Susie-Q&A

• Dec. 6, 2005 - Q. Snow??

The boss told me as we were leaving that it could, maybe, possibly, SNOW this weekend.  That would be a most unusual occurrence for us.  But in no way am I bringing this up with the children; I'd never hear the end of it.  I did just tell Bug that it's supposed to get very cold this weekend (for us...in the twenties).

I had a better time today because I was able to leave work and take the children to the co-op (which was fun).  I didn't feel as out-of-touch with them as a result.  I got a bit of misc. filing done at the office and I should be getting help with my many questionable stacks as the week progresses, so at least I'll be busy at work.

Q.  How should I handle it when I say "no" to something (for a good reason) and a child fusses about it?  Any takers on that one?

Q.  What should be the consequence for unauthorized opening and eating advent chocolates?  I was not here to administer immediate consequences.  I'm thinking:  no advent chocolates for the offender for the next three days, given the 4yo perp ate three boxes' worth.

Both questions relate to 4yo (Scrub), by the way.

Anyhow, I'm ordering those prints from AOL today.  If the S&H isn't exorbitant, that is.  I'll let y'all know if it's a good deal.

Lots to do, and I'm hoping for an early bedtime tonight.

Later!

Susannah

• Dec. 7, 2005 - objections to "no"

Well, dependent on the age of the child. If you are specifically dealing with a little one with a tantrum, we used to ignore the tantrum/noise, pick up the screaming child, gently place him in his room, and tell him that when he had calmed himself he could come out because that kind of behavior is not appropriate; CALMLY continue with the answer of "no"; and, when the child is calm, explain the reason behind it. Our eldest is great with this; however, our six year old still needs some work, as exhibited to me just last night. :) Not a tantrum, but a lot of resistance to the answer.

What I said above should be good for Scrub. Agree, too, that the no chocolate for three days is a good consequence which relates to the offense.

Susie, you're a great mom! Working and trying to do everything at home is very hard. You are in my prayers. We'll be praying for your DH job-wise, and for you to be able to get back home full time. HUGS to you and yours! L
