The Essence of Thanksgiving
Published on December 1, 2007 at 2:42 PM

This Article was published in Reflections of a 18 year old girl on her way to becoming a Woman of God

Unfortunatly, we still don’t have the laptop, but we found a mouse and we can use our other desktop, so I have been able to get on a bit and work on some stuff. It still hasn’t been enough time to work on some good posts, but it has sufficed for now. I have some updates for a few things before I get to my post.

First Dad just brought "The Dark Foundations" home from the bookstore last nite. I am soo excited!!

Paulie has some videos of him holding Susanna for the first time. How sweet!! I don’t know how they did it without holding her for the last couple of days, because I had to hold Lucy like right after she was checked out and fed and everything. Just keep going to his blog daily or hourly, because he is going to be posting stuff all the time about little Sus.

And thirdly, our family could use prayer. There are multiple things that we are trying to deal with and it has been hard this past week. I know I can count on you for prayers!!

I know I didn’t post this last week for thanksgiving, but I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving time with your family. We had a non-traditional one with ours, but all the same a very great time.

I was thinking about being thankful and I didn't want to just post about everything that I am thankful for, because everyone is doing that. I want to do something special to show how grateful I am. This is how I am going to show how thankful I am this year and yes, I know Thanksgiving is over, but as my good friend, Paulie said in his post, "Why do we have one day dedicated to giving thanks? ".

What he said is very true. Why do we only have one day a year that we recognize that we need to be thankful?? We should be thankful and show it everyday. Not just on the last Thursday in November every year.

Mom did a great post on "Thankfulness, Gratitude, Gratefulness", and she gave me a little inspiration to go a little deeper into what thanksgiving really means.

Thanksgiving is:

    1. the act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors, esp. to God.

    2. an expression of thanks, esp. to God.

    3. a public celebration in acknowledgment of divine favor or kindness.

    4. a day set apart for giving thanks to God.

So pretty much thanksgiving is about God. Guess the Pilgrims had the right idea about the very essence of what Thanksgiving is really about. It was all about God to them.

They were thankful to God for bringing them safely from Europe. They were thankful for the freedom to worship God the way they wanted. They were thankful that God still protected them even after they got to America. They were thankful that He sent the Indians to help them. They were thankful to God for everything.

In writing this post, I thought I would take a look at what the Bible says about thanksgiving. Because really we have strayed soo far in our society from what Thanksgiving is really about.

We get caught up in our holidays, that I don't think we really take the time to realize what they really mean. I mean, we went from halloween decorations to Christmas ones. Thanksgiving isn't really something anyone takes the time to ponder on. That is because we are an unthankful people.

Leviticus 22:29 "And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will."

But that does not mean to do it once a year or even when you just feel like it. It means offer it of your own will. We should not have to be told that we need to be thankful or even show it. We need to do it of our own volition. God is not a god that makes his people do what they are supposed to. He wants us to do it because we are thankful and we love Him and want to show it.

The Bible talks a lot about thanksgiving, so it must be important to God. David had a lot to say about thanksgiving, and I think he must have known that it was something that God really wants from His people.

God loves it when we praise His name, but He loves it even more when we praise it with thanksgiving. Here are some verses that talk about that:

Psalm 69:30 "I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving."

Psalm 147:7 "Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:"

I really loved this one. Not only do we sing and praise God's name, but when we do, we can magnify it by doing it with thanksgiving.

Psalm 95:2 "Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms."

Psalm 100:4-5 "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations."

When we come to God, we should come with thanksgiving to Him. We should not just come only with requests and praises, but also come with thanksgiving to Him.

Psalm 107:22 "And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing"

Psalm 116:17 "I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD."

When we give thanksgiving to God it declares His wondrous works and we should rejoice in the fact that we can give Him praise that will show everyone that He is worthy of all our thanks.

Jonah 2:9  "But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD."

Our thanksgiving praise to God is something that we should not take lightly. There is so much that we have to be thankful for just to God.

2 Corinthians 9:11 "Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God."

We are truly a blessed people. Our blessings flow from God. We should automatically be giving thanks to God for everything.

Philippians 4:6 "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."

This verse is pretty well known I think, but have you noticed that it says, "Be careful for nothing." What does that mean?? I am going to think to think on that one for a bit, but I had never noticed that it said that before and I wonder what it means. Do you know what supplication means?? I have heard supplication used in the Bible a lot, but not really understood what it meant. It means: an act or instance of supplicating; humble prayer, entreaty, or petition. Not only are we supposed to pray for everything, but we are to pray with thanksgiving. That is the way we should come to God.

