The Bible

What is your favorite book of the bible? Most likely, if you are like me, you don't have ONE favorite. But which one or two books do you find yourself drawn to most often and why? I would say that Romans for me really does it. I'm reminded of God's sovereignty which is so essential for my security. Also of His intimate hand in my life. He knows all things up close and personal - and is highly involved. I'm also instructed there to not question Him; His ways are so much higher than mine. I don't have to "get everything" with Him; He has it covered.

A close second for me would be the book of Acts, which I am going through right now. Talk about adventure! You teens out there who love a good, action packed storyline, get into the book of Acts - and it's all true stuff! And then there are the Proverbs, which remind me of the character of God. These help to shapen a godly character. It's wonderful to set the kids up with copywork in the Proverbs. Great way to practice handwriting or keyboarding, plus it is some quiet time alone with their Lord, learning the basics of good character. Strong leader men, godly kind women. This is what our children will someday be.

So tell me....what book(s) are you reading? Or which ones do you find yourself turning to over and over?

Oct. 30, 2005 - I am currently reading through the Bible,

and I am in the book of Ezekiel right now. I really enjoy the Old Testament history, and I also equally enjoy the New Testament. I don't think I can pick a favorite book.

Thank you for the recipe on my blog, Gena. I am going to try it soon! When can you come for dinner? :-)

Have a blessed day! Tami

Genesis, but I think that is because we keep switching Bible curriculums and you know, like they almost all start at the beginning.

For some reason I have lately felt drawn to the book of James. He really lays it out there in plain english (OK, technically greek).

This one always sinks it's convicting teeth in:
Jam 1:26 If anyone thinks to be religious among you, yet does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is vain.

I love Hebrews. Recently I came to a better understand of God's rest and WOW! it blessed my soul. We have entered His rest, His completed rest.

Heb 4:9 -10 So then there remains a rest to the people of God.
For he who has entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from His.

Cease from my own works! God is so good. Thanks for asking this Gena.

Right now I'm reading Nehemiah. But my absolute favorite is Psalms. I also like Ephesians and Philippians and Colossians and Proverbs. I can't even narrow it down to two! But if you told me I could only have one book and nothing else, it would definitely be Psalms.

Oct. 30, 2005 - Cool question!

I like all the Bible narratives, which is pretty much most of the Old Testament, the Gospels and Acts. Genesis is cool because there is so much there that suggests that very early antiquity was a very different world than today. Job is cool like too. I also like Proverbs and the Psalms. For a while there, I'd read Psalm 19 over and over for weeks. When I was younger and would get depressed, Ecclesiastes fills the bill. Now that I'm getting older, I understand that book more and more.

One cool thing to do is to study the geography of the Bible. All those crazy names that are so easily breezed over -- find out something about those places. Like the lampstands in Apocalypsis -- it's interesting to ponder that all those cities are in Asia Minor, which has been Muslim since the conquest by the Seljuk Turks in 1071. And Jesus threatened to take away their lampstands....

Oct. 30, 2005 - Hmmm...

Romans is one of my favorites as well. So much of it speaks to me about going through difficult times, God's constant faithfulness and living by His Spirit daily.

I've been reading Ephesians again lately though. God's grace is so precious to me and Ephesians feels like a big ol' love letter of grace. It challenges me to grow in spiritual maturity and unity with other believers while keeping my focus on Him and not merely following others.

Right now, I'd have to say Joshua with Genesis as a close second. That will change...perhaps tomorrow. Perhaps even by the time I'm finished writing this. I like Joshua for its demonstration of what faith is. If you look at the account of the crossing of the Jordan, you see that the priests had to put their feet in the water before the water would stop. The Jordan is one of the fastest flowing rivers for its size and it was at flood stage. And where they were entering it there was a pretty steep incline. By the time the priests put their feet in, they were committed. They could not "test" the promise by sticking in their toe and seeing what would happen. They had to leap in. I see this in my walk with Christ. Of course God is big enough to stop the waters. But if I never jump in, I will never experience that...and I will never get to Jericho and on to the promised land. And it helps that one of my favorite verses is, "Choose this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Too many people never choose, either for or against the Lord. They are like the lukewarm church spat out in Revelations.

I just finished Esther and am still amazed how God shows me new things every single time I read His Word! I was really struck by Esther's patience and obedience.

Now, I am in Job and am sorta dreading it since I hate to see good men suffer so much! But how encouraging to see his faith and praises to God even in the midst of such trials and tribulation. Also, how scary to think about satan talking to God about any of us!!! The reality of heaven and hell and good and evil almost leaves me speechless.

Oct. 31, 2005 - Whichever book the Lord has me in at the time ...

Which at the moment is Ephesians. I have been very concerned about the church, in this day and age. Ephesians is about the church, and I am blessed every day. A short book, but I found myself having to go back and read it over and over.

