• Making sense of standardized testing... - Mar. 14, 2006

I read a great article at CNN.com that I think every parent should read. It helps parents and  anyone else figure out what standardize testing helps do and what it can't do.  I really like the side bar they have so I thought I'd repost the items here:

Questions to ask before testing

  • Which tests are given in my child's grade?

  • What are the purposes of these tests? What will these tests measure? How will the scores be reported?

  • How will the results of the tests used?
  • What do you do to prepare children for tests? What can I do at home to help my child prepare to take the test?

  • What happens if my child performs poorly?

    Questions to ask after testing

  • What do the test results tell me about my child's strengths and weaknesses?

  • What can I do to help strengthen my child's skills and abilities?
  • Are the test results consistent with my child's performance in the classroom?
  • How does my child compare with his peers?
  • Is the test data used to help improve instruction? What, if any, changes will be made in the classroom instruction?

    About Me []

Blogging is my only addiction. Well, blogging and new books. I was homeschooled from K-12. I have an overactive imagination, read a page a minute and type 75 wmp. I've worked with kids since I was 13 and love writing about education issues. I'm an unpaid intern with MINDspriting. I steal paperclips to make up for the lack of a check.
