• Jan. 16, 2008 - News from Lorrie~
You know how one thing leads to another. That is happening in my home this week. I decided to move my dresser out of my bedroom. That required I find some new homes for things. No problem. I moved the hair bows, the girls don't need me to pick for them anymore. To put the hair bows in the back hall closet I had to move the birthday gifts. I decided the best place for them was in the storage room . . . Four closets later the things from my dresser are put away and my house looks like more than one tornado hit it!
This made me think of sin. While the children and I were running things back and forth to their new homes I talked to them about how a little thing I set out to do - I only wanted to put away some things - had grown to the point of disrupting our lives in nearly every room of our house. This is like sin. It starts so small we think it won't really matter. We think we can use a bad word just once and then never say it again, we are just like Eve. We don't want to believe that one little mistake can have big repercussions. Yet, one bite of the apple is disobedience and the fact is, the result of sin is far-reaching and long-lasting.

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR MOMS
with Lorrie Flem talking about Attitudes
Thursday Night Oct 18, 2007 - 9:00 PM EDT
Contact Information Below
==========================================
Dear Friends,
Judging by the overwhelming number of people who took time to post at my blog this week about phone seminars, I know that tonight’s topic on Attitudes with Lorrie Flem is perfectly timed.
Here is a sampling of just a few of the comments that have been posted:
Dear Marilyn,
“I loved Lorrie’s last phone seminar. She has a gentle way of guiding and encouraging moms and I learned a lot from her. Thanks Marilyn for providing us with so many opportunities for support and encouragement.”
Dear Marilyn,
“ I loved Lorrie's last phone seminar and can't wait for the one coming up this Thursday.”
Dear Marilyn,
“You bet attitude is everything and I appreciate your teleseminars to help with mine! Although, I have to keep my attitude in check when I don't dial into one early enough & miss out! It is very disappointing!”
Dear Marilyn,
“The timing of this phone seminar is so encouraging for me. In my last two times with the Lord he has been showing me how I need to grow in training my own mind and my children, even specifically their attitudes. I've never attended a seminar before and am really looking forward to it!”
Dear Marilyn,
“Thank you so much for offering free phone seminars. Attending a seminar in real life seems nearly impossible at the moment so it's wonderful to be able to listen in to a FREE teleconference while at home.”
Lorrie has said, "Training our children's attitude is how we teach our children to learn to obey God cheerfully, and then we will be happy." We will be talking about how she first became interested in this topic of attitudes and why attitudes matter so much.
If you know Lorrie, she is an expert in practical topics and will be giving us examples from the Bible where attitudes worked for good and for evil.
Most importantly, we will brainstorm practical ways to get out of bad attitudes and, of course, take time for audience questions. If you would like to ask Lorrie a question, please email your questions to marilyn@urbanhomemaker.com
Attitudes Seminar Download Information:
If you would like to listen to the seminar with Lorrie but the timing of tonight’s seminar does not fit into your schedule, you may listen to an MP3 recording of this seminar by CLICKING HERE.

• Jul. 9, 2007 - What is a Family?
In today's world it is not always easy to keep our definition of a family
the same as God's. We are bombarded with the idea that what "they" do and
believe is their business. And as long as they leave us alone we won't fuss
at them.
I cry "Nay!" Let me lay it out very simply. God views the family as a whole
unit. The world wants us to believe a family is a group of individuals who
happen to live together - for now.
Let's look at how we know how God defines a family. Even though it was Eve
who ate from Satan's apple the ultimate responsibility for this sin was
Adam's. Also, biblically it is fathers who can covenant for the entire
family and break a covenant for the entire family.
Traditionally it was obvious that this definition of a family was what
society held. When the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence
were signed it was men who affixed their signatures as heads of households.
At that time the U.S. was commonly viewed as a compilation of families under
the headship of God-appointed men, or fathers.
For centuries when a Christian father signed a covenant or voted, he held
one vote for his entire family. Today people worry that this leaves out
women and children.
But the real question is do you believe God's definition
of a family or the worlds? Is a family a group of single individuals or is
it a single unit? Is our family a group of single individuals or are we a
God-ordained team who recognizes the father as the head?
God designed three institutions: state, church, and family. The state is to
have the power to enforce the law and see that justice is served upon those
who break it. The church is to teach the Word of God and bring discipline on
those who break God's laws. The family can do none of these. The family's
responsibility is exclusive. It has the responsibility of training and
governing it's own affairs according to the Word of God.
Each of these three institutions are to be independent but all are to be
held to a higher law, the law of God. This is what our founding fathers
believed when they set up the United States Government, shared
accountability under the law of God. This is a family.

