I'm just wondering how you celebrate ADVENT in your home throughout December. Do you do something daily? weekly? or not even really acknowledge it? I'm just looking for some ideas - we'd like to start some new traditions in our home while the children are still young :)

I only just stumbled across this website, and you may already know about it - so sorry if this is an unnecessary comment! - but I've really liked some of the ideas I've been reading here.

This is perfect timing because we just had our Family Nite Advent activity at church tonight. Each family made an Advent wreath and we talked about the meaning of each part of it. We also sent each family home with a devotional/activity book for each day in Advent. We are going to really try to do them every day. I am sure that you could find some devotionals on-line if you look.
Our family usually kicks-off the "un-official" start of Advent the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We get the house all decorated, get a preview of the Christmas cookies, drink hot cocoa, light all the candles in the house and read the Christmas story from Luke. It has definitely become our favorite holiday tradition.
I think the main point of Advent is to prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of our Savior and to be focused on Him.
Your avatar caught my eye on your comment on my blog. I love to knit and thought your avatar was great!

We started it last year...

...and ,God-willing, will ALWAYS celebrate ADVENT daily during the season.
We celebrate it nightly with candle-lighting, a Bible Story and devotion, a round circle prayer time where everyone thanks God for a different blessing each night, and a song. We rotate each night who, of the children, get to blow out the candles and pick the song we sing.
Last year, my children were 4,3,2, and 1 and they would all sit so still and listen to the devotion. They looked forward to ADVENT every day and made for such a sweet progression to the celebration of Christ's birth. In February, my oldest gave her life to Christ and prayed the sweetest prayer (all in her own words) that I have ever heard. I said then and I believe now that our advent devotions played a big part in her hearing the Holy Spirit's knocking on her heart.
Have fun!
BTW- We were really broke last year, so I bought candles and a plain glass holder at Wal-mart for under $4 total. I downloaded a free devotional from Focus on the Family.

Thanks for you comments. I hope you like the Advent Calendar link and secret angels. When your children are a little older, you might enjoy the Jotham Journey Trilogy. There is a hair-raising, hard to put the book down, reading each night of advent, all pointing to the birth of Christ. They are awesome but definately for a bit older. My youngest was 5 last year and got a jittery in some scarey parts. I hightly recommend them though.
I see you also do in-home daycare. I do this too. I watch 2-3 in addition to my 3 whom I school. It sure keeps things hopping, doesn't it?
Blessed Christmas.

As to advent, we usually just go to the weekly advent service at church and any other activities the church may have going on during advent. This year is a little crazy, since we just moved and still haven't really settled in and gotten onto any thing resembling a normal schedule.

Thankful with you that your pregnancy is going well. I'm amazed how quickly time flies when you aren't the one carrying the baby :).
I recently posted some links and information about advent.
The box car races looked wonderful.
Blessings and friendship,

Yes, we celebrate advent! My husband made a homemade advent calendar out of wood with little wooden drawers for each day. We put a Christmas hymn on a little slip of paper and a little treat into each drawer. Each morning we open the drawer, sing the hymn, and then get the treat. Some of the treats are animal crackers, some are fruit snacks and a few are Hershey kisses! :)

Hi Sweetie, (couldn't resist that), I do covet your prayer, thank you. I'm so glad you stopped by. I just clicked right on over and have been enjoying reading through some of your posts. Your children are adorable. And congradulations on the next soon-to-be-member of your beautiful family. I'm adding you to my friends so I can visit often. :)
Hugs

We celebrate Advent by making a Jesse tree.
Every day we have a devotion, and the kids make a new ornament to hang on the tree.
( If you want to see a sample of it, I have photos on my own blog)
Blessings,
