PAKISTAN — Islamic Extremists Beat Evangelist, Steal Rickshaw – VOM Sources
On Jan. 26, evangelist Azir was kicked and punched in the face by Muslim extremists after transporting Christians and evangelizing tools on his Scripture-covered rickshaw. The Voice of the Martyrs contacts report Azir was assaulted while returning from a Bible and Christian literature distribution in Punjab, Pakistan. Azir helped transport believers home in his motorcycle rickshaw, given to him by VOM in March 2008. “After the distribution and a blessed time with the people, the team returned to his village. Azir helped believers to get to their home. They were holding their Bibles, leadership materials, _He Lived Among Us_ and Action Packs. This drew the anger of local Muslims who saw them,” VOM contacts said. “Then they beat him. They kicked and punched his face. His tooth was broken and he had a small injury on his lips. They snatched his rickshaw, thank God he was not seriously hurt,” VOM contacts added. Following the intervention of a village leader, Azir’s rickshaw was returned. VOM encourages you to pray for evangelist Azir and other believers in Pakistan. Praise God for their faithfulness and courage in the midst of persecution. Ask God to continue strengthening them and for blessings on Azir’s rickshaw business.
Isaiah 54:14
In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
INDIA — Attacks on Christians Continue – VOM Sources
In recent weeks attacks on believers in India have continued.
* Kerala — On Jan. 22, Pastor T. T. Abraham was beaten and kicked by three Hindu extremists while he was distributing Bible tracts in Vaithiry, Kerala state. The assailants fled when they saw someone passing nearby. Pastor Abraham sustained injuries to his neck, stomach and back.
* Assam — On Jan. 24, 500 Christians returning from a priest’s consecration service were attacked by Hindu extremists when they attempted to return home by boat from Majuli Island in Assam state. Hindus hurled insults at the Christians, accused them of forcible conversion, and beat several people. The Christians fled in fear and did not return to the boat dock until later in the evening, when they were able to leave the island under police protection.
* Maharashtra — On Jan. 26, members of the Navjivan Fellowship Church were conducting a baptism in the city of Gangapur, Maharashtra state when a group of Hindu militants armed with cricket stumps, iron rods and sticks arrived. Shouting “Jai Shri Ram” (hail to Lord Ram), the militants beat those present, including women and children. They also damaged the car of one Christian. One believer was injured in the head and others sustained broken limbs.
Pray for healing for those injured in these attacks. Pray that those who accuse Christians of forcible conversion will be silenced. Ask God to enable Christians in India to grow in Christ- likeness through their trials.
Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
ERITREA - Christians Die in Prisons — Compass Direct News
Mehari Gebreneguse Asgedom, 42, died in solitary confinement at the Mitire Military Confinement Center on Jan. 16 from torture and complications from diabetes, according to Compass News Direct. In October, Teklesenbet Gebreab Kiflom, died while imprisoned for his faith at the Wi’a Military Confinement Center. He was reported to have died after prison commanders refused to give him medical attention for malaria. Pray for the families of the deceased believers. Ask God to encourage other Christians suffering for Christ’s sake in Eritrean prisons.
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

INDIA - Pastor beaten in Andhra Pradesh – VOM Sources
On January 16, Pastor Yakobu, 37, was attacked by Hindu extremists at his home in Gumpula village, Andhra Pradesh, India, according to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. At midnight, Pastor Yakobu was home alone when he heard a knock on his door. When he answered, six men burst in, beat him, cut him with a knife and shaved his head. They also set fire to his clothes and books and shouted that they didn't want any pastors in the village. The next morning, Pastor Yakobu and several other local pastors went to the police station and filed a complaint against the attackers. Pray for healing for Pastor Yakobu. Pray that he, his wife and their children will rely on God's guidance and care. Pray for an outpouring of the Lord's Spirit in India to embolden and strengthen Christians facing trials for their faith.
