"Procrastination is the thief of time, collar him." David Copperfield
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." A Tale of Two Cities
"In a word, I was too cowardly to do what I knew to be right, as I had been too cowardly to avoid doing what I knew to be wrong." Great Expectations If you love literature, you will know who those titles belong to: Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens is one of my absolute favorite authors! His works deal with real life and give encouragement to the reader! I remember the first work of Dickens I read: Great Expectations. While I was still young and may not have understood everything about the story, I loved reading the story of Pip and how he helped a man, who helped him when he grew up! Reminds of me of this scripture: Hebrews 13:2
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. I know Pip didn't think that helping the convict would help him in any way, but it did. :)
After I read Great Expectations, I tried to read A Tale of Two Cities, but it was very confusing to my 14 year old brain, so I didn't read it.
Fast forward to when I was 17, and you will find David Copperfield in my hands! I love David Copperfield! That 735 page book was a wonderful read to open my eyes to many things! I am so glad I read it! David Copperfield and Great Expectations are only two of Dickens' many wonderful works! He has many written works that are favorites of people everywhere! His works include: Fiction
A Christmas Carol
A Tale Of Two Cities
Barnaby Rudge
Bleak House
David Copperfield
Dombey And Son
Great Expectations
Hard Times
Lazy Tour Of Two Idle Apprentices
Little Dorrit

What Christmas Is As We Grow Older
Wreck Of The Golden Mary February 7th celebrates the 197th birthday of Charles Dickens. Dickens, whose pen name was Boz, is said to be the most popular English novelist of the Victorian Era. Dickens was the second oldest of eight children and moved quite a bit when he was younger. He had a particular fondness for Tobias Smollett and Henry Fielding novels. When he was 12 his father was arrested and put in jail, so Dickens wasn't able to continue attending William Giles' school.
He worked at Warren's Blacking Warehouse 10 hours a day pasting labels on jars of shoe polish and by doing so earned six shillings a week.
After a few months, Dickens father was released from prison and moved his family. Dickens was able to attend the Wellington House Academy in London, but his mother still made him continue to work at the Blacking House. He was very resentful of his situations and conditions of his life.
When he was 15, he began working in the law office of Ellis and Blackmore, as a clerk. Even though it was a junior position, he was an articled clerk and would eventually qualify for admission to the Bar. It was during this time that he learned his detailed knowledge of legal processes. This knowledge helped him write works such as Nicholas Nickleby, Dombey and Son, and particularly Bleak House.
When he was 17, he became a court stenographer and in 1830, he met his first love, Maria Beadnell. It is thought that she was the model for his character Dora in David Copperfield. David Copperfield is said to be Dickens autobiography. Maria's parents didn't approve of the courtship and ended the relationship by sending her to school in Paris.
By 1834, Dickens was a political journalist who reported on parliamentary debate and was traveling across Britain to cover election campaigns for The Morning Chronicle. His journalism, which were sketches appeared in periodicals from 1833, formed his collection: Sketches by Boz which he published in 1836 and it led to the publication of his first novel, The Pickwick Papers.
April 2nd, 1836, Dickens married Catherine Hogarth, who was the daughter of the Evening Chronicle Editor. They set up their home in Bloomsbury and had ten children. Catherine's sister, Mary, lived with the Dickens for a while to help them. Dickens became attached to Mary who died in his arms after being ill in 1837. She was characterized in his books also and was the basis for Little Nell.
Dickens became the editor for Bentley's Miscellany until three years later he fell out with the own, but at the same time his success as an author continued. He wrote and published Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shope and Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty as part of the Master Humphrey's Clock series.
Dickens also made two trips to North America with Catherine and met with President John Tyler, went to New York City to geve lectures and raise support for copyright laws and abolition of slavery. This trip was put into his Martin Chuzzlewit work.
Dickens lived abroad in many places and during that time wrote his works. Dickens took people from his life and characterized them in all his novels.
In June 1865, Dickens was involved in the Staplehurst Rail crash and he spent some time tending the wounded and dying before the rescue workers arrived. Though he was unharmed in the crash, he never recovered from it and his writing diminished. He instead took up reading his favorite novels, attending plays and traveling.
He had a mild stroke in 1869 and began on The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He had another stroke later in the year after working on Edwin Drood all day and on five years to the day of the Staplehurst crash, Charles Dickens died in his home and was mourned by all his readers!
Against his wish to be buried in Rochester Catherdal, he was buried in the Poets' Corner of Westminister Abbey. His tomb inscription says: "He was a sympthiser to the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world." While Dicken's will made sure that no memorial be erected for him, there is a life size bronze statue of him in Clark Park in the Spruce Hills of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dickens made a huge impact on society and is loved by many! I know I have really enjoyed reading his works!
I have read Great Expectations and David Copperfield all the way through, I have tried to read Bleak House, A Tale Of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, and A Christmas Tale. I am currently reading Martin Chuzzlewit and I have Bleak House, A Tale Of Two Cities, Our Mutual Friend and Nicholas Nickleby on my book list to read this year! Have you read any of Dickens works? What was your favorite? He was truly England's Best Writer!

