Fish in My Hair

"Auburn." The box clearly said, "Auburn."

On Friday, having decided that the skunk-in-negative look (blonde with a dark brown stripe) wasn't working for me, I decided to color my hair a lovely shade of auburn.

The look I was going for: Warm, sassy, Vail snowbunny.

The look I got: Angry, doped-out, trailer park punk rocker.

Yeah. I had pink hair. And to make matters worse, I didn't get all the hair colored, so I had pink, blonde, brown, and grey hair. I looked like a mutant peacock/flamingo hybrid.

So yesterday I dashed back into StuffMart to purchase a couple of boxes of dark brown haircolor, praying desperately that I wouldn't run into anyone I knew. I entered the appropriate aisle, where an unfamiliar lady stood perusing the shelves with her teenage daughter. You know things are bad when a strange woman with a mullet the color of Ronald McDonald's hair glances at you and says, sympathetically, "Oh, honey."

Last night, I re-dyed my hair.

The look I was going for: A normal middle-aged woman.

The look I got: A middle aged woman who obviously should leave hair coloring to the professionals.

The ends are dark brown. The roots are auburn. SIGH.

May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be anything but pink.

TC

Just had to say that! LOL

Reminds me of a couple years ago when I did the exact same thing. O me O my! I haven't coloured my hair since.

When I think of wishing for you that you are "in the pink", that's not what I had in mind. I hope this coming year brings you renewed health and happiness.

I live in fear of doing the same thing! One time my Mom ended up with Ronald McDonald hair. You think the fear would keep me from doing my own --- but the budget rules me on this. May your hair be merry and bright!

My mom did it too...

My parents came up for Christmas and as soon as I saw her I said "Mom, your hair is orange!", she had done it herself. She has always colored her hair all by herself and this has not happened before. I guess when you get so many "natural highlights" (that's what I like to call mine) you need to leave it to the experts. I have learned from you both! Were you able to fix yours?

TC,
You are right in style here in S. California, girl! We went to Chillies last night and our waitress had brown hair with a thick streak of bright pink. The other waitress had bleach blonde hair on top with black underneath. Another waitress had dark brown hair with streaks of "white" all in it! I looked around at the clientelle and realized that we were just about the only people whose hair was all one color!

Of course, I color mine auburn too! In a just a few weeks I will fit right in too. Red hair with grey streaks and dark roots!

...Surely you have some. If your teenagers are anything like mine, they wouldn't let you get away w/o recording this series of events for posterity and decades of laughs.

My d16 has the opposite problem- she has TRIED to dye her hair garish colors (pink, purple), and it has always come out such a lovely auburn that even the most conservative adults compliment her on it- not exactly her desired objective. Now she sticks w/jet black, but even that tends to fade quickly. Her hair is currently a lovely auburn and I'm not complaining.

Too funny

I have the Normal Mom color covering my grey, but one day I spilled the hair color on the bathroom door and it took the paint off. I always thought of myself as low-maintenence and not vain, but when I saw that the dye removes paint and I still poured it on my scalp, I reevaluated my self-perception. I'm vain and I want hazelnut color hair.

May your 2007 be as colorful as your hair.

What a nightmare! I had a friend of mine call me on the phone crying one time, because she had her hair dyed blonde..but her family all agreed it was balloon yellow. Hope it all gets worked out for ya!

I'm told Kool-Aid makes a delightful but very temporary hair coloring experience

How do you make such tragical events sound comical? On the "bright" side, at least you have hair to dye *and* that hideous color should eventually fade.
Aren't you glad eternity presents us with the prospect of a whole new body? Maybe God will let you special order loads of lovely, auburn hair.

Billy Idol was so yesterday

I was going on a trip to see family in Minnesota when I had a very similar situation. Thank goodness my girlfriend was a hairdresser and made the emergency fix. I am not kidding, Snow-white on an already dirty blonde. e-gadds it was scary. Your smart to laugh with it. We have all done stuff like this.