Dear Friends,
You may have already known that my dear Mom, Nancy Nolan, has been battling cancer for quite awhile now. We have had many triumphs and trials through this and we are now spending much time with her as her health is failing very quickly. Would you please keep us all in prayer? Thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart,

4 Homekeeping Skills Every Girl (and Boy) Should Know
|
|
Mrs. Lorrie Flem
Copyright 2007 TEACHmagazine.com
There are just some skills that every girl needs to know in order to run her own (or help you with yours!) home. These are some of the first I made sure my 3 girls knew.
1. Salad making
We eat a salad as a part of dinner nearly every night. It is truly a help to me if others can keep this fresh and filled. I teach them how to wash and cut leaf lettuce and spinach with a table knife. I make sure they understand which vegtables are to be peeled, and seeded, and how I like them cut for the salad. I enjoy teaching them that we make a salad look delicious by using a variety of colors. When they get to wear their own sweet little apron it makes salad making even more fun.
2. Running a load of laundry
In my home a "load of laundry" encompasses all the steps to get one load out and a new one in. I make sure they know how to fold, and put away the clean clothes from the dryer. I also show them how to properly sort the clothes, appropriately use soap and treat dirty spots, and run and empty the clothes from the machine and into the dryer. That is a "load" of laundry - one load out and put away and a new one drying and washing.
3. Serving tea
My children learn how to make a cup of tea when they are about 4 years old. This might have something to do with the fact that nearly every morning you will find me consuming a couple of cups. I want them to know how to serve it from using an appropriate cup all the way to asking them if they would like their cup freshened. You can reward them with their own special china tea set too.
4. Cleaning up the kitchen
I like them to understand that if they use the kitchen for preparing food and eating that after they are done I don't want mself or Sherlock Holmes to be able to tell they have been there. I teach them that this is "clean."
Make sure your children know these things. It will be a blessing to you now, and to them for the rest of their lives!

• May. 31, 2007 - Need some more encouragement??
| Dear Ladies,
I want to send a heartfelt thank you to each of you who has purchased from our Baker's Dozen Bundle Sale, What an encouragement to us. And do you know what?
You are going to get what you are giving us - I know that after you get your bundles encouragement is what you will receive too!
One thing I began doing recently is to pray using Proverbs 31 as my model. I am so excited to share this idea with you! Go through verse by verse and make that a part of your praying for each day. Since there are 31 verses in this chapter it works out nicely.
Let me give you an example. The first verse starts by telling us these are, “The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him.” So I pray for my mom and for the Lord to help me remember and to learn from what she taught me.
I hope that idea inspires you like it did me! Again, don’t forget – there are only days left to purchase bundles (everything I have written to help you deal with a specific topic) at an incredible savings and get a bundle of goodies to go with them!
Don’t miss out!
Happily Serving Him,
13 Easy Things to Make Your Day More Productive
|
|
Mrs. Lorrie Flem
1. Train their hearts first. It is much easier to teach your children to obey than to willingly obey. Yet willing obedience is what God wants from us and wants us to teach our children. It is vital that you know what to do, when to do it, and exactly how to do it.
2. Make your husband the priest of your home. Next to your relationship with the Lord there is no other relationship more important than the one you have with your husband. Make this a top priority and be sure that you know the one thing God says men need. You can't be the best wife without knowing this.
3. Be committed to homeschooling. Satan is the master murderer. He does everything he can to divert, damage, decieve, and destroy. Don't be unarmed. He doesn't want you to be successful at homeschooling. He is after you. Ensure that you are prepared for what he is going to throw at you by knowing what he is going to do before he does it.
4. Train your children to obey. If your children do not obey you completely the first time you tell them to do something then they are not obeying. Knowing the definition for true obedience and how to teach your children that this is what you require.
Stay tuned … the next email newsletter will have some more!
Psss. Notice that we have a bundle to go along with each of these 4 things: character training, marriage, homeschooling, and child training.
Be sure and check them all out here:

Lorrie Flem
Dear TEACH Friends,
Last Monday around 11 p.m. my sister called and said they were on the way to the hospital with my niece McKenna who had been severely bitten in the face by a dog. She called again an hour later and said the hospital was not able to treat her and they were on their way to a larger hospital 45 minutes away. Another hour went by and my sister called to say they were being transported by ambulance to another hospital 3 hours away. Right now I'm at the hospital with my sister and her family and my niece has just gotten out of surgery. We would treasure your prayers for my niece McKenna for complete healing and for wisdom for her Drs. and therapists.
Tuesday morning we had a scheduled teleseminar, something we haven't done in over a year. In spite of my anxiousness to be with my sister and her family we persevered and were blessed to have all 100 lines full. We were able to record the session "The Early Bird Gets The Worm". The CD of this wonderful session will be available to purchase in the next week and a half.
Tuesday's session had a baker's dozen worth of tips and ideas that have helped me through the years to get my days off to a good start. Something I learned years ago, is that it is much easier to have a successful day at home with just a little planning on mom's part.
Happily Serving Him,
Lorrie
P.S. Very soon we'll be announcing a much anticipated spectacular sale.