I think it is really important when reading the bible, to remember that the breakdown into chapters and verses are for the convenience of finding what we need to find, and of course, subtitles in our bible tell us what a certain passage is about. But it wasn't written like that! We need to take the whole book, and realize it is part of a greater book, and thus get "the whole counsel of scripture."

Dave Hunt blew me away reciting this poem one day, at the Word of Life Family Campground:

WHEN YOU READ THE BIBLE THROUGH
Amos R. Wells

I supposed I knew my Bible,
Reading piecemeal, hit or miss,
Now a bit of John or Matthew,
Now a snatch of Genesis,
Certain chapter of Isaiah,
Certain Psalms (the twenty-third),
Twelfth of Romans, First of Proverbs –
Yes, I thought I knew the Word!
But I found that thorough reading
Was a different thing to do,
And the way was unfamiliar
When I read the Bible through.
You who like to play at Bible,
Dip and dabble, here and there,
Just before you kneel, aweary,
And yawn through a hurried prayer;
You who treat the Crown of Writings
As you treat no other book –
Just a paragraph disjointed,
Just a crude impatient look –
Try a worthier procedure,
Try a broad and steady view;
You will kneel in very rapture
When you read the Bible through!

In fact, I think I'll post this on my blog!

this is a great entry. i like Ephesians. Right now we are going thru Genesis, Psalms and 1st Peter. We read a chapter in each every day when we start school. I'm hoping to do the
whole bible that way with the kids, in incriments. I also like the book of James because it talks a lot about how people should shut up. And I can't ever seem to do that (the tongue is like a small rudder that controls the whole ship -- small but weilds huge power)

The Bible is so wonderfully (and inspirationally) written that it fulfills our hunger and thirst at any point in our lives. Some days, I need to turn to the Psalms to be uplifted. Another day, I need instructions from the writings of the apostles because of a certain issue that has arisen in the church. And, when wanting to know how to discipline a child, I head over to the book of Proverbs. God has given us the answers for everything, and all in one book! Isn't that neat! Now, to pick a specific book from the Bible? Maybe the book of John because it so beautifully illustrates the life of our blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And then, the book of Acts closely follows since it actually tells us HOW we can get into Christ. What a great book! And, to think that it was written especially for US!

We have very similar tastes. I just finished Acts again, and am going through the book of Romans. I also love James. My Pastor had a very cool suggestion for us: just check out my very last issue of Every Wise Woman...and see what it was and print out some sheets I made to keep track.

PSALMS! Not the least of which because so many of them were written by David - a man with whose sinful life but always repentant heart I can identify all too well. When I hear how he speaks of and to God, having done some of the things he did, I am encouraged that I, too, can bring my every thought, my every concern, and my praise - meager as it may be, to the throne of the Holy of Holies and not be turned away!

The reason you may not get as many comments as JenIg is because it sounds like you want us to stop....I mean i didn't even get a chance to comment yet....I'm sure the above commenters appreciate your thank you and all but in my rebellion I'm gonna keep these comments going...see Jen just gets in there and keeps going...but no you..you have to be polite and all...she just keeps her little antics up and starts razzing people even more....maybe you need to be a little more mean....maybe that'll get you more comments...

Having said all that...I really like the book of James...talking about your tongue and all...I need all the help I can get....oh and maybe I ought to read some more of it today after what I just said to you... hmmmmm.... where's my Bible?? ;o)

Nov. 3, 2005 - As my son always says...

"You just can't pick one as the best of anything mom!" My ecclectic diversities are great, I suppose. As I grow and my needs change, so do the books that speak to me most. Currently, I am really into Samuel I. I have wept over and over while reading and re-reading Hannah's story. I could read it 100 times. I weep and cry to the Lord that I might have a fraction of the faith, devotion, courage, bravery, and love she exhibits. My emotions are so raw about this book, that I haven't been able to address it with my kids yet. Ok, that is a little pathetic I admit. A close second for me is Proverbs. Spend a great deal of time there. Then there is James. Oh, I really like Romans. Ok, I am babbling idiot on the loose. I must return to my village now. tee hee! <>< Leslie

Nov. 3, 2005 - Hi Gena!

I love the book of Genesis immensely, it seems I can never reach the end of it (not really) as it encompasses the stories of the beginning and end of all things created. I love the book of Job, for much the same reasons as you gave for loving Romans. Also, when I first began to seek Him, He led me to read Job, and taught me the power of intercessory prayer, that as I turn my thoughts to caring for others, it's then that my own life will be restored, as was Job's after he prayed for his friends. Right now I'm reading through it again, with our kids. My 9yos is fascinated with it, and we've had some great talks about the sovereignty of God.

Esther reminds me again of God's great sovereignty and it so amazes me to see how He saved an entire nation through the faithfulness of one girl turned extraordinary, the potential power of the meek and spirit-led life of a woman of His, the importance of following His timing, and having good counsel. The book of Isaiah, and the Song of Solomon are both so intimately precious to me, Psalms is a constant standby.

