Less-Stress Academics

Less-Stress Academically

Grade levels: This is something the ps has devised to give the public classroom a focus.  If they are doing the work and learning, then they ARE at grade level.  Whatever you have deemed that to be.  No college or future employer is going to ask your child “did you learn to read by the time you were 6?” or “did you learn your multiplication tables in 3rd grade?”  Your dc will know this by THEN and that’s all that’s important!

Testing:  Wow, now here’s a touchy subject!  If you feel you want to see how your children are doing ‘according to the norm’ (whatever that may be) then you may purchase easy to use test booklets at a school supply store.  Or if you want a standardized test, then BJU has some here; and the CAT test is available to purchase here.  Most umbrella schools and some states require annual testing.

One on one: You know, teaching your child yourself is like having a private tutor for him/her.  You know that’s the best way to learn anyway.  Don’t stress about this ‘is he/she at grade level’ too much.  You know they are learning!

Do not compare! 2 Corinthians 10:12 “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”  Each child is different, each style of teaching/learning is different.  Thou shalt not compare!

Okay, less-stress over academics.  Let’s enjoy our children and let them learn when they are ready!

I run into problems with that comparing thing. I tend to be very competitive. I keep fighting it though! We use the CAT and love it! You are right, bottom line is that the children learn and enjoy it, not that they learn at some fabricated time. God bless! And keep me posted on the light bill!

April 1, 2006 - Hi

I just found your site way of Redeemed. Thank you SO much for taking the time to put all this out here for us to glean from. What a great idea and ministry to us homeschool moms.

I tend to be a 'less stress' homeschool mom but we are getting ready to enter into the high school realm and my main goal is to just be able to follow God's plan for my daughter and be above reproach from any doubters or goverment requirments.

I look forward to investigating your site even more!!

Thanks and God Bless!

April 1, 2006 - one more thing

Posted by ClagettsFLStyle
I have never 'tested' my daughters of eve. I really don't care what the 'world' considers as normal.. we're aliens here right?... but this year I decided to just try it out. A group of friends of mine are joining together to give our children the Iowa test (think that's what it's called). I just got the books from BJU for pretesting practice.
I don't want my girls stressed out over this, BUT.. never having to REALLY take a serious test before I think should be done.. I don't know if God's plan for them is college (i know that's so agains the grain.. but hey.. that's me ;-)... but I do want them to get an idea of what it's like in case they do want to attend. So we will see.. they take them at the end of April.. here's praying it will go well!!

April 2, 2006 - stress and dogwoods

Posted by Jimmie
Hi! I'm all about less stress! Thanks for the good tips. Those are things we know, but need to be reminded of.

LOVE THE DOGWOODS! I miss those trees so much over here. As goofy as it is, my girl scout camp counselor name was Dogwood. (We all had nicknames to keep the kids from knowing our real names... don't know why.) Then it turns out I'm born in the year of the DOG, I guess it's appropriate.

Thanks for making me a friend. I've done the same. Look forward to reading your posts regularly.

My Purpose

“My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col. 2:2,3)
