should live life to its fullest and see how it turns out. That’s what Marie always told herself. It was so hard. Trying to live life as if certain things hadn’t happened.
Marie stood up. She couldn’t let this go to her head. No matter what happened she had to keep her chin up. Above all she had try and remain friends with Alex. He was the only friend she had. She was going back to school.
When school ended Alex went to the corner store and bought a single black rose. With that rose he tied a red ribbon around the stem, and stuck a note in it.
Ding dong
“Dude! Whatsup? Haven’t seen ya in a while!” Jason said ecstatic.
“Hey man.” Alex said quietly.
“Dude is something wrong? And what sup with that rose man?”
“I cant take it anymore.”
“Why? Girl turn you down?”
Alex sighed. “Not just any girl. Marie.”
“Marie? That new chick? You been hangin out with her?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s why I haven’t been seein a lot of ya lately!”
Alex took a deep breath. “I’m ending it, Jason.”
“Ending what?”
“Ending it all.”
“What?! Your gonna kill yourself just cause some girl turned you down! Dude your better then that!”
“Jason, you don’t understand. Marie, isn’t like other girls. She’s different. She…”
Jason shook his head. “Marie reminds you of your sister doesn’t she?” Sweet, sweet, Andy. May she rest in piece. Remember when she used to take us down to the lake and-”
Alex snapped. “This is no time for meaningless memories!”
Jason just stared at him.
“Jason, I’m sorry. Its just that…I dunno.”
“Look, Alex, remember when your sister did what she did and everyone was so upset and how much it hurt everybody she knew? If you do what she did it’ll be the same. You don’t wanna do that. Don’t make the people you love hurt like that again.”
Alex thought about that for a moment. “If I ended it no one except you would care. My parents hate me and so does Marie. Besides, I wont be like my sister. She took a bullet to the head. I’m gonna jump.”
“Where do you plan on jumping?” Jason asked.
“Crystal Light Bridge.”
“Isn’t that the last place you saw Andy before she…”
“Yeah.”
“Dude I’m not gonna stop you from doing what you think is right.”
Alex managed a slight smile. “Thanks man. Give this to Marie for me.”
Jason took the rose from him. Tears came running down his face. “I’m gonna miss you man.” He said as he embraced his friend.
Without another word Alex left for home. He still had to leave a note for his mom. As if she cared. Once he was home he grabbed a pen and paper.
Life’s a short thing and it shouldn’t be wasted. But without love there is no life. Love is like oxygen. Without oxygen you cant live. My life isn’t worth nothing because it doesn’t have its oxygen. I love you very much and I hope you understand.
Alexander David Johnson June 17th 1990-October 11th 2006.
He left the note on the kitchen counter and walked out the door and was on his way to Crystal Light Bridge where fate would end that day.
Jason ran as fast as he could. Jason had always been overweight so he wasn’t a fast runner. But he knew he had to give the rose to Marie. He had to do it for his best friend.
When he finally reached Marie’s house her mother told him the she wasn’t home yet. Jason couldn’t believe it. Not home? Just great!
Jason started walking away. Where could she be.
“Jason?”
He turned around. It was Marie!
“Marie! Marie, I have something important to give you!” He ran up to her and handed it to her.
“A black rose?” Marie said quizzically.
Jason stood their trying to catch his breath. “Its from Alex.”
Marie took the red ribbon and tied it on her left wrist. She read the note that said:
Marie,
I cant take it anymore. Its got to stop. You may find this very emo and you may think its ridiculous but I don’t care because you need to know. I love you! I’ve never loved anyone like you before! Just seeing you smile brightened my day. The way you would always help me out with school and tell me about those fairy-tales that you made up. You’re very creative. I admire you for it. I used to wonder why you would make do stupid stuff with you. Like that time you wore a princess hat to school and I wore a court jester hat just to see how people would stare at us. How did you think of that? It was little embarrassing but I had fun doing it with you! I’m ending it tonight. I realized that I really liked you because you remind me of my sister, Andrea. She killed herself when I was seven and god I miss her! But I know that she loved me and I was thought that I wanted to be with someone like her and your that person! But when you told me no…you ripped my heart out. I cant take anymore. Cant take it from you or from my parents. Its over. Come look for my cold dead corpse in the Crystal Light River. My heart rests with you.