The Homeschooler's Book of Lists Resource Book Review
Published on November 26, 2007 at 7:35 PM
This Article was published in Book Reports-Reviews Articles
Don't you just love it when you find a treasure chest of knowledge?? I know I do. I recently found a wonderful resource book that has just about everything in it.
It is "The Homeschooler's Book of Lists” by Sonya Haskins. It has more than 250 lists, charts, and facts to make planning easier and faster listed in the book itself, but this book also comes with a cd that has reproducible masters of more than 250 lists and charts available for you to use and print off.
Mom got this book a couple weeks ago and when she first got it, I took a little peak. I was so overwhelmed with all the info that was in it; I had to put it down and I decided I would look at it later so I could devour it when I had time. Boy, I am so glad I did. I finally had the chance to take another look at it yesterday and I am just thrilled that we now own this book.
This book has so much information in it on a wide range of topics, I don't know if I will ever be able to get through the whole thing.
It has so many different subjects that is tells so much about. The style it is in is very neat and easy to read. Very crisp and clean. The way she lists the information is very neat. It is like a chart. I think the way Mrs. Haskins lists the information is very fun to read. Everyone of any age will more than likely find this book interesting and won’t want to put it down.
The chapters are:
History & Government
Language Arts
Mathematics
Religion
Science
Animals
The Human Body
Geography
Foreign Language
Great People
Quotations, Speeches and Other Documents
Computers
Art and Music
Curriculum and Homeschool Methodologies
Organizational and Reference Lists for Teachers, Parents, and Students
I really like all of them. I can't really say which is my favorite category. They are so full of so much. Each category goes in depth with each topic is it talking about. I mean, it’s not you piddly little 50-page resource. It is 556 pages of great info that will help you in your homeschool.
My type of learning is I like to learn it myself by myself, so just sitting and reading this and taking notes is great for me. I really enjoyed just sitting and going through it.
From reading it I think it would be a neat idea to read it to your students and then quiz them from it. It is that good!!
In just the History and Government chapter alone, some of the things it lists is:
Important Dates in History, which lists dates starting in 3000 bc and goes through to 1901.
Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Modern Wonders and Natural Wonders.
Pharaohs, Rulers of England and France and Germany.
It also talks alot about American government too. Things like: Government Branches, Important Dates in the American Revolution, Battles of the American Revolution, Steps to Creating Bills and Laws, and much more. It also lists the Founding Fathers and what state they were from. It also has Presidential Election Results.
The chapters of each subject are very much like this. They have a ton of different things that make learning fun and easy. They really go in-depth, but not too much that it overwhelms you. This resource/study book that will enhance your homeschool because it goes through a handful of different subjects and expounds on them. I learned alot already from it. For instance, I am as old as the world wide web. haha I thought that was neat. I also learned that Mom is as old as the cell phone.
I would like to own this book just for my own enjoyment. It is really neat to be able to learn all this stuff. I really like it that it goes into depth about alot of the things. I love reading informational type stuff and this is just my kind of book.
There is so much I can tell you about this book, but it would take forever. So you just need to get it.
Some other great resource books are:
Educating The Wholehearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson
What Your Child Needs To Know When: According to the Bible and to the State by Robin Sampson
Anyway, this is a really awesome and neat book that will really be a great book to have for your homeschool. Don’t be surprised if your children just pick it up and start reading it.
If you would like to know more about Mrs. Haskins and her book, please visit her website. She also has a blog here on hsb called The Homemaker's Cottage. Please click on the the title of the book above for a more descriptive review of the book on Mrs. Haskins website.
I really loved this book. I would highly recommend this book for everyone. You will really enjoy it and enhance your knowledge.
As Always,

