Susie-Q&A
• Jul. 7, 2009 - Why the Left Hates Palin's Children (Revised)
I don't write a whole lot about Sarah Palin, but I've always liked her. Her perspective runs a bit more populist than my own, probably, but she's a mom of many, and obviously loves her children and values her family life, all things I can appreciate. I share her pro-life views, and she comes from a church tradition similar to my own. I admire her independent spirit, her political savvy, and her ability to juggle life as a public servant. I thought she was the better half of the McCain/Palin ticket (not fond of McCain).
I don't claim to know all the motivations behind the Palin resignation. I can guess, though, and believe my mother-sense leads me to guess with some accuracy. Beyond that, I will not speculate here.
I will say this, however (this has been building for some time):
I believe the visceral hate response of the left toward her family is, ironically but not surprisingly, touched off by its most innocent member.
Trig Palin rests in his mother's arms.
The left's antipathy toward Sarah herself could be explained in a political context (though political philosophy is of a piece with one's guiding beliefs, so naturally it goes deeper than that).
But the clawing at her children indicates a fury born of hell. And Trig is the real focal point. They hate his very existence. I remember one columnist in particular stating she was sickened by the sight of Trig on stage with his mother.
Sarah Palin had the temerity to love Trig unconditionally, as any good mother naturally would. In so doing, she exposed the monstrous attitude of the left toward human life at its most blameless and helpless.

Something so normal, natural, delightful, lovely...good as a mother's love for her sweet baby, must at all costs be defaced and ridiculed...

...for the left, in embracing a death-culture in its most inhumane form (the dismembering of their own offspring for the crime of not being wanted), have disfigured the glorious image of God in themselves. They have thus opened the door to the dark forces in the world that seek blood, particularly the blood of children. Thus are babies in particular dehumanized.
Evils against children, such as abortion, infanticide, child slavery, child prostitution, molestation, children viewed as mere possessions or "life accessories," are certainly nothing new to fallen humanity. But how telling that in our postmodern era, when men and women knowingly turn their gaze away from abiding truth, such horrors have come into full, noxious bloom. We have sprinted ahead of the idol worshippers who fueled their sacrificial fires with their young, and surpassed ancient cultures in the vast numbers of children we put to death--and our reasons are, if possible, more spurious ("just because" is deemed reason enough).
All but a very few are silent on the issues of enslavement and trafficking in children. You don't hear about it at all from the self-described victim groups in our nation. Many good and decent people still shine a light in this dark world. Much of that work remains unseen and unheralded, as it should be.
But why is the opposite embraced by our public consciousness? Why is there so little true goodness and selflessness honored on the national stage? Why do so few of them speak from our flat screens or write for our newspapers, or blog? Why don't they win the Nobel Prizes? Why aren't they embraced by the spirit of the age? (Think about that.) Spirit of Corrie Ten Boom and Irena Sendler, meet the spirit of the American feminist.
Sarah Palin is a politician and an imperfect human being--not above criticism, of course. But she is also a child of God, and a mother. And her witness of love for her children apparently really ticks off the powers of hell. She's shown amazing restraint over issues wherein I, personally, would have been sorely tempted to let loose. She has exercised what I, as a mother, recognize as great self-control over very sensitive matters, whereas her mockers have exercised none. As all mothers know, when it comes to our children...step back. Who can blame her for expressing a little indignation?
Children like Trig might be conveniently disposable in the eyes of the left, but why shouldn't the left give Sarah Palin a break when it comes to her motherhood? The answer lies in the spirit inspiring it all.
I suppose those who have defaced their own humanity in defacing others' deserve our prayers and pity. May God remove the scales they have fixed over their own eyes. May He grant the Palins grace to forgive, and peace in their home. May those who wish otherwise for them take a good, long look at their hearts...and determine which master they are really serving. |