Alex
“What have I done?” Marie said to herself.
“Alex is cool with it.”
“Cool with it?! He’s going to jump!”
“If you really care I can show you where the CLB is.”
“Take me their right away!”
Marie and Jason raced to stop Alex from jumping before it was to late.
An hour later Alex got their. He was standing on the edge of the bridge. This was it. It was over. Alex took and deep breath and…
“Alex! Stop!”
He didn’t turn around. He knew that voice. The voice that tore his heart and watched it bleed on the floor.
“Alex! Please don’t jump!” Marie shouted from behind.
“I cant face you Marie! I have to do this!” He took another deep breath.
“Wait! Alex listen to me! I know I told you that I just wanted to remain friends but it wasn’t true!”
“Don’t try and stop me with your lies!”
“Its true! Look, I was just scared! I didn’t want it to be like last time!”
Alex just stood their with his eyes still shut. “What do you mean last time?”
“Back in Iowa,” Marie began. “I had a boyfriends named Eric and-”
“So you still like this Eric guy?!”
“No! Not at all! One night he got drunk at a party and I caught him making-out with another girl. I was really upset and the next day we got into a fight and…” Marie choked on a sob. “he shoved me in his car and took me to some abandoned apartment and he…he…did some horrible physical things to me. He told me that if I told anyone he would kill me and my family. I was just scared that it would turn out like last time. The truth is…I love you Alex! I love you with all my heart!”
Alex was stunned. “Why didn’t u tell me about this?”
“Alex,” Marie started shaking. “I was afraid. I’ve been trying to runaway from it not stare it in the face!”
Alex started to turn around when his foot slipped.
“Alex!” Marie ran over and grabbed his hand.
Fear shot threw Alex when he looked down and realized how high in the air he was dangling.
“Where’s Jason?” asked Marie. “Jason!” She turned around to look but Jason wasn’t their. “Alex, I cant hold on much longer.”
“Let go.” Alex said in a soft whisper.
“Let go?! Alex, are you crazy?!”
“I love you.” Alex let go of her wrist.
Marie tried to hold on but her hand was getting sweaty.
“I love you.” Alex said again as his wrist slipped through her hand.
“NO!” Marie screamed as she watched Alex fall. She broke into tears. Alex, was gone. This was what she was trying to prevent!
Marie sat their for over an hour. She just couldn’t believe it. He was gone. The one person who really, truly, loved her was gone. Not only was he gone, but it was all her fault. If she had just held on tighter maybe, just possibly Alex might still be here right.
Marie thought back. She once heard someone say that “Love is suicide.” Was it true? All love ever does is cause you pain. Like now. Like Eric. Marie was always opposed to suicide. But how could she live knowing she not only have go through life with memories from Eric, but living with the face the person who she really loved died just because she wasn’t able to hold on any longer. How can you live knowing that?
Marie looked beside her and saw a razor blade. She picked it up and saw Alex’s name engraved into it. She thought back and remembered that Alex had scars on his wrists. What from?
Marie held the knife close to her heart hugging it every second. This was all that was left.
Love is suicide
That’s all Marie could think. That phrase was stuck in her head. She looked down at the razor blade. Why should she live life without Alex? Why cant she end it and have their souls be together eternally? Wouldn’t that be better then living without him?
Marie pondered that thought. After she thought about she realized that she didn’t know where she would go after she died. She believed that Jesus was Lord and Savior but she had always heard that people who commit suicide go to hell.
Marie took a deep breath. “Wherever I go. Heaven or hell. Let me be with the one I love.”
With that Marie plunged the dagger into her heart. Her body fell over the edge of the bridge. Strangely enough her body landed right on top of Alex’s…holding each others hand at the bottom of the glossy river forever and ever.
The End