Psalm 91:16
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
SRI LANKA - UPDATE: Christians lobby against anti-conversion bill – VOM Sources
In February, the Sri Lankan parliament is due to debate a draft bill entitled "Prohibition of Forcible Conversion of Religion." The debate on this bill comes as the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress launched a report in January that contained highly inflammatory and false accusations against the Christian community in an attempt to bolster support for the repressive legislation. The National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka is urging immediate attention in advocating against the proposed anti-conversion bill. Anti-conversion bills are often used to stop Christians from evangelizing. Pray this legislation is not passed into law in Sri Lanka. Ask God to encourage believers to remain faithful in their commitment to Christ despite attempts by the government to silence them. Thank God for the faithfulness of believers in Sri Lanka.
Romans 8:31
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
CHINA – Prominent House Church Leader Forced Out of Beijing – China Aid Association
On Jan. 16, more than a dozen Public Security Bureau (PSB) officers forcibly escorted Pastor “Bike” Zhang Mingxuan from another pastor’s home in Beijing and forcibly put him on a bus to Henan province. Pastor Bike went to Beijing to Pastor Hua Huiqi’s home to see the church leader’s father, Hua Zaichen who is dying. But Chinese authorities continue to refuse to allow Pastor Bike and his family to stay in the country’s capital city. Government officials broke into the house while Pastor Bike was praying for Hua Zaichen, who is 91. Chinese authorities are also preventing the ailing man’s wife, 79-year-old Shuang Shuying who is in prison, from seeing him. Please continue praying for Pastor Hua’s family as they go through immense challenges. Ask God to encourage Pastor Bike to continue his ministry despite the Chinese government persecution. Praise God for his resilience and ask him to not lose heart in well-doing.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

So this week’s prayer updates are:
SRI LANKA – Anti-conversion Law Under Review in Parliament – VOM Canada
On Jan. 6, the Buddhist- led Jathika Hela Urumaya (National Heritage Party) presented an anti-conversion bill to the Sri Lankan Parliament. The purpose of the bill, which was first presented in 2004, is to "provide prohibition of conversion from one religion to another by use of force or allurement or by fraudulent means." The current legislation no longer contains two clauses that the Supreme Court deemed unconstitutional following challenges from several civil and religious rights groups. However, Christians and other religious minorities remain concerned because the bill, if passed, will introduce serious penalties for those found guilty of "forcibly" converting people, including jail terms, and could violate the right to religion and worship in the country. Ask the Lord to intervene so that this legislation will not be passed. Pray for wisdom and endurance for those serving Christ in Sri Lanka.
Psalm 27:1-3
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
KYRGYSTAN – UPDATE- Restrictive Religion Law Passed – Forum 18 News
The draft religion law approved by Kyrgyzstan's parliament in early November has been signed and approved by President Kurmanbek Bakiev, according to Forum 18 News. Religious leaders across Kyrgyzstan have expressed concern for their communities, especially those with small numbers. The new religion law stipulates that 200 adult citizens are necessary to apply for state registration, whereas previously only 10 citizens were required. The new law also bans the involvement of children in religious organizations, forbids religious groups from spreading their faith and prohibits the distribution of religious material. Pray for believers in Kyrgystan to remain faithful to Christ despite this repressive law. Ask God to encourage them and give smaller communities creative ways and means to continue meeting and worshiping together.
Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
INDIA – UPDATE - Relief Camps Closed in Orissa - VOM Sources
Government authorities in Orissa state have shut down relief camps forcing thousands of Christians displaced by the wave of violence that began last August to flee, according to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. Believers have been left without adequate protection against further attacks or compensation for damages sustained. Many of the believers were threatened with violence while in the camps and fear further attacks if they return to their homes, many of which have not been rebuilt. Officials are providing some of the refugees with 10,000 rupees (US$201). However, the sum is inadequate to meet their long-term needs and it is unlikely that many will be able to secure employment, as local Hindus often refuse to hire Christians. Ask God to protect believers as they face potential challenges and danger. Pray their needs are met and for them to find employment so they can provide for their families.
Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

CHINA - Deathly Ill Husband Denied Visitation with his Imprisoned Wife – China Aid Association
Chinese government authorities have denied Hua Zaichen, 91, visitation with his imprisoned wife, 79-year-old Shuang Shuying, according to China Aid Association (CAA).
Zaichen, who is deathly ill, requested a final meeting with his wife to say his goodbyes, but officials refused to grant the request. “Authorities say Shuang Shuying is not allowed to leave prison before February 8, 2009, the end of her two-year sentence. Officials stated that if her husband died before then, she would be allowed to see his body for 10 minutes and would have to be chained, handcuffed, shackled and wearing a prison uniform,” CAA added. Pray for this family that has endured many hardships for the sake of their faith. Pray for Shuang Shuying to be released. Praise God for their courage!
Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
INDIA - Four Christians Arrested in Madhya Pradesh – VOM Sources
On Jan. 5, police arrested four Christians in the village of Kushalpura, Madhya Pradesh, India on false charges of forcible conversion. At 10:00 a.m., Pastor Kantilal Bhuria went to the home of a local Christian where 25 believers were gathered for prayer. During the service, a mob of Hindu extremists barged into the house and accused Pastor Bhuria of forcibly converting Hindus. The extremists verbally abused those present and beat a Christian woman. The police arrived on scene after receiving a phone call from the attackers and arrested four believers. At last report, these Christians remained in detention. Pray for the release of these Christians. Ask God to give them and other suffering believers in India grace, wisdom and endurance as they serve Him.
1 Peter 5:10-11
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
KAZAKHSTAN – President Sends Repressive Law for Constitutional Review – Forum 18 News
President Nursultan Nazarbaev of Kazakhstan has sent a repressive new law which aims to severely limit freedom of religion or belief to the country's Constitutional Council, Forum 18 News Service reported. Meanwhile, the government continues to repress the exercise of freedom of thought, conscience and belief. In January a Baptist pastor, Aleksandr Kerker, was fired from his job because he led worship without state permission. Pastor Kerker lost his job after authorities visited his employer. Pray for believers in Kazakhstan facing the possibility of harsher conditions if this repressive law is passed. Ask God to provide for Pastor Kerker and his family during this challenging time. Pray this pastor forgives his persecutors and for God to touch the heart of these authorities.
Philipians 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
UZBEKISTAN – Children and Parents Threatened for Attending Services – Forum 18 News
Police in southeast Uzbekistan have begun a campaign against children attending places of worship, Forum 18 News Service reported. The authorities' campaign, which also uses the state-controlled mass media, attacks schools and parents who allow children to attend religious "sects." Pray for Christian families who have come under scrutiny in Uzbekistan. Ask God to give them courage to continue serving the Lord despite what authorities say.
Psalm 91
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

So this week’s prayer updates are:
CHINA – Christians Beaten, House Churches Raided – China Aid Association
Several incidents of attacks on Christians occurred in China during Christmas celebrations, China Aid Association reported. They are:
* On Dec. 24, about 40 police officers raided a construction site in the village of Jingjia, Sichuan province where Christian volunteers were helping to rebuild homes destroyed in a massive earthquake on May 12, 2008. The reportedly intoxicated officers beat and swore at those present and seized Bibles, hymnals, televisions and other items belonging to the Christians. They refused to present legal documents authorizing the raid. Several Christian volunteers were eventually taken into custody by officials.
* Also on Dec. 24, nine Christian women were arrested in Yucheng county, Henan province while leading a Christmas celebration. Five of the women were released the next day after their families paid fines ranging from 1,500 t! o 3,500 Yuan (approximately US$10-US$23) while the others are reportedly still in detention.