Colossians 4:2 "Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;"

It is repeated over and over in the Scriptures that we are to come to God with thanksgiving. We should not just come to Him with what we want, but we should always be THANKING Him.

Revelation 7:12 "Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen."

Lastly we when we are finished with our prayers, we are to end with thanksgiving too. Giving thanks to God forever and ever.

Everything should begin and end with thanksgiving to God. This Thanksgiving season, let's not only show our thankfulness on November 22nd, but everyday for the rest of our lives.

Not only is it pleasing to God to receive our thanksgiving, but it is a way we can show Him how much He means to us. Now you don't want to do that only once a year do you??

As Always,

I will pray for your family, I tried to get here with your e-mail link but it sent me to Susanna is born post. You may want to check on that. I will give you the info for template help sometime later today otherwise I will forget due to finals. I am so ready for the semester to end and am amazed at how past it went. Can you believe it is the 2nd day of December? Christmas is coming very fast.
As for Thanksgiving, we can give thanks everyday and should but for those not so thanksful people, a day devoted to it gets them to think about things they are thankful for. The day after though, it goes wayside, we need to work on that.
Blessings and prayers to your family

In the verse from Phillipians 4... another translation says, "Do not be ANXIOUS about anything..."

With that said, I think "Do not be Careful" means careful as in overly cautious, over-thinking everything. I can relate to this!

Your post is excellent. I really like what you quoted from Paulie about why would we be thankful only one day. I totally agree.

I am learning the principles of Phil. 4:6 and am reminding myself not to be over cautious and fearful... not to give way to anxiety, but to thank God continually and to place my full trust in Him!

I think this was so very important to say and also for us to understand: "But that does not mean to do it once a year or even when you just feel like it. It means offer it of your own will."
If only we could always live this.

Desiring A Mind To Work
Published on November 12, 2007 at 3:28 PM

This Article was published in Reflections of a 18 year old girl on her way to becoming a Woman of God

Work

by Henry Van Dyke

Let me but do my work from day to day,

In field or forest, at the desk or loom,

          In roaring market place or tranquil room;

Let me but find it in my heart to say,

When vagant wishes beckon me astray,

          "This is my work; my blessing, not my doom;

Of all who live, I am the one by whom

This work can best be done in the right way."

Then shall I see it not to great, nor small,

          To suit my spirit and prove my powers;

Then shall I cheerful greet the laboring hours,

and cheerfully turn, when the long shadows fall

At eventide, to play and love and rest,

Because I know for me my work is best.

Henry Van Dyke

1852-1933

Henry Van Dyke was an American clergy, educator, diplomatic, and writer. He pastored a Presbyterian church in New York, served as a chaplain during WWI, taught English literature at Princeton University and served as a US minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg. He wrote essays, poems and novels characterized by sensitivness and idealism.

I was going through an old copy notebook I had done when I was a freshman and came across this poem. I can remember when I copied this out... huh... kinda embarassing looking back and thinking of what my life was like back then. Man, I was headed down the wrong path and copying poems like this seemed ridiculous to me. It was school because it wasn't a textbook. But I see now that homeschooling isn't about textbooks, its about furthering your child's knowledge by engaging them with what interests them.

Looking back, I am not delighted that Mom made me copy this poem done. So anyway...as I read it I thought, hey, I can do an essay on this because it has been something I am struggling with.

Nehemiah 4:6

"So we built the wall and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work."

How many of us don't have a mind to work, because we have other things, funner things to do than work?? Now I am a hard worker when I want to be. I don't love to work tho, so sometimes I will shirk and not do jobs because I am lazy and someone else can do them.

Job 14:15

"You shall desire the work of Your hands. "

I hate doing dishes most of all. I don't know why I don't like doing dishes so much, but I just don't.

I don't like working outside, because I hate being dirty and being the prima donna/perfectionist that I am when I get dirty I take a while to get cleaned up and presentable, so its just a chore to get dirty and then clean again.

I don't mind cleaning and picking up as long as I know where everything goes. And I don't mind organizing or straightening. Actually it is quite enjoyable to me to organize and straightening this up. That may just be the perfectionist in me tho. ;)

But I just don't like working and sometimes that not liking to work gets the better of me and I blow things off. And usually it turns out I made the wrong decision by not working.

