Fish in My Hair

I should have had a Red Bull beforehand.

I have finally discovered an experience that is worse than trying on jeans. It’s helping your teenage daughter try on jeans.

You wouldn’t think that this would be too hard to fit.

But being in a dressing room with this child sanctified me as much, or more than, infertility, cancer, and the near-death of Husband a few years ago, combined.

I have to admit it was partly my fault. I was the one who naively suggested we go shopping. Due to my ongoing weight loss, and Princess BunHead’s need of some clothes, we headed out for The Gap, where I’ve always had success in finding great-fitting jeans.

We sashayed to the back of the store, where the shelves held jeans piled higher than my boys’ sock-and-underwear compost heap. It was a veritable smorgasbord of denim. This splendid array would ultimately prove to be my undoing.

You see, The Gap has an assortment of cuts of jeans, with names like “Classic,” “Long and Lean,” “Curvy,” and “Better Start Laying Off the Nutter Butters.” Within in each of those categories, there are numerous lengths, waist fits, colors, washes, and fabrics. Using a complicated mathematical formula – which I will not explain here, because a) it would take too much time, and, b) I don’t know it – one soon learns that there are 3, 509 possible combinations of features in Gap jeans.

Well. In my ignorance, I pulled two pairs of jeans off the shelves for myself, and two more for Princess BH. We found our way into the dressing room area, and things went rapidly downhill from there.

One of my two pairs fit perfectly. I figured we’d be checking out in less than ten minutes. I called over Princess BH’s cubicle door, “How are they?” She growled back, “Too small.” “Oh, don’t worry,” said I. “I’ll go out and get a few more pairs in a different size and style.”

The growl intensified with every pair of jeans. “Too short.” “Too long.” “Too baggy.” “Too tight in the waist.” “Too dark.” “Too light.” “Too straight.” “Too blue.” (Too BLUE?) I sat down on a bench near the mirrors.

On my 16th trip out of the dressing room, a sweet salesgirl took pity on me and started helping by carrying armloads of jeans into Princess BH. Thirty minutes later, I was lying on the bench as Princess BH cried, “I’m shaped like a troll!” The salesgirl, who was about as big as the handle on my refrigerator, wisely left the dressing room, and went to get advice from the store manager, which is never a good thing.

Another thirty minutes later, I was actually prone on the floor of the neighboring cubicle, alternately praying for the rapture to happen right then and there, and having hallucinations about hamsters in tiny Gap denim skirts. The salesgirl brought in the last two pairs of jeans in the entire store.

I’m happy to report that God is merciful. The very last pair fit in all the right places. The salesgirl revived me by mentioning they were having a sale on khakis so we quickly headed to the cash register, where I was charged the equivalent of our monthly mortgage payment. I almost needed to lie down again.

Swimsuit season is coming up. I’m going to need a barrel of Advil.

Oh, and for Princess BunHead's version this event, which she calls "an epic tale of tragedy," go here.

That is also my favorite jean place. I've discovered in the recent years the same problem with all the choices& the prices. Yikes....I feel your pain!

I've always said...

...that children were man's revenge on woman.

Now you know what a guy feels like on every single typical "mall run" that his wife asks him to go on.

Every. Single. Time.

I feel your pain :) We went through this a few weeks ago. I think dd tried every pair of jeans on in the Aeropostale store with no success. We headed over to American Eagle which of course didn't take long to find a pair that fit because they were NOT having a sale. So I figured out we can find what we need for full price, but sale prices do not fit dd:)

TC, seriously, why are you not a nationally syndicated columnist???? Either I start seeing your funny posts in the paper or I'm going to send in your posts with my name on them and make a little moula. You have an ability to put our common experiences in perfect humor and words. Send this one in somewhere. Or I will. Can I? I need the money to buy my daughters some jeans.

too funny

my 8 year old son is the same way. trying on jeans with him is horrible. i hate it. we travel from store to store as i hear...i don't like those things in the waist (that nifty thing that is supposed to make jeans fit any size waist), too big, they hurt my "thingie", i don't like the way they touch my feet. Then in a fit that would impress the homest of homesteaders we leave the store arms and legs usually flailing.....ugh!

i thought i hit the jack pot this year at Stuffmart when we found Wrangler jeans with an elastic waist and no "elastic thingie in the inside of the waist". seems as if i bought the very last 2 pair EVER.

guess next year we'll be doing the same thing from store to store to store. my kids are built like bean poles so we'll definitely avoid the husky section.

you have a beautiful daughter. and her new jeans are great.

You've done a great job with the visual picture of your shopping expedition. I have no daughters, so won't ever get this pleasure. Thanks for helping me live it through you!

You have made my day....and I agree, you need to go columnist big. My little bunhead is almost 12 and tall, lean, all legs, no waist and I can't find jeans to fit her anywhere. Usually thrift stores are a best bet, but in a few years that won't be acceptable either. Thank you for sharing, I now must go read PB's version.....

Haha! It is so true! I hate shopping with my mom and I have to admit I emit those dressing room growls!

Ah, the frightening world of Junior Fashions

At least clothes shopping for teenage daughters is a little better than it was a few years ago. Remember those not-so-long-ago days when it was well nigh to impossible to find pants and tops that even came anywhere close to meeting in the middle?

Actually I consider myself and my wallet very lucky, bc my daughter's favorite clothing store is.... Goodwill!

If it helps any I remember doing this to my dad once.

Only it was at the mall and we had to go from store to store trying to find a good fit. In my defense, GAP wasn't there yet- don't tell anyone I am that old, though. LOL!

Eh, forget the Red Bull - go for a six-pack of Valium for teen-jean-shopping.

Oh My sides ache!

As I am reading this my mind goes back to a time when I was 15 years old reading Old Hat New Hat by the Berenstain Bears to my two year old sister....Too Bumpy, too Lumpy, Too Frilly, Too Silly!
I can hear your swimsuits now, This is cut to high, This is way too low. This one has no bottom this one has no top. The stipes are to wide these are to narrow. And isn't a yellow Polka-dot Bikini a suit with yellow polka-dots not a yellow suit with polka dots?
Because of Jesus, Bobbie

As I was reading your post I realized it sounded very familiar. I stumbled across your daughters entry quite by accident not realizing the two of you were related. I should have because her post was just as funny. My daughter is only 7 so I'm sure I'll need to save your posts as I'm not as likely to see the humor in the situation and certainly the record will be more of exasperation.
