Graduation
Today I would like to write something a bit more personal. May is the month of homeschool graduations and homeschool conferences. Last year, I graduated one of my children in a wonderful small homeschool ceremony with friends around us. This year, however, was something spectacular.
My daughter graduated from ORU in Tulsa. I must say that I have been to several college graduations, but ORU is the best. Our last graduation at ORU was 9 years ago when my oldest and her husband graduated together. And yet, the ceremony always surprises me.
At the hooding, the head of the department stood there for an hour to hug each student as they received their hood, which indicates their school, their degree, and their specialty. To see this woman hugging these students, giving small whispers as they pass, knowing each of these adults in their path to completion of their degree was awe inspiring. We talked with her later and she is truly a woman of inspiration to my daughter.
Today, we had all the pomp and circumstance as we stood while the deans filed into the auditorium, and then the professors in their various robes with indications of rank and specialty. Then as the graduates enter, they wave to family and friends in the auditorium. So the music stops, I stop talking to those around me and all of a sudden we are singing praises to the Lord. As in church, we sing rousing praise songs of thanksgiving and rejoicing as this is a day of celebration, a time to stop and say THANK YOU GOD FOR BRINGING US TO THIS POINT. Kleenexes abounded before it was over.
They were great to acknowledge that each degree was a group effort, by the students, the professors and the families who sacrificed and supported the student through the process. It was good to be acknowledged, but also to see at an auditorium of families who had also sacrificed to send their children to a Christian college.
And that is what I wanted to talk about. This graduation is different than others I have attended in that
the Lord God was acknowledged and thanked and praised with every step, every song, every speech. The university teaches the whole man: body, soul and spirit. Dr. Cooper's institute is in charge of the PE program which is required of all the students. They are taught logic and thinking skills as well as developed emotionally as they meet deadlines and standards of excellence. Finally, with chapel and required foundational courses in Christianity, their spirits are taught and matured.
The speaker was inspiring, the procession was quick and well organized, and my little girl with the curly hair is now finished with her degree. And none of that would have happened without Jesus in our lives.

My Time on the Mountain
With an unplanned turn of events, I find myself on a mountain in northern Alabama with a family of 13
children. My gracious hostess, Vanessa, puts up with my incapacitated rehab state, all the while
singing and smiling with her 12 of her 13 children round about her. One of the 13 is away in the Marines.
Although older and, I thought, wiser than this young mother of 13, I'm learning quiet a bit from this
wonderful family. Having the 13 was a walk of faith for them and I do call her blessed. Instead of living
in the city, her husband commutes an hour to Birmingham. The kids play in the field and woods, the
view is spectacular and their home pleasant.
Listening to their story of how God brought them together, and then talked with them about giving Him
control of their family instead of the normal family planning methods, it's awe inspiring. It was not easy,
but God came through with raises with the birth of each child, with provision from the community and with
blessings from places not expected.
This lifestyle really takes a bit of unselfishness. I have seen families who have hit their limit (their
selfless limit) and the Mom can't handle it. Her level of selflessness is at an end and either the kids are
farmed out, her appointments become more numerous as she finds *me* time or she turns it inward into
resentment of the children. All variations can be detrimental to a family.
Also, many times a father's faith in God's provision will give up before hitting more than 3 kids. Instead
of handing over the provision of the family to the Father of us all, a dad tries to carry the burden, works
more hours, resulting in less time with the kids and general unrest among the family. Working harder
does not insure success as noted in Proverbs, if God is not blessing you. Learning to hand over the
reigns in our life is the most important constant lesson in all our stages of growth.
To go forth and multiply really is a walk of faith and selflessness from both parents. To pour yourself
into children, day in and day out, without the breaks that even teachers with 20 kids obtain over the
weekends, can be taxing. But knowing where your source lays, and returning to that source each day
to be refilled is the only way to continue pouring yourself out to your children, whether you have 3 or 13.
From this family of 13, I see builders, medical people, artists, soldiers, debaters, lawyers, actors,
athletes, and other great talents. Will anyone outside this mountain know what work Vanessa did day
in and day out as she tended her garden of children? I hope so.
PS. I'm home now, recovering. Will have an updated list of Conferences soon. Enjoy the Bluebonnets! |

Google for Educators!
Aaalllrrrighty now! (ALA Bruce Almighty) so you are wondering what new rabbit you can pull out of your hat for lessons with the kiddos. Well, Google has now stepped into the education field. I will put the caveat that I have NOT reviewed any of this for world view, so look while the kids are asleep before you unveil it to them
Anyway, Google for Educators has lots of lesson plans, posters, activities, computer games and other tools for teaching the kids. I have not had time to check the world view or how PC everything is. If you get a chance to check it out, PLEASE leave a comment so others will know if it passes your *smell test*. |