Ecclesiastes 12:14

"For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil."

I know everyone must struggle with this and if you don't then you are far ahead of me. I applaud you!!
This poem goes on to talk about how no one can do my work for me. Only I can do my work the best way. I am the only one for the job. I am the only one who can complete it the right way.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might ; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the graver where you are going."

Work is an all day, everyday thing. Our work is NEVER complete. Everyday there is something to do. My dad goes to work everyday, so that must mean that work is never done. Everyone's work is never done.

Psalm 104:23

"Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening."

When I work, I want to do it until it is complete. Until its DONE. I hate things that aren't done all the way. That is part of the reason I don't like work, I guess. If I can't complete something to the very fullest it needs to be done, I just don't want to and won't do it. But I don't think that is necessarily right. I must work and do it even tho I may not be able to finish it. But I suppose that if I work at it, it will be completed sometime. Whether sooner or later, it will be done.

Genesis 2:2

"And on the seventh day, God ended His work which He had done and He rested on the seventh day from all His work He had done."

When we work and complete it, we have a reward. Whether its the reward of accomplishment or the reward of the fruits of our work, but we do have a reward. God had the reward of resting on the seventh day. When we are finished with a task, we should always remember to look back on it and reflect whether it was done correctly. I mean by our attitudes and if it was completed the correct way.

2 Thessalonians 3:10

"For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat."

Just as there is a reward at the end of our work, there is a punishment if we do not do it. I have heard this all my life, and it has been true. When I don't do my work I don't get the rewards.

If we do not work, and do it correctly, then we have not done what God wants us too. There is no such thing as a free lunch. There is nothing free in this country. Everything has a price.

We were made to want to work and to do it willingly. If we don't do our work the right way, God will know and there will be consequences. We need to work and we need to want to work, we need to want to complete our work with a happy heart.

That is one thing I am going to work on: my work attitude. Hopefully with God's help I can get over my bad attitude and I will come to like to do what I need to do. Not only do I need to work on actually doing it, but also having a good attitude while doing it.

My Mom should have been a speaker for the world because she has all this wisdom and if you read her blog you only get a 5th of everything she has to offer. My Mom puts things into perspective so much and altho I can't stand somethings she shows me about myself, it doesn't change how true it is. She truly is amazing and I am so proud to call her my mama.

Things have not been going very well this week, so she will probably be very surprised to read this. lol

Anyway to get back to my thought train here, yesterday she was explaining to one of my siblings how if she doesn't do her job, then it ripples to others who can't complete their job because she won't complete hers.

Here is the instance: Blondie is our golden lab mix who is very hairy and sheds like crazy. She is by the back door in the laundry room. Now I am in charge of laundry and I am supposed to fold laundry as it comes out of the dryer. But having Blondie right by the dryer it disgusts me to have to stand there and fold clean laundry right out of the dryer. I mean, if something falls on the floor it will land right on her carpet with all the dog hair. Then it will be full of dog hair and I will just have to wash it again. ugh... So instead of folding them right out of the dryer, I put them in a basket and take it to the parlor where there is no dog hair. But alot of times, I take it in there and have to leave to do something else and forget about the laundry. So it sits for days sometimes til I go out there and try and complete it.

Now you are asking, 'why is the dog by the dryer in the first place??' Well that is where my sister comes in. We got Blondie before Lucy was born and my Mom trained that dog to sit and lay down when commanded. And since Lucy was born my Mom has not been able to take care of her and keep her trained. So the responsibility was given to the person who wanted to get Blondie. Well the person has not kept up the training so now she is untrained. So Blondie now stays on the back door. That is why she is by the dryer.

So you see how Blondie's owner not doing what she is supposed to hinders me from doing what I need to and so I try to do what I need to another way and don't complete it.

Now I do not completely blame my not doing what I am supposed to on the other person, but to an extent it is their fault.

What I am saying is that when we don't complete our tasks, then we hinder others from doing theirs and it causes so many problems for our families. Our families need to have order and balance. When we don't do what we are supposed to we offset that balance and put things out of order.

