A challenge and a reminderAt ladies Bible study this morning we discussed "service". We serve our families every day, but do we teach our children to serve - or to notice needs? In general, North American kids have a "What are you going to do for me" attitude. They are used to being catered to, having people do things for them, and having the world "revolve around them". As Christian parents it is our challenge to teach our children to serve others, not just to be served. Everywhere Jesus went, He served others, helped others, and cared about the needs of others both physically and spiritually. Being only self-aware, or self-focused is natural and easy. Being Christ-like takes effort and persistance. Service always costs something. Time, energy, material, possessions, reputation or effort - there is always a cost. We make excuses when we see needs or when we hear about them "I don't have the time" or "I don't have the resources", or "it costs too much".... Our children pick up our excuses, and mimic what they hear. What kind of examples have we set for our own children? We were challenged to help our children find a ways for each child to serve others over the Christmas season. We were challenged to help THEM see a need, and learn how they could help fill it. From making cards and pictures for those alone this holiday, to helping at the food bank, baking, opening doors for people, shovelling snow, or cleaning up the pews after a church service.... with a little creativity there are many things that little hands can do! I am looking forward to sitting with my children tomorrow and discussing this. I look forward to hearing what ideas they come up with!