* At least two Chinese house churches were raided while holding Christmas celebrations on Christmas Day. Several leaders were arrested in the raids -- two in Bozhou city, Anhui province and seven in Qitai county, Xinjiang Autonomous Region. At last report, all of these Christians were still imprisoned.
Pray for the release of those detained. Pray that Christians in China will continue to stand firm in their faith in the face of violence and intimidation.
Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
INDIA – Church Leaders Attacked – VOM Sources
Praise God in 2008, Christians celebrated Christmas in relative peace and stability in Kandhamal district, Orissa. However in Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh this was not the case. VOM sources report several pastors and prayer group leaders were attacked and severely beaten by Hindu extremists while returning home from a Christmas prayer meeting near the suburb of Ramnagar in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. At the time of the report, three Hindus had been arrested for their involvement in the attack. Ask God to grant healing and strength for those injured. Pray that the perpetrators will turn to faith in Christ and become a demonstration of God's love and mercy to others.
Joshua 1:8-9
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
TAJIKISTAN – Restrictive Religion Law Proposed – Forum 18 News
On Nov. 19 a restrictive draft law was sent by Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon to the parliament for approval, according to Forum 18 News. The draft law allegedly restricts the activity of religious organizations, limits religious education, and imposes state censorship on religious literature. If the law passes, religious organizations currently registered would be forced to re-register by July 1, 2009. However, the draft law's stringent requirements would make it difficult for some groups to continue to qualify for registration. Pray that this law will not pass parliament. Ask God to work in the lives of Tajikistan's leaders so they will turn to Him.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

ERITREA – Approximately 100 Christians Arrested – VOM Canada
Since late November, approximately 100 Christians, including men, women and children have been arrested by Eritrean authorities, VOM Canada reported. The wave of house arrests began in northern Eritrean cities and moved to southern regions before reaching the capital, Asmara, on Dec. 12. Some of the detained Christians were reportedly transferred to a military facility and were severely mistreated. Local sources indicate that an unspecified number may have died due to untreated injuries sustained in detention. Pray for the release of those detained. Ask God to comfort those who have lost loved ones. Pray that Eritrean Christians will continue to follow Christ's example of faithfulness, even at great cost. Pray that Eritrea's leaders will repent and come to faith in Christ.
1 Peter 2:21
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
BANGLADESH – Christians Held Captive – Compass Direct News
On Dec. 10, 13 believers who converted to Christianity from Buddhism four months ago were forcibly held captive by Buddhist clerics and local officials in Rangamati district, Chittagong division, Bangladesh, Compass Direct News reported. In an attempt to coerce them to reconvert to Buddhism, the Christians were reportedly pressured into undergoing Buddhist rituals, such as shaving their heads and wearing saffron robes. According to local Christian leaders, believers in this predominantly Buddhist area often face eviction from their homes or bodily harm if they refuse to return to Buddhism. Pray that these Christians will be released unharmed. Pray that they will cling to God for their strength. Ask God to work in the hearts of those who oppose His followers in this area.
Psalm 63:8
My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
CHINA – Church Building Destroyed, Believers Beaten – China Aid Association
On Dec. 17, the officially registered Chengnan Christian Church of Tinghu district in Jiangsu province was attacked by a mob led by government officials, according to China Aid Association. Over 50 Christians were gathered for worship when police officers barged in and dragged several believers outside where more than a thousand people were gathered, including government officials and security guards. The crowd then demolished the church's office, training center and cafeteria and confiscated church property. Ten believers were beaten when they tried to stop the destruction. The church has faced ongoing harassment from government officials and had obtained a court order on the evening of Dec. 16 to protect their building from such an attack. It is suspected that the destruction was the result of officials and powerful businessmen working in collusion to obtain the coveted church property by force. Pray for these Christians in the aftermath of this attack. Ask God to give healing to those injured. Pray that those responsible will come to repentance and be reconciled to God.
Romans 8:11
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