No Kitchen Maid? Here's Some Kitchen Aid
|
|
Bulk Ground Beef Cooking
I found a time saving way to cook large amounts of hamburger that works wonderfully. I put a 5 pound chunk into my crock pot and set it on high. Just give it a stir every 30 to 60 minutes to ensure it breaks up nicely and stays moist. After about 3 hours drain it in a colander and package in one pound freezer bags. To thaw I put the frozen chunk into a colander again and pour hot water over it. I get moist, low fat hamburger that is thawed and ready to go in no time.

Date Your Mate
|
| It doesn't take long after you've been married to find out that marriage is wonderful but romance might not be an everyday occurance. But it can be and it doesn't have to be expensive.
Think outside the box of roses and dinners out. With a little creativity and a playful attitude even simple dandelions can become a romantic bouquet.
Giving him a gift. It doesn't have to be a big deal. It just takes a little time and a wee bit of thought to woo your spouse.
Little gifts, whether purchased or made, are like spring in the air after a long, cold winter. When was the last time you gave one?

You've heard of the "3 R's", the most important things for students to learn.
Well, after nearly 20 years of homeschooling I am convinced that it is vital for homeschool moms to know what their "R's" are. As I prayed and thought this over it was clear to me that there are 5 areas that every homeschool mom needs to identify and establish.
These 5 areas are foundational. If they are each strong and solid you can build upon it.
- Build in yourself a relationship with Him. A relationship that is firmly rooted in and totally reliant upon God Almighty living in you.
- Build a marriage that will stand the test of time and storms of life.
- Build a home where the Lord reigns and your family and others are nourished by visiting.
- Build up and raise Godly children who plant and grow their own seeds. Build a relationship with God.
- Build a habit that will fill you up to overflowing. Discover what real rest is, why you must have it, where to find it, an how to get, it.
I will share all this with you and so much more.
Be refreshed, rekindled, refined, rejuvenated, and rested.
You won't be disappointed.
Under the Shadow of His Wings,
Lorrie
Here are 5 interviews you can download and listen to. These were recorded live with Cindy Rushton in December 2006/January 2007. They are SO uplifting! You will love them!

Session 4: Rejuvenate ~ What to do When Abel is Raising Cain
What do you do with the 2 year old? How do you cure whining? How do you love your children while training them at the same time?
Session 5: Rest ~ Give it Up and Get it All

like a good idea to you! Learn how to take care of you when you are a wife, mother, homekeeper, and homeschooler.
What is It Like???
Each session Lorrie and Cindy began by sharing a message on a topic complimentary to the day's study. Each message is worth the class, but that is still not all. Also included is a time of "chat and get to know" other likeminded
What others are saying about the 5 R's
. All I can say is WOW! I am encouraged, inspired and challenged to develop my relationship with God and to grow deeper in His word. This is just from session one, I am so excited to be participating in a study with moms across the country who are wanting to be the moms, wives, homeschool teachers, friends, etc. that God has created us to be. I just can't wait for the next 4 sessions!
. What a blessing to have a like-minded Momma who is several steps ahead of me on the journey reach back and give me a hand up. This session was true "Titus 2" ministry!
Thanks! Heather
. Get your house in order! WOW!!! The 5R's for the Homeschool Mom will really help you get your life together. Starting with our personal quiet time with the Lord. The first session really hit home and reinforced the importance of our time personally with God. I can't wait to hear the next sessions. They are sure to be God inspired!
. I want to thank you for doing this series. I so appreciated the topics covered and the sweet spirit of you both. All I can say is..."wow...ouch...oh Lord here I come!!!"

