1849'ers
Once upon a time two men, Henry Hopkins and Charles McMicheal, from Kentucky, rushed to CA to get gold. Listen to this story.
Henry took his horse, Trever, along. He took a rope and tied it loosely around the horse's neck. He hung a basket from the rope.
After crossing rivers, climbing over the Rockie Mountians, and battling mosquitos, they finelly reached CA. Now they had the problem of getting back.
They found two lost sheep on the way, and took them with them. When they crossed the Mississippi River they were nearly robbed by outlaws. After a stiff fight the outlaws were captured and tied up. The outlaws were freed when they paid a $2 fee.
When Henry and Charles reached a Tenessee trading post whatever food and clothing that had not been lost was wet or dirty, they were starved, and the pistal and axe they had brought along were gone. So they were happy to see the trading post.
They got $800 for the gold, $6 when they swapped money with a man named Joe Thompson, and only $.50 for the sheep. Later they went on 2 more trips and got 100 pounds of gold.
That was some trip!
