Susie-Q&A
• Feb. 14, 2007 - Wintry Day
We are having a bit o' weather here. It's snow mixed with freezing rain and sleet. Needless to say, I didn't stop to admire the scenery when I put the garbage out last night. I was wearing backless shoes and the snow was deep enough to freeze my feet; yep, I'm definitely a transplant.
It does look pretty, though the stuff is treacherous.
This being northern VA (i.e., still on the very cusp of the South), DH has another snow day. I'm not sure what we'll do today, but I think we'll continue with homeschooling and I'll make a chicken stock for a black bean soup, and maybe do some baking and yogurt-making as well. Maybe I can attempt the volcano science project today. Then again, maybe not. I think it's a two-part project anyway, so we might at least try to build it. The eruption can be scheduled for another day. Would that all volcanic activity were so easy to predict.
As per yogurt: DH says my yogurt looks like monkey snot, but he still eats it willingly, and so do the kids. He's right, though. The consistency reminds us both of the polymer the kids and I made last March out of glue and borax (I put pics of it on the blog at the time). I'm not sure if my starter is at fault. I've tried making it with reconstituted dry milk, and I've tried it with regular 2% (with a cup of dry milk mixed in), and I still can't get firm yogurt. It may be the additives. I flavor it with vanilla and sugar in before culturing it.
My mission: first attempt a small batch of plain yogurt, then if that fails, go to a whole new starter. My life is full of such mystery and intrigue!
Pudge has been a real pip these last couple of days. I don't know if maybe the table food he's been eating is bugging his tummy, or he's coming down with something (sounded snuffly this morning), or if he's teething. But he deliberately whacked me with his hard head this morning and was grabbing at my face in a very naughty way. He's been fussy all day long. Sigh. He's a pretty cranky babe as it is, but right now it's all. day. long. I'm thinking about slinging him in a backpack. It's been a while and I'm out of practice, and my creaky knees can't take too much of it...but at least then he won't be screaming until I pick him up and it will keep him out of trouble.
I should probably go start the morning laundry. Signing off... |

I wish I could pop #3 in the sling and carry him around, but my belly's too big.
I hope he gets happier. Happy Valentine's Day!
