We are watching all 5 season of SMALLVILLE before the 6th season comes out.
The first season Lex Luthor comes to Smallville and Clark saves his life. Therefore they become good friends. It about Clark finding out who he is and what his destiny is.
As I watch it I realized some allegories to being a Believer.
Lex's father, Lionel Luthor, sent Lex to Smallville to run the fertilizer plant in Lionel's words, "to train him", but actually to be able to control Lex.
Lex used to live in Metropolis. He was a spoiled rich kid who didn't know or care about consequences. He was in trouble with the law, but having Lionel Luthor as your father helped with that. Everyone everywhere was on Lionel's payroll, so if Lex was in trouble they made a load of money to make it disappear.
Anyway, he is sent to Smallville where Lionel can keep an eye on him.
During the season Lex changes. He brings the plant back to being a profit, and is doing things that are right.
Then towards the end of the season, Lionel wants Lex to come work in Metropolis with him, since he is doing so well.
But Lex doesn't want to leave. He has a good life here. He has friends, he not partying, he is on the right path and it is killing is father that he is doing something constructive.
So the last episode Lionel makes a visit to Smallville to give a speech to the 2,500 employees of the Smallville plant, but he doesn't tell Lex the natural of it.
Lionel closes the plant and blames "the management", therefore blaming Lex. Lionel puts 2,500 people out of work because Lex didn't do what he wanted. So Lex tries to change the situation. He uses all his resources to force and employee buyout of the plant. He wants to be out from under the control of Lionel so bad, he uses everything he has.
Now think about this:
When we become a Believer and want to live for /in God we change. We are a new creation/person.
Doesn't sin/world, try to bring us back to the old creation/self? Doesn't it tempt us with the old sins that we used to be chained too? Doesn't it want to bring us back to the place of temptation that we used to live in, so that we can be tempted all the time and fail miserably?
So in a sense----
Smallville is like Jesus, being the one who changed us to a new person.
Lionel is like sin/world, being the one trying to be in control and take us back to the place of the old person.
Lex is like the new creation/person, being the one trying to fight off the old person with everything he has.
Oh how that old self wants to be in control again and the new self having to constantly fight it off.
Something that we as Believers need to do. Use everything we have to fight off the attacks of the old self.
I don't think personally that we will ever be rid of the old self. It is a part of our nature, because it is our flesh. Not at least until we are only spirit and that will be in heaven.
Just like Lex won't be rid of Lionel, unless he kills him, which he wouldn't do that.
But if we just remember John 13:15, "I have given an example to follow. Do as I have done to you."
I think it will greatly assist you in getting the old self under control.
But remember, you can't do it alone. Just like Lex couldn't force the buyout without the employees. Jesus was tempted by his flesh too, but by prayer did he fight it off. Jesus only had God to help him, but when you ask Jesus to help you, God helps to. Jesus has been where you are. He knows what to do.
You will be tempted often to do the things that the old self did, but if you have Jesus helping you fight off the temptations then it shouldn't be as hard as if you were doing it by your lonesome.
Jesus promised not to give you more that you could handle. So be encouraged! You may think that you can't handle the temptations of the old self, but Jesus knows what you can handle.
These trials you may face are going to help you grow more in the Lord. The reason being for these trials is so that next time when something happens like this you will be experienced in that area and you will be able to battle it and come out victorious. Even if you didn’t win this time.
You don’t win the first time because you weren’t mature enough in the Lord to battle it. It was just your training ground. Good thing that God always welcomes us back even when we lose!
Just like a game, when you lose you learn from your mistakes. Don’t give up! Strategize your game method. Learn from your mistakes, and next time try a different angle.
