"One Night With The King" by 20th Century FoxFaith Films. Siol Enal gives 2 Thumbs Down.

This Article was published in MOVIES and TV Shows- Reviews

You may have heard about it on tv, stores, even Christian Bookstores, but do not judge a book by its cover.
When we saw the previews for it, we thought it might be somewhat right, but, boy, were we wrong. I think that the parts they showed in the commercials were the only Biblically correct parts. They got the names and parts of the premise of the story correct. I think they did that on purpose. So if you were a Christian, you would think it was a good Bible story that follows the actual story.
By the 15min. mark I was really mad and ready to just quit watching it. It was that bad.
First, they start with a story that I don’t know if it is even Biblically accurate. I know a part of it is. Something about Agag, the king, that Saul didn't kill. In the story, Saul saved him and his pregnant wife. His wife escaped and had the baby boy, and she taught him revenge upon his father. So they became the Agagites, and are ever after the Jews for what they did. They have Haman as an Agagite, and that is why he wants to kill all the Jews.
They make Hadassah very whiny, manipulative, unsubmissive and very immodest.  I don’t mean her clothes, I mean her attitude and the way she acts and what she does. She is always dancing around and being giddy. She is pretty much a flirt.
They added a guy in there who was their housekeepers son, who liked Hadassah and wanted to marry her, there was one unrealistic part where they almost kiss?? I don’t ever remember that in the Bible.
Then there was this whole thing about a necklace that had the Star of David in it when it was in front of  a light and how her parents where killed when she was about 13. The way I remember the story was she was brought to Mordecai as an infant and he was raised to be a submissive, modest woman.
When she is taken to the palace she reads to the king one nite and falls in love with him and all this other junk. They didn’t get the part of Haman right either.
Just about everything in this movie is not Biblically sound. And we found out in the credits that it was based on a novel written by a Christian author. Can you believe that?? A Christian who is supposed to have read the Word changed it so much that it was a horrible movie that didn’t even line up with the Bible. Why do people think they can change the Infallible Word of the Almighty. It is a mockery to God when people, especially Christian, do that to God’s Word.
Now I know you may think that this was made by an unbeliever, but you can’t honestly say that as it was based on the Christian novel, "Hadassah: One Night with the King" by Tommy Tenney. Now I had seen this book when it came out and thought about reading it, but never did. Now I am thankful that I didn't. I just can't believe that someone who has read the Word would go and change it to make it more whatever.
It was a total love story. It wasn't even really about Esther and how she saved her people. One of the issues I had was the king and Esther had a fight about something and that was what they tied Esther saving her people into.
I don't remember all the other unBiblical parts that were in due to the fact that I didn't finish watching, but, boy, was I happy when it was over. All I could think was how much a waste of time it was to sit and watch that stupid movie!!
This is one movie I would NOT recommend for viewing. You don't want your children to think that is the story of Esther. Even VeggiesTales did a better job following the Bible that FoxFaith films. Or even Tommy Tenney.
So there you have it, 2 Thumbs Down for "One Night With The King" by 20th Century FoxFaith Films

I am going to get into my Bible this week and review this story. We did watch the movie and with a great review from friends I thought it would have been more biblically accurate. I am so glad you have pointed out some of the areas in the film that were confusing to me. Thank you for your review.

I watched the movie a few weeks ago, and I don't remember some of the particulars, nor did I form an opinion about it, but I want to thank you for what you pointed out that was not Biblically accurate. I think I had a migrain that night, so I wasn't really paying attention to the movie, but now that I've read your post, I definitely agree. Some parts were very confusing to me, and the way that they portrayed Esther was very "flirty" like you said.

:) I meant on your whole blog, not necessarily this post. On the whole, I believe your blog really glorifies God. We need more people who will communicate for Christ in a positive way!
Have a great day!
