Fantastic Writing Contest for Teens!

I came across a blog entry on Reviews by Heidi, and it included a wonderful opportunity for all teen writers! The winner gets their book published. Can you believe that? They are asked to write a book for 'Tween' (middle-grade, the reading level of my Circle C Adventures). Go to Heidi's to read more about it, or click the graphic below to go to this wonderful site:

Here is the book that won last year, and a picture of the Teen Author! Spread this around HSB. From experience, I know the caliber of the writers here.

Is this a great idea or what?

Brought to you by SoCalVal's Weblink Wednesday.

Val's New Site!

Click the graphic for more Weblink Wednesdays!

Val has a new website--just for homeschool moms! Here's a brief "take a look":

No more guessing if a site is for teachers only,
No more wondering what a particular website offers,
No more guessing if the material you're viewing is free or not,
And no more jumping around from site to site to find something you need...

It's all done for YOU - by Homeschool Moms, like YOU.
All Weblinks are Mom tested and Mom approved!
After one year of collecting "mom tested" weblinks, this site is finally done and ready for debut... come on by and take a look. Here is what you'll find on the website...
  • Educational Links
  • Parent/Teacher Resource Lists
  • Unit Study Help

Take the Challenge!

Val is doing Weblink Wednesday over at her blog. Click the graphic to check out some great websites!
My Weblink Wednesday is a little unusual. Life of Faith is having a great challenge over at her blog: trying to go a whole week without using electronics for entertainment. Click on the graphic below to go to her blog and find out all the details. I'm sure it's not too late to add your name to the challenge. Can it be done? Try it and see!

An honest disclaimer needs to be written here: I told Alyssa I would love to "spread the word" although I cannot participate in the challenge this week, due to my hectic schedule as I not only prepare for a week-long young authors conference next week but also complete 2 proofreading jobs. My brain being mush at the end of the day, I confess that sitting down to watch an old Stargate SG-1 episode disqualifies me from joining this challenge. I will not commit to anything that I don't think I can "keep." Maybe another time....

Answers in Genesis

Val is hosting Weblink Wednesday. Go check it out!

I recently received my first issue of an incredible magazine called Answers in Genesis. Inside is also a pull-out for the kids. But...the great thing is Answers in Genesis has a website, where you can explore answers to questions about creation, our earth, and more.Click here:
 ANSWERS IN GENESIS.

There is a "Kids" link, and it is colorful and full of activities: Click here:
KIDS ANSWERS IN GENESIS.
A "Jurassic Park Mystery" video preview and the entire Dangerous Journey animated showing of Pilgrim's Progress. There are dot-to-dots, interesting animal facts with great pictures, make-your-own bookmarks, and more.

Here is the image of the video for the Jurassic Park Mystery. It was a fun "mini-lesson" on dinosaurs.

A Goldmine of Inexpensive Books

It's Weblink Wednesday with Valerie over at SoCalVal.
She's asking about holiday links, but alas, I do not have one for today. Actually, I have a fantastic website link for homeschoolers looking for inexpensive ways to purchase books. Maybe I'm behind the times, but have you heard of the Library & Educational Services website and catalog? I'd never heard of them before a year or two ago. A homeschooling friend called me up and told me my book was in their print catalog. Since then, the next book in the series has been added, and I can't believe how cheap they are! One time they offered both books in the set for the same price as buying ONE book anyplace else. One book on L&E is $4.81. How do they do that????
Well, I started looking through their catalog and found that ALL of their educational books and fiction books are so cheap! Why? Because you have to be a school or library to get this "library" discount.
Not to worry! Homeschoolers count. We are a "school" and can get these very same discounts. I ordered some books from L & E, and they came quickly. What a find!
If you go to this link: Library and Educational Services, you can sign up and get into their site to browse all the great titles: educational books, fiction, etc. and most of it from Christian publishers. You can also sign up for their print catalog, which looks like a CBD catalog, only the prices are better, since CBD sells to the general population.
So...check it out!

Weblink Wednesday for Writers

My first Weblink Wednesday. Hosted by SoCalVal. Links for all kinds of cool stuff to do and learn. Just click on the "Weblink Wednesday" graphic above and join the fun.

My Weblink Wednesday is a link to my FREE Reach for the Stars Writing Workshop for kids of all ages at my writing blog, Suzy's Writing Corner. This week I've posted Lesson 3, but the previous lessons are easy to click and find. The beauty of this site is the fact that you can read the blog entry, download the free, colored worksheets, and do your own thing....or you can sign Mr. Linky after completing each lesson and get feedback from yours truly (me).
If you complete the entire 17 weeks, I will send you a certificate of completion to keep in your student's portfolio.
Why am I sharing this? Because I know writing is sometimes difficult to teach in a homeschool setting, yet it is such an important skill.
Have fun!
