Susie-Q&A
• Sep. 14, 2006 - Week Three, Winding Down
I can't believe how quickly the days pass. I rarely get everything done. I have focused primarily on homeschooling to the detriment of the house. Yes, we need to take up our helper chores again (moving threw us off), but wow, it just takes so much time!
Today, we worked on math, phonics, art, history, and spelling placement in Spelling Power. I learned more about the Crimean War. I'd heard of the Charge of the Light Brigade (via Tennyson's poem, mainly), but had no idea which war was its setting. Again I ask: Why didn't I learn this in school? It's a crying shame that schools do not teach history these days. By the way, our history activity book pointed us to an online audio gem: Trumpeter Landfrey, one of the survivors of the Battle of Balaklava, sounds the same bugle call that was sounded before the 600 rode in. Just a neat bit of history there. The recording was made in 1890. Reading a survey like Story of the World makes me want to dig in and find other sources to learn more, just for my own information, but there's no time.
We are using Little Annie's Art Book of Etiquette & Good Manners for our art instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are very simple exercises with cartoonish drawings, but perfect for my children's ages. Somehow, the directed activities are right up their alley. They get very interested in what they are doing. I love that it teaches manners at the same time. Maybe it will gentle my ruffians a bit.
I keep telling myself I'll catch up on everything Saturday. But Saturday is set aside for yard saling and trips to the library and such-like. I guess the weather will turn against yard saling pretty soon anyway.
I did the Menus4Moms menu this week and the food has been good, but over-abundant for my picky crew. DH is trying to lose some weight and will probably want to eat lighter than this in the future, so I'm checking out a website my mother sent my way: deliciousdecisions.org. I think I'll put tomorrow's meat in the freezer and dine off leftovers for a while. Whew! Tonight, we had ham, mac-n-cheese, snap peas, and banana pudding. Talk about your comfort foods. As much as I love making a full meal, it means two dishwasher loads plus a lot of work for not a lot of kudos from the fam. I'd rather just buy chicken nuggets for the kiddos and quick salads for DH. Cheaper, really.
I'd better close this ramble and get the second dishwasher load done. Thank heaven for those "household servants." :)

• Sep. 15, 2006 - "catch up on Saturday"
at some points in our homeschooling career, (current total: 32 student years completed) just keeping our heads above water has been all we can manage. This year we are actually managing to work with the current, at least thus far. :)
