JESUS in SUPERMAN Returns

This Article was published in SUPERMAN and SMALLVILLE Articles

I posted my Christmas Blessings on Wednesday. One of them was SUPERMAN Returns Special Edition DVD.
We watched it last Sunday. As I sat there I thought about how much this movie was like the story of JESUS Christ. It made think of how much JESUS cares, loves, and gave for me.
Afterward I was still thinking about it and it just moved me so much to think that JESUS gave so much for me.

Here are some great similarities between JESUS and SUPERMAN I found in “SUPERMAN Returns”:
Kal-El was sent to earth to be its savior, as Jor-El said in his message. Kal-El was raised by a humble hard working couple, as was JESUS by Joseph and Mary. He picked a job that was useful in helping him fulfill his destiny.
In the movie, SUPERMAN has been gone for 5 years searching for his home planet. JESUS did not do that.
When “SUPERMAN Returns”, the world is in chaos. The crime rate has gone up, people don’t care whether they do what is right or not. He finds out his adversary, Lex Luthor, has gotten out of prison and is know trying to kill millions, no billions (the press has yet again underestimated Lex Luthor), of people.
He goes out to stop him and is almost beaten to death. He is stabbed in his side. When he is thrown off the landmass, he remembers all his father had taught him. His words.
Lex thinks he has finally beaten SUPERMAN, but that is what happens when pride gets in the way. But SUPERMAN is rescued and returns yet again to complete his task.
When SUPERMAN is lifting the Kryptonite infested landmass out of the water, it reminds me of when JESUS is on the cross and has all of MY sin on his back. It is dangerous to him, it is hurting him, but he keeps taking it. Up and up til it is gone into space.
Then he falls to earth. He is pretty much dead. He is in a coma. The doctors can’t do anything to help him. So in saving billions of people, his life is taken.
But then like the Triumphant Resurrection of JESUS, SUPERMAN comes back and is healed.

There is a part when he is talking to Lois Lane about her article “Why the World Doesn’t Need SUPERMAN.” He says, “You wrote why the world doesn’t need a savior, but everyday I hear them crying for one.”
How moving is that?? Can you hear JESUS saying that to us?? We, who get so caught up in our own little world and lives, thinking that we have everything we want and how we are just fine with not having anybody tell us what is wrong or sinful in our lives, saying, “Everyday I see that you do need a savior to come in and help you.” It was just profound to me. I can just hear JESUS saying that to ME!!
It is so Awesome to me that these characteristics can be found. Obviously the men that made this had JESUS in mind when they thought up. The time period that they created SUPERMAN was a time that the world needed a Savior.
I think that if you are a Believer and you can take the meanings out of this movie that I have, you will find that they people who made SUPERMAN Returns picked the right time to have it come out. I know that many people have tried to make a SUPERMAN movie since SUPERMAN IV and no one could do it so that it would be as great as they wanted it.
You cannot find very many movies, books, etc that have so many similarities in them that would be as powerful as these are to me.
I hope that when you watch this movie you can find these things that I have and be moved to be thankful for all that JESUS has done for you!! It sure has made me soo thankful for having JESUS as my Savior!!
Just watching it reminds me of my JESUS!! How he died for me.
He is my SAVIOR!!

God Bless and Keep You and Yours!!
Take Care!!
Luv

The Lord speaks to us through many different means, and that includes movies, in my experience. I know in the past He has shown me things through other worldly movies like "Dead Poet's Society" and "Philadelphia". Other people may see these movies, and the Holy Spirit now show them the same things, but if our eyes and spirits are in tune with God He can use anything! God is so cool!

On the other hand, we must be sure and keep our eyes on the true risen Lord. I'm just thinking that we may see a lot of similarities to Jesus in the antiChrist, and we mustn't be fooled. (I'm not directing that comment at your post, understand. It is just a thought I'm thinking).

Have a Happy New Year!

Great post Amanda!!!!

I especially liked that line where he says, "You wrote why the world doesn’t need a savior, but everyday I hear them crying for one" -- that was the one line that stuck out for me in the movie.

I enjoyed watching Superman Returns, although the part with Lois Lane and her live-in-boyfriend was rather disturbing. Other than that -- great movie!! :)

Happy 2007!

Love your sister in Christ,
Sylvia

I totally agree. While I was watching Superman Returns I was thinking about how much it was like the story of Jesus. It really got me when he said something like "You say the world doesnt need a Saviour, but I hear them crying for one every day"...(I cant remember how it goes) but that really got me.

Hope you're doing great!

:)
In Jesus,
Becca