David Copperfield Article
Published on February 21, 2007 at 12:06 AM
This Article was published in Book Reports-Reviews Articles
I finished David Copperfield a couple weeks ago. It was so great. I laughed, I cried, it moved me, Bob. Ok wiat that was weird. Having a Veggie Tales moment there for I don't know what reason!!
It was a perfect novel. It had romance, action, sorrow, heroes, villains and just everyday life stuff. It will now be on my favs list.
It starts off a little boring, but gets better in the middle. They are other parts that might not keep your attention, but don’t give up, it always gets better!!
Sylvia and Mandy have also just finished reading it too. They also really liked it!!
I tried to get you a report done up on this book, but what I typed up was things and surprises that I couldn’t not tell you about in order you give you a book report. So all I can tell you is that it is an awesome book that you should definitely read.
I loved it. It will be put on my list for the books I will require my “students” to read!!
When I came to tell Mom I was done, I was in tears and she was like “I know, it was so good” She read it in school and loved it too. Like Mother like Daughter!!
All in all, I would encourage you to read it.
And speaking of reading books....have you checked out the new HSB Literary Club?? They are starting with the Lamplighter book, Ishmael. Hmm....sounds interesting!! We are going to try and get it and join the Club.

The Robe-An Article by Siol Enal
Published on December 30, 2006 at 1:53 PM
This Article was published in Book Reports-Reviews Articles
I have recently read The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas. WOW!! What a wonderful book. It is truly a great story about getting to know what salvation is.
It also gives history about the time period that Jesus was alive. About the Roman Government and just different stuff. Cultures, customs, etc.
I would recommend it to everyone!!
Here is my report on it:
The story starts out in Rome with a man named Marcellus Gallio. He is the son of a Senator, therefore he is a Tribune.
Marcellus has just returned home from a banquet for the spoiled Prince Gaius. Gaius is Julia’s son, but not Tiberius’(the Emperor). Marcellus, while drunk at the banquet, insulted Gaius.
You get to know more about their family for awhile. Marcellus has a sister named Lucia, and she has a friend that is the granddaughter of Tiberius’ old girlfriend that is Tiberius’ favorite named Diana. Marcellus and Diana are in love with each other and promise one another.
Then Marcellus gets a letter from Gaius saying that he is to go to the post at Minoa. That is where they send men that they want to get rid of. So Marcellus and Demetrius, his personal slave, but more like friend, go to Minoa. When Diana hears this she decides to go to Tiberius and ask for Marcellus to get sent back home.
When Marcellus and Demetrius get to Minoa, Marcellus has to show the men there that he is in charge and earn their respect.
After he is there for awhile, they go to Jerusalem to help maintain order over the Jewish holiday, Passover. During their time there, there is a man that the Jewish leaders want dead, so Pilate sentences him to death, and appoints the company from Minoa to carry out the order.
Paulus, the second commander of Minoa, tells Marcellus of these orders and what they entitled, he tells Marcellus that he will want to be very drunk in order to perform this command.
They take this man, Jesus, to Golgotha to be crucified.
While he is dying on the cross, the soldiers gamble for his Robe. Marcellus wins it.
During this time, Demetrius was looking for Jesus trying to warn him of what they were going to do to him, but he was too late. So when he gets to the cross and sees him, he is sorrowful. When he sees Marcellus, he goes to him, and Marcellus gives him the Robe to take home.
After the crucifixion, the soldiers are invited to Pilate’s for a banquet.
While there the soldiers want to see the Robe and make Marcellus put it on. When he does he becomes mad. It makes him crazy. He tells Demetrius to destroy the Robe, but he keeps it as it gives him a sense of peace and love for all.
While they are still in Jerusalem, Marcellus is summoned home. They set back to Rome, but when they get there, Marcellus is still crazy, and his family is worried.
Senator Gallio calls Demetrius to his office to find out what happened. Demetrius tells him and they decided to send him to Athens. So that people don’t talk about him.
Demetrius takes Marcellus there and they are there for over half a year. Some adventures happen. They meet a Jewish cloth maker and Demetrius learns about Jesus.
One afternoon, Demetrius goes out for awhile and Marcellus finds the Robe while looking for his knife that Demetrius took for safe keeping. When he sees he is so scared. Then he touches it and is relieved of his present state of mind. He is calmed and healed. When Demetrius gets back and sees what happened, he is relieved. They get a summons from Tiberius to go back to Rome. It is delivered by Quintus, Gaius’ personal foot soldier who is only concerned with moving up in Gaius’ eyes.
Quintus insults the family that Marcellus is staying with and Demetrius beats him up because of it. Therefore Demetrius must leave. He decides he will go back to Jerusalem and learn more about Jesus and why he was so important.
Marcellus goes back to Rome and goes to Tiberius. When hearing the story of Marcellus’, he is interested and wants to know more. So he sends Marcellus back to Israel to learn about him.