We can't have an out of order and unbalanced life. Have you ever heard the saying, "You have been weighed and measured and found wanting."?? If you take some time and really think about it, it is really profound. The scales must be balanced or what happens?? One side will fall. Can you name one area in your life that you want to fall?? I sure can't. We HAVE to have a balanced and ordered life or we will never be able to move forward. We will always be fixing what got bandaged up. If you got a deep cup that need stitches or surgery, would you want the doctor to just bandage it up and say "ok that should do it."?? I don't think so. We need to stop bandaging things and start fixing them. Have you ever put a band-aid on a cut just to have it come off because the sticky has gotten wet or dirty?? I have. I have found that when we bandage things up instead of fixing them the right way, we are just asking for them to fall apart again. That goes not just for physical things, but relationships and emotions too. We have to stop bandaging things and just fix the problem area.

My task for, what the rest of my life, is going to be to learn to have a good attitude about working and work to accomplish and finish. I mean, I don't want God to stop working on me.

Philippians 1:6

"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."

He promised to complete the good work He started in me and why shouldn't I do the same thing?? Why shouldn't I complete the work God has appointed to me??

It amazes me that God really did give us EVERYTHING we need to know in his Book. Why should we look elsewhere, when everything we need to know about life and living according to God is in His Word??

As Always,

Henry Van Dyke, name sounds familiar but I can't recall. Anyway, I was trying to get him to see the point of view from our perspective and to think back to when the constitution was written. If women weren't allowed to work after they got married anymore, I wouldn't feel "oppressed" or whatever they call it. I think it's the children who are "oppressed" anymore. They are forced to go to daycares, constantly have babysitters ( occasional baby sitters are different than all the time.), go to school, go to before school daycare and after school programs until as late as 6pm. Then they are whisked off to play sports and do activies, hardly getting a supper, then they come home, take a bath and go to bed, or maybe try to finish up all that homework they require nowadays, then go to bed. When do they have time for their children?? Um, they sadly don't. I just hope my sister will realize that too. Right now, she wants to work once her children start school or even before, or never stop working.
I have to agree. Too many churches focus on religion itself, they are too much " of this world". They don't focus on God, they don't try to be Christ like and don't seem to learn from their mistakes. I'll leave it at that.

Yeah, I'm that way too. I'm a perfectionist and I luv organizing things. I'm not a big fan of chores, but I'll sometimes see things in the house that are messed up and clean and organize it. I especially hate having a messy room, so normally my room is the cleanest in the upstairs!

Hello Amanda,
Good post... I liked how you had the verses...very nice touch. Well.... work...I really don't mind it.
Unless it is something I really don't like doing....say...pulling up blackberries or picking green beans when it is 90 outside.

But I don't mind doing my daily work...sewing costume orders or just cleaning up the house, laundry, cooking.... I don't like doing dishes...not much fun, by brothers usually do that if I made the meal so that is nice. As for working outside...I'm ok with it if I have sunscreen on so I don't turn red...(I burn really easily...arg...) ,but I know what you mean...sometimes it isn't much fun to get dirty if you just got all clean. :)

Well thanks again for a good post.
talk to you later,

RYC: Oh good point! Man, I have problems with that also. It is so easy just to go in general and say "bless so 'n' so." The Lords prayer is a great guide for a basic prayer. I mean, Jesus wasn't saying that we should only pray the lords prayer, he was giving us a guide.

Our Father in heaven, (praise)
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come, (my will line up with yours)
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread. (supplication)
Forgive us our sins, (confession)
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, (supplication)
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.(praise)
Now and for ever. Amen

If we pray in that manner, praise, supplication, confession, supplication and then praise, it makes a well rounded prayer.

I will TRY to get that done this week, I am not making promises though ;)

Grrrreat article! I so needed to read this. In fact, everything my blog friends have been posting this week have spoken directly to me and certain areas in my life. It's really been amazing. You did so well on this and I can totally relate. While I don't consider myself a perfectionist it sounds like we share some simliarities in character. I love organizing things and making this place look pretty so my sisters call me a "neat freak" (but not to often). Thank you so much for this. It really hits home. :-)

I'm glad the hymn I posted ministered to you in one way or another. I wanted to post a hymn about giving thanks that would tie in with what several others have said, and I came across this one and it was perfect! Way to go Isaac Watts! Lol. ;-)

I'd best be on my way. Have a lovely day as we work on working.

My thing is that I love physical work, and hate school work. In fact, I sometime reward myself for finishing a paper or something by letting myself go and work out.

And yes I have a little trouble getting here, but if i like let it load for 20mins while i do other things or eat breakfast, it is had then loaded so yeah.

Wow, what a great entry. I know it applies to me!

I awarded you! Sort of like a late birthday present. You deserve it:-)

God Bless, Christine
