TV Turnoff week - 2006
April 24 - 30, 2006 Television cuts into family time, harms our children's ability to read and succeed in school, and contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity. Here are just a few of the facts: - On average, children in the US will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).
- Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.
- As US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said at the Kick Off of TV-Turnoff Week 2001, "We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in American history...This week is about saving lives."
Read more about that at TV Turnoff network
A good book about this same subject is The Electronic Milestone:Christian Parenting in a Media Age Author : Philip Patterson ISBN : 0899004202
Our family turned off the TV during TV Turnoff Week in 1995; we have not turned it back on since. So this week we will be honoring TV Turnoff Week by allowing no computer games, videos or computer time. That goes for me too. I will not be posting, or reading the blogs this coming week. I will check the email everyday in case someone would need to contact me. I will be spending more time with my family. ~Betsy

April 28, 2006 - T.V.
Not having a "t.v." has been one of the best decisions my husband and I agreed on ever! We use our tube for movies we carefully pick. Even with "carefully" picking these movies - we still have gotten some unbelievable junk.
Anyway, I do like educational shows, but weighing it out - I'm glad we did what we did. I'm not saying t.v. is all bad and of course I have no problem with others who have them - I just know for US it has been a blessing to not have one.