Diana had interceded for Marcellus and told Tiberius that was who she wanted to marry.
So Marcellus goes and acts like a cloth merchant, but really searching for information on Jesus. He has many adventures. He meets back up with Demetrius, he witness Stephen being killed.
Then he goes home again when he has learned all he could. After he gets back and reports to Tiberius some of his learnings, he goes home to his family and Tiberius summons him again, then Tiberius dies. And Gaius is Emperor. He wants Diana. He also takes Demetrius, who had come back with Marcellus, and keeps him as his own.
Marcellus is sent home and on the way there, he jumps ship and comes to this little town of fruit pickers. He shares the gospel and the town is saved, he lives with the man in charge and takes care of his dealings. He lives there for awhile.
All the while, Diana is in danger. So Demetrius and Diana make a plan to escape. They jump the ledge and get to a boat and go away.
While they are in the boat and are searching for Marcellus, Gaius is killed.
They get to the town, where Marcellus is and Marcellus and Diana are married there.
They return to Rome, and now Caligula is Emperor. He is a mad, crazy man. He wants all the Christians dead.
Demetrius gets hurt and almost dies, but Peter the Apostle comes and heals him. Marcellus gets Demetrius away, and when Caligula hears that Marcellus is back, he brings him into custody and charges him with being a Christian.
When Marcellus is asked if he will renounce Jesus, and Marcellus says no, he condemns him to be killed.
Diana, who has been sitting at the table next to Caligula, hears this she stands up and says she wants to go with her husband, but Caligula didn’t charge her with anything, therefore he says no. So she gives him something to be charged with. She insults him and says that he should not be Emperor. So he sentences her.
That is the end.
I don’t know if they actually are killed or are saved, because I haven’t read the next book. But it was such a wonderful, exciting, awesome book. Please read it.
Well since I read the book and knew that there was a movie that was based on it, I had to see it and see if it would live up to the book. And just like every other movie that is based on a book, boy was I disappointed!! Pretty much the only thing they got right were the characters, and some of them weren’t even right!!
I sat there being disappointed, mad and upset that they didn’t do it right.
I couldn’t believe that Mr. Douglas would let them do that to his story. Just tear apart EVERYTHING and pretty much write their own version of what should happen.
I learned a lesson from this though. Watch the movie first, then read the book. The disappointment isn’t so great when it is done this way.
The movie was a good movie, but since I already knew how the story was supposed to be and it wasn’t that way, I didn’t like it.
There is a second book to “The Robe” entitled “The Big Fisherman”. I have not read it yet. There is also a second movie to “The Robe”, but it follows the movie, not the book.
Mr. Douglas did not give any studio rights to “The Big Fisherman” Therefore they couldn’t make a movie based on it. I think that he did that was because of what they did to the first movie.
The only movie I have seen that they followed the book exactly was “The Lion the Witch, and the Wardrobe” by Disney. That was almost word for word from the book.
I also found out that Mr. Douglas was born and grew up in the city that we live in!! How cool is that?? I was pretty excited when I found it out. He was a pastor and wrote another book about John the Baptist called "More than a Prophet".
Well I hope that is has excited you about reading “The Robe”. Just watch the movie first, or don’t watch it at all. You will be very disappointed if you do.

Chronicles of Narnia Book & Movie Report
Published on June 10, 2006 at 9:48 PM

I have been reading "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis. It is almost exactly that way that Disney made the new movie. It is very rare that you find a movie that is taken from a book that is almost exactly like that book.
The only part that I have found that they left out was when the Witch is going to the stone table and they meet the family of squirrels and the other creature that I can’t think of now. And then the only part that they redid was in the beginning when they break the window. There were some other things I think in the beginning that they changed too.
But it is very rare to find a movie with little or no changes like it is in this one. I applaud Disney for doing such a good job on the movie.
Now I have to recant and tell everyone that I do like the book and movie now. I think that the reason I didn’t like it before is because of the BBC adaptation of it is really dumb. I would not like it if it weren’t for the new movie. So I do like "The Chronicles of Narnia". I still don’t like the creatures that are in it, though.
A really great way to watch the movie is with the "Narnia Fun Facts" on. You can find that in the special features, I think. There are some interesting facts about C.S. Lewis and also J.R.R. Tolkien.
One of the interesting facts on the popups were that "Aslan" is Turkish for "Lion".
Pretty neat, huh?
Anyway I apologize all you "Chronicle" fans out there! I am now one of them! And I would encourage you to read and watch it.
I still think that "The Lord of the Rings" is the BESTEST!