John is my favorite gospel, and the Lord has spoken peace and REST to my troubled conscience so many times through the books of 2 Corinthians and Hebrews... Yes, tough choice to make.;-) Great thoughts, thanks!

blessings to you and yours~

I absolutely love the book of Matthew because a few years ago I watched the Visual Bible's Matthew Movie and fell in love with Jesus. Not Bruce Marchiano who played Jesus, but the Jesus he portrayed - full of love, joy, peace, patience...etc. When I read Matthew I can see Christ more clearly.

Nov. 6, 2005 - My favorite book in the Bible

I was reading your blog and just smiled.......picking out a favorite book in the Bible is like choosing a best friend......How can you do it? I guess my favorites are like the seasons of my life....the last year has been the toughest of my life and I read Job over and over. Sometimes it helped and somtimes I got frustrated with it.....

When I think of growing up as a Mennonite and remembering my Grandpa I would say Proverbs. He read a chapter each day of the month, over and over again. Grandma said it started it when they married. He never loaned money but gave it, he built the farm before worrying about the house, he never gossiped and he sure remembered "not" to do the things the Lord hates......

Or maybe when I went through an unwanted divorce and the book of Isaiah was of such comfort to me......I read it over and over.....

Or when Grandma died I found such comfort in the Psalms and that may be because she read to me from the book so often and shared her feelings about the Psalm she read....what wonderful memories!

Or the book of James that my Aunt Emily read so often and always reminded her students in the 40+ years she taught Christian Day School, to watch their tongues and how to care for one another......what an example she was...

I will stop here but the book I like most changes with my seasons and I am glad for that!

Nov. 7, 2005 - How do you pick? And then...

that about favorite passages? There are so many of those, too! I was talking with a friend last night and she quoted some from 2 Cor 4 and how it is being personal to her life right now and it reminded me again of that favorite of mine. But then when I was reading through all the comments someone mentioned about reading Isaiah when going through an unwanted divorce. My Father spoke so clearly to me through Isaiah 54 and gave me healing and promises for my children and my life to keep me going on when life was so difficult. That is such a rich book! Then there is the book of Psalms. I have spent the most time in that book. You can get through it every month if you read 5 a day. You can either read 5 in a row or you can read 1, 31, 61, 91, 121 and on like that starting with the number for the day. You save Ps 119 for the 31st day in months that have 31 days. I usually follow that format and have gone through cycles of reading Psalms that way. I love Psalm 91 and think it is the Psalm for our day and how crazy the world is getting. My Father also made a promise to me out of it just before my life fell totally apart when my husband of over 19 years and father to our 5 children decided to live the "gay" life. He told me the plague would not come near my tent and I saw the word "AIDS." I had no idea what was coming when He told me that. I also love Proverbs and have done them cycling every month, too, for months at a time. Those 2 books have profoundly affected my life. Proverbs gives us wisdom which is seeing life from G-d's point of view and acting in harmony with Him. Psalms helps you to learn to be real before G-d and men and to know how to pray and worship.
I also love Genesis. The first five books of the scriptures, or the Torah, are the foundation of the rest of the scripture and I would have to say that Genesis is the footer for the foundation. Without an understanding of Genesis and the rest of the Torah, we will not really have an understanding of G-d or of ourselves in relation to Him. We will not have a correct understanding of the rest of the scripture, either. We will tend to syncretize our own beliefs into the things that we learn in the later scriptures without understanding the foundation. That is a major reason for what we see going on in the churches in our culture. If we throw out the foundation, we will be shaken in the storms of life. We also will think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. I love seeing my Messiah and the scarlet thread of His blood all through the foundational books and on to the very end of the whole of scripture. He is there throughout it all and the whole book is about Him. We tend to forget that and think it is about us and how to live this life, etc. It is about Him. It is His story.
Then we get down to favorite verses. I love "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You."(Is 26:3) I love "That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, and being made conformable to His death."(Phil 3:10). I asked Yeshua one day to know Him and the power of His resurrection. He said to me "the fellowship of my sufferings and being made conformable to my death go with that. Do you still want that?" I said "yes" and my whole life fell apart. But now I know Him in a way I never would have if I hadn't asked and He hadn't asked and I hadn't said "yes." I would not change my answer or those circumstances.
I have so many other verses, passages, chapters, and books. It would take way too long to say more. It is the most wonderful of books, but the One who is the Living Torah, the Living Word is even more wonderful than His words. I was recently thinking about if I did not have the scriptures available to me and even though I've memorized some scripture, what would I do. I was reminded that since He has written His word on the tablet of my heart, He is perfectly capable of giving me His words even if I don't have the print to read. Since there are so many in this world that aren't priveleged to have umpteen different translations in their language and sometimes have not even one, it explains how they grow in Him. They know the one who is the embodiment of all He has written. He can still do His work in them and give them His words when they need them.
So now what is your favorite hymn or spiritual song?
Love and shalom,
Serena