• Apr. 9, 2007 - What Listening Looks Like
|
"Mom, guess what?!"
"Mmm."
"Mooommm, guess what happened?"
"MMMmmm."
"I lost my tooth! I was just taking a drink of my water and it popped out into my water bottle!"
"Neat. Did you throw it away?"
This is how I sounded when my darling daughter experienced one of the most exciting things that can happen to a 6 year old. She lost her tooth and I had been too distracted to pay much attention. I instantly was remorseful and she did forgive me. But I found it harder to forgive myself.
When I was a girl I bought my Daddy a little wooden plaque that said, "The best gift a dad can give his children is to love their mother." I thought that saying was so true then and now as a mother, I appreciate its truth even more. Another truth I have learned, as a mother is that one of the most precious gifts a mother can give to her children is to truly listen to them.
Now that I have a young adult and 3 teens, I believe it is even more vital that a parent really listen to their children and that if this is something that you train yourself to be in the habit of early on in their lives, it will stand you in good stead over the years. As they get older you might find that they talk less, at least about the things you really want to hear about, like what they think and feel in their hearts. Develop a habit of intent listening when your children are young and communication will be easier as they get older.
Here is what I wish I had done when my daughter was excited to tell me about her tooth. This is exactly what I believe careful listening looks like:
The first three follow the firemen's saying of "Stop, Drop, and Roll."
Stop whatever you are doing.
Drop, or set down, whatever you are holding.
Roll, your eyes and body toward the speaker to let them know that you want to hear what they have to say.
Read your child's nonverbal communication. Sometimes it will tell you things that they won't say out loud. Do they look angry, sad, apprehensive, or happy?
Don't talk but make listening noises. Don't say anything. Just try to look like you want to listen. Do use noises that show you are listening, "I see," "Oh," and "Uh Huh."
Encourage them to open up more by asking questions or giving simple commands like, "How did that make you feel?" and "What happened next?" And listen behind the words for feelings that might not even be identified by your child, "You seem very excited about that!" or "I bet that made you angry."
Help them solve their problems as you feel like they need it. Always direct them to pray first by asking, "Have you prayed about this?" Then help them think about future actions by asking things like, "What do you want to happen next?" or "What do you think she feels like?" or "Did you say you were sorry for your part in this?" Don't try to come up with a solution but encourage them to think it through on their own. Look for biblical or personal illustrations that might point out how to achieve a good outcome. Remember, listening is what this is all about.
To wrap it all up in a nutshell, open your ears and shut your mouth.'

• Apr. 8, 2007 - Spring is Here!
Spring is here and it seems to be popping already! In a couple of weeks we leave for the New Mexico conference. I am looking forward to the 5 or 6 times they asked me to speak. Also, there with me is my friend, Little Bear Wheeler. I will enjoy seeing him and Marilyn again.
In May we have our first TEACH on the Beach this year. Right now it only has 2 spots left. There will be 28 of us relaxing and rejuvinating.
The Lord has used these weekends to impact lives in amazing ways! I bring myself to tears just thinking of some of the stories. Here is one:
"I came planning to divorce my husband the next month. I left with the truth ... of what I could do."
One year later she said, "I did the things that Lorrie shared with me and by the grace of God my husband responded. We recommitted our lives to the Lord and make our relationship a priority,
I wasn't left with a "retreat high" that fades away after a couple of days. With Lorrie's challenges and exhortation my family has survived and thrived."
You see, God is working through these beach retreats and I am honored and humbled to be a part.
Are you one of the two remaining people coming with us? There is still room for you.

• Apr. 8, 2007 - Happy Easter Sunday!
I love this little poem about Jesus. It reminds me of the truths and encourages me today.
Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.
Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.
Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.
Had no army, yet kings feared Him.
He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.
I always add to it: I am unfaithful and unloving yet He is always faithful, always loving.

• Mar. 27, 2007 - Who Has Time For Character Training?
|
An excerpt from brand new books by Mrs. Lorrie Flem
By the time we do reading, writing, and arithmetic it is time for bed. Who has time for all the other things we would love to include? What about science, keyboarding, history, thinking skills, and character training … you have got to be kidding! There’s simply too much to do in too little time.
I know I feel like this and I am sure some of you do too. I want to make time for the things that are truly eternally important and the things that my children need in order to be successful as adults. As a mother of 20, 17, and 15-year-old sons I am here to tell you that you ARE teaching character every day whether you do it proactively or reactively.
Teaching character reactively is what you do when you instinctively holler when the jar of honey gets broken open on the floor. Teaching character proactively is anticipating the need for us all to be ready with a proper response when the honey spills.
Of course, life happens. Honey spills, toilets overflow, water glasses get knocked over, dinners burn, accidents happen. Now take this a step further and realize that your children will be tempted by the master tempter. They will be tempted to steal, to lose their patience, to lie, to do less than their best, to cheat, to act in anger, etc.
So how can we fit in one more thing to our already over-packed day and make sure that we proactively teach them how to respond? How can we teach them how to make the right choices in a world working hard to convince them there is no such thing as right or wrong anymore?
Don’t add in another course if you already feel stretched. Instead slip it in painlessly with Lorrie’s newest books.