I totally agree with the amazing job in the movie being sooooo close to the book. I have to admit I was quite surprised Disney was so close, they normally change things alot. One scene that most people wouldn't remember but I sure so is when Edmund in the battle at the end against the Witch and he was riding he said something to his horse and the horse replied to him that his name was Philip. I was so amazed. I was thinking they really did their research because the name Philip means lover of horses. I knew that because my oldest is named Philip. But in the credits it showed the guys name who did the voice of Philip the horse is name is Philip. So now I don't think they were probably that smart. LOL
I thought it was so cool that C.S Lewis was so smart that he even used the Turkish name for lion for Aslan, I didn't know that. I had to tell my boys right away. (0:
I don't normally let my kids read alot of fantasy but LOTR and the Narnia books are some of the few I do. My kids can't get enough of them.
Thanks for being such a neat friend. (0:

Yeah, I totally agree, they did a great job with the new movie. I was really worried when I found out that they were making it, I LOVE the books and was afraid that they'd mess it up, (not that it could be worse than the BBC version... *cough*) but a lot of my friends went to see it and said it was great so I did too and agreed! Anyway, I'm glad you like Narnia now!!

You will find as you read through the books that CS. Lewis had alot of hidden meanings. e.g. The Silver Chair is about Spiritual Warfare. The Last Battle is about Revelation and future events. It is very fun to discover the meanings.

Welcome, Fellow Narnian!!!
Yeah I love the books. The movie was excellent in terms of mostly sticking with the book. The beginning was slightly changed, but I thought the Blitz was an excellent way to open the movie. It showed why the children were staying at the Professor's instead of merely starting off without any explanation.
The actors were great, don't you think they portrayed the parts excellently??
And wasn't the score amazing?!?!? (I LOVE "The Battle"!!)
Someone mentioned the hidden things in the books. yes, I love reading the books and thinking "Ah that's like when God created earth..." and all that jazz. I would read them all over again, but they're somewhere in a box in my garage.....lol!

