NASA Seed Project
Plant growth will be an important part of space exploration in the future as NASA plans for long-duration missions to the moon. NASA scientists anticipate that astronauts may be able to grow plants on the moon, and the plants could be used to supplement meals.
In anticipation of the need for research into lunar plant growth, NASA and the International Technology Education Association, or ITEA, present the NASA Engineering Design Challenge: Lunar Plant Growth Chamber for the 2007-2008 school year. Elementary, middle and high school students design, build and evaluate lunar plant growth chambers -- while engaging in research- and standards-based learning experiences. Students participate in the engineering design process and learn how to conduct a scientific experiment.
Choose from three ways to participate in the challenge:
1. Design, Build and Evaluate a Chamber
2. Design and Evaluate a Chamber
3. Evaluate a Chamber
Educators who complete the challenge with their students can request cinnamon basil seeds that have flown in space on the STS-118 space shuttle mission. Students can compare plants grown from both space-flown and Earth-based control seeds, and test the designs of the lunar plant growth chambers. The seeds will be available to the first 100,000 registrants who must be residents of the United States, U.S. Territories and Outlying Areas. Register early and check this page often!
+ Join the challenge
The registration was temporiarily closed but will open again after October 8th. This would be a great project for your 4H club or co-op. |

Texas State Fair
The Texas State Fair is the largest State Fair in the nation. It become famous with the movie State Fair staring Elivs. Our Big Tex talking statue was featured in the movie and became an icon on the Texas landscape.
But our fair is more than drama and corn dogs, it's an educational experience not to be missed by our kids. It's an experience, from the fried twinkies to the car show, the calf roping, and the many entries of home made items as in any fair. It's an American tradition that needs to be shared by our children so they will know how communities used to gather in the frontier days for the anticipated yearly fair.
The State Fair of Texas will give out free tickets to your homeschool IF you ordered them before August AND if you live within 100 miles of Dallas. For those of us who either are not within that 100 mile radius or who did not get in on the deal, here are some other options for discounted tickets.

New Internet Auction Site - Great Value!
New Internet Auction Site Launched to Help the Homeschool Community
Homeschool Buy welcomes online shoppers and vendors seeking a new online auction site since eBay's ban on selling teacher's editions.
White Pine, TN With the holiday shopping season right around the corner, fans of online auction sites are introduced to the new kid on the block - www.HomeschoolBuy. com. Homeschool Buy is poised to meet the needs of homeschoolers and others who were turned away when eBay decided to prohibit the sale of Teacher's Editions. Homeschool Buy is prepared to handle much, much more than just homeschool curriculum though; they are equipped to handle everything from clothing, to craft items, to cameras, and kitchen items! Anything home and family-oriented is welcome.
While other online auction sites have popped up since eBay's big mistake, Homeschool Buy is unique because it comes with a built-in market the readers of The Old Schoolhouseฎ Magazine and the blogging communities at www.HomeschoolBlogg er.com and www.HomesteadBlogge r.com. Some of those folks are the exact ones who encouraged Paul and Gena Suarez, publishers of The Old Schoolhouse, to pursue creating an online auction site that would welcome homeschoolers and their Teacher's Editions. Danny Carlton of JackLewis.net is the webmaster over the new community. He has been instrumental in working with attorneys and script experts to meet deadlines each step of the way. The design is also Carlton s creation.
Paul and Gena also hope that their decision to offer an option where the seller would have no basic listing fees will help to encourage people who have never listed at auction sites before to get involved. Unless a product sells, there are no backend auction fees. Customers who are familiar with eBay will find that the set-up is very similar, including being able to create and operate your own store, yet tailored especially to be family-friendly. HSB stores are priced much lower than eBays store options as well. Any vendor can set up shop with their own custom place on the web to do business complete with a very custom traffic base and on the cheap. While the site is designed to appeal to homeschoolers by giving them the opportunity to buy and sell Teacher's Editions, the site is definitely open to others outside the homeschool community as well. Family commerce on the Net.
The homeschool market is estimated to be a billion dollar a year marketplace and Homeschool Buy provides a venue for everyone from individual families to small companies to mainstream vendors to join the marketplace. Whether it's families cleaning off the bookshelves to make some extra Christmas money or a company striving to move products off of their shelves, Paul and Gena Suarez welcome them to give Homeschool Buy a try. Teacher's Editions are welcome!

THSC Update - Leader Appreciation Week March 12-18, 2006
Leader Appreciation Week March 12-18, 2006
To show appreciation and to honor support group leaders in the home school community who sacrificially give of their time and energy to serve home schoolers and to promote home education, the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC) has instituted Home School Leader Appreciation Week.
Request certificates of appreciation for your support group leaders to let them know that they are appreciated! In continuing efforts to encourage those leaders who give so much, THSC will continue to print these attractive documents on behalf of your group and THSC FREE upon request. In past years, some groups have presented these to their leaders at their support group meetings, and others have held special meetings to recognize these people who sacrifice time and energy for their group. |
