Rachel's Ramblings

Back to School

We started back to school last Monday after a two week break for Christmas festivities.... and it has been SUCH a fight!  Nothing seemed to motivate my son to do his work effectively.  Today, however, after 6 days of struggling...  he suddenly seemed to come around!  School work was done well and without complaining today - what a relief to me, and I was able to catch up a bit on some housework.  (Folded 13 loads of wash today - Mrs. Hardwick would be so proud!)

I was able to go to Ladies Bible study this morning.  We are doing a video series on the topic "Lies Women Believe".  I think it's going to be a great study!  I am always encouraged by the fellowship.

I am always tempted to not take long breaks during the school year because it is so hard to get everyone, including me, back into the routine. Thankfully this year we have fallen back in quite nicely. You made some really great Christmas presents by the way. I wish I were talented in sewing and knitting. Maybe one of these days...

Getting back to work

I am glad to hear that your finally getting things done. Is his desk still in the kitchen?? Do you actually leave them alone to do their work??
This seems to strange to me. I am sitting at the table with them the whole time we home school. I always found that if I leave the table, then the kids don't stay focused. I can write in my own journal, or plan menus, but if it is even change a load of laundry, I risk losing them.

Yes, his desk remains in the kitchen. Since I tend to spend a lot of time in our small kitchen as it is, it means I am able to make meals, clean up, and do other things while helping with his work. And, YES I do leave him with assignments and go work on something else for brief periods of time, since he is in Grade two he does need to begin learning some independant work habits... the biggest problem with him working in the dining room at the table was distraction - from his sister. SHE now sits at the dining room table - and I do stay with her while she works, as she's still young and pretty dependant on me for direction. That said, the laundry was folded after school was done, not during school - that might have been confusing in the post, sorry about that :)
