Which Came First...New Testament or Catechism?

Posted in Faith and Formation

Hat tip to Fr. Stephanos O.S.B. , who is a contributing author to a new blog group called the Catholic Catechism Dialogue Blog.   This is a devotional and practical dialogue amongst Christians while reading the complete Catechism of the Catholic Church in one year.   Fr. Stephanous writes about  the New Testament as an inspired outgrowth of catechism.  Here is some background he shares about the word "catechism":

+ catechize +
from Latin catechizare, from Greek katechizein "teach orally, instruct by word of mouth," from kata "thoroughly" + echein "to sound."

The first reading at Easter morning Mass is from the tenth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.  St. Peter is speaking.

God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power.... We are witnesses of all that he did.... This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to PREACH to the people and TESTIFY....

Jesus rose from the dead.   The apostles witnessed him, and they preached and testified about him to other people by word of mouth--that is, they catechized others.   The writings we call the New Testament are the inspired, written outgrowth of this catechesis.  Without the catechizing apostolic Church, it is not possible to understand the New Testament according to the mind of God who commissioned the apostolic Church to preach and testify.

Catholics and non-Catholics alike are invited to join this dialogue blog.  The reading plan includes a one year schedule for reading  the Bible and CCC with daily commentary by multiple contributors.  This is not only an opportunity for spiritual growth, but an opportunity for anyone to explore what Catholics really believe.

Apr. 18, 2006 - Thanks!

I so appreciated your encouragement to me on my blog last week. It has been a blessing to see how God can use the sharing of our lives. I love the verses in 2 Corinthians about how God comforts us through our struggles so that we can comfort others. He is good! We'll have to "talk" more because I have the catechism book upstairs and the size of it has intimidated me. I grew up Catholic, had an encounter with Jesus when I was 17 and started attending a protestant church/youth group. Recently, after 21 years God has opened my heart and eyes to the beauty of the Catholic tradition.
Blessings on you and your blog!
Michele