At The Foot of the Rainbow by Gene Stratton-Porter is about two friends and the importance of honesty and thinking about others before yourself.
This story is about Dannie Macnoun, an Irishman and Jimmie Malone his best friend. They are "The Ratcatchers of the Wabash River".
Jimmie is very self-concerned and wants to take everything away that Dannie wants, because Dannie is always satisfied and Jimmie wants to be. Dannie always worried about Jimmie, because he is not a Christian, and his needs. Dannie makes sure he picks up the slack for Jimmie and gets him out of trouble.
When they were young, Dannie and Jimmie liked the same girl. Dannie, who is a Christian, always trusting in Jimmie and believing what Jimmie says, asked him if he would tell Mary that he loved her. Mary also loved Dannie, but Jimmie lied to them and told Dannie that Mary didn't love him or want to marry him, that she wanted to marry Mary. And he told Mary that Dannie wasn't going to marry. So Jimmie married Mary and Dannie was heartbroken, but was still a dutiful friend.
Jimmie is a drunk. And does not treat Mary very good. He doesn't abuse her, he just doesn't treat her the way a husband should.
He spends all the extra money at Casey's bar. Every night he goes to Casey's, and Dannie would go to bring him home at the end of the night. He always trys to protect Mary from Jimmie's stupid choices. He still loved Mary.
One night at Casey's, Jimmie met a man from Boston named Reuben O'Khyam. He is a tailor and has a very nice pleated coat. Jimmie offers to buy him a drink, but Mr. O'Khyam declines. This angered Jimmie. Then he invited Mr. O'Khyam to go on a coon hunt with him and he was to shoot the first coon. On the hunt Jimmie did some very mean things to Mr. O'Khyam and ruined his pleated coat. Well they caught the coon and headed back to Casey's, during the hunt, Dannie had helped Mr. O'Khyam and was very nice to him. At Casey's, Mr. O'Khyam found out he had been set up and they had hunted Mrs. Casey's pet coon. Mr. O'Khyam was very upset and challenged Jimmie to a fight. But Dannie intervened ands prevented Jimmie from killing Mr. O'Khyam.
Winter passed, spring came, Jimmie and Dannie had a bet going on that one of them was going to catch "The Black Bass of the Wabash". But Dannie made sure all the chores were done on both farms, so that they could go fish.
By the end of the summer, neither of them had caught the bass. One day Dannie was in town and got the mail for the Malone's and there was a box for Jimmie from Mr. O'Khyam. Dannie raced home with excitement.
Jimmie opened the box. Dannie thought that is was a cane. As Jimmie was assembling the item, he was being very sarcastic about what it could be because he knew what it was and no one else did. It was a steel fishing rod. Mary and Dannie finally get was it was after it had been assembled. Jimmie is very selfish with it, he won’t let even let Dannie hold it. Now Dannie is feeling very bad, because he was the only one who had shown kindness to Mr. O’Khyam. And because his whole life he had given everything to Jimmie. And now Jimmie starting bragging about how he would catch the Black Bass. Mary didn’t think it was very fair to Dannie, because he would have to use his old one and when they made the bet they were both equal. Mary wished with all her heart that Dannie would catch the Black Bass.
They went out the next day to fish. They fished all day, but got nothing. Then towards the evening, they finally both caught something at the same time and their lines had become entangled. They argued about who should cut the lines, then they fell into the water and started fighting. Jimmie punched Dannie in the face. Jimmie tried to goat Dannie to punch him, but Dannie wouldn’t. Then to try again he said, "That time you sent me to Mary for you, I lied to her and married her myself." Dannie jumped at him and caught him by the throat. Jimmie tried to get him off, but he couldn’t. Then Jimmie said that he just lied to make him mad. Dannie released him and asked if it was true. Now about this time Mary had come to see how everything was going. She had seen everything that had just happened and she knew the truth. She tried yelling, but nothing came out. Then she fainted. Jimmie kept telling Dannie that he had just lied to him and finally Dannie believed him.
Then they remembered why they were fighting and went to shore and pulled the lines in. On one line was the Black Bass and on the other one there was a giant catfish. Dannie decided that he would cut his line and on his line was the Black Bass. Dannie let him go and returned to his cabin.
When he arrived, he couldn’t find Mary and figured that she had gone to her sisters’ in town. He did all the chores and still no one came home. He went to the Dolan’s and found Mary there. He was informed that Mary would never return to live with Jimmie again. So Dannie went to Casey’s to find Jimmie and was told not to worry about him. So he figured he was hiding in the back room. He waited to see if he would come out until 3am, but he never did. Then he went to the Dolan’s and all the lights were out, so he figured he Mary had changed her mind and gone back home. When he got home he was so tired and fell right asleep.
When he woke up, he did all the chores. He was in the barn doing some chores and found Jimmie face down frozen in the muck. He thought Jimmie was dead. He cut his clothes from the muck and carried him to the house and sent for the doctor and Mary. Jimmie had caught double pneumonia and he had a bad heart from drinking so much. There was nothing to be done.
Jimmie called for the priest, and confessed his sins to him. The priest told Jimmie that he needed to tell Dannie, so he called Dannie in. Jimmie said two words, "Mary and Yours". Then Jimmie died.
Dannie felt responsible for his death, because he didn’t go after him. Dannie sold some of the stock and grain and made a bank account for Mary. Mary was living with her sister in town. And again Dannie was taking care of both farms.
After awhile Mary wanted to go home and be Dannie’s wife. But Dannie had put Mary out of his mind, because he felt responsible for Jimmie and he felt he could not betray his friend by marrying his wife.
One day Mary saw that Dannie was going to the mill and would be gone all day. So the Dolan’s and she cleaned and redecorated both cabins. Mary was beside herself. Dannie came home and still wasn’t thinking about Mary.
Mary was very hurt, she didn’t understand, so she went to the priest. They figured out the Jimmie had not told Dannie the truth. The next day the priest found Dannie at Jimmie’s grave. The priest could not bring himself to tell Dannie, because of the love that he had for Jimmie. But instead he told him that Jimmie must have meant that he wanted Dannie to marry Mary. Dannie ran home as fast as he could to tell Mary.
Mary didn’t understand what had happened, so she went to the priest. The priest told her, "The greatest thing in the world is self-sacrifice. The pot at the end of the Rainbow is now running over with pure gold of pure contentment, but had you and I done such a dreadful thing as to destroy the confidence of a good man in his friend, your heart could never know such joy as it knows now in this sacrifice of yours and no such blessed shining light could illuminate your face. But you did not tell him either, Mary Malone."
I really liked this book. It has a good storyline. Mrs. Porter always writes something great. I would encourage you to read this book.
As Always,
