Try To Appreciate Those Teen Years!

Posted in Family

These two sweeties are not only sisters,  they are my granddaughters.   My younger children are their aunt and uncles,  of course.   When we're together our "play group" is 8 mos.,   4 yo,  10  yo,  12 yo and 13 yo.  My oldest daughter is 24 yo,  so we can sit and visit as adults over coffee while our children play.    There was a time I could never even imagine this scenario.

My oldest daughter was probably a typical teen,  but as my first, we struggled through those adolescent years and wondered if we'd ever be at peace.     I spent many hours on my knees in prayer.  I offer an encouraging word to moms experiencing this struggle for the first time.   The mother-child relationship is in transition.  It doesn't last forever.    Celebrate successes more and  lecture on failures less.   In the end, the relationship is transformed!  There will  be a time when you can laugh together at past events which once seemed like crises at the time.    Despite all my mistakes,  this  "troublesome"  teen has become a lovely young lady,   attentive wife and caring mom,  whose children receive ample love and consistent discipline.

And now my next daughter begins those adolescent years.   But she benefits from having a more relaxed mom and a big sister.   I have been strengthened in the knowledge that God is faithful in our times of need.  And as I know these years slip by too quickly,   I  fully appreciate glimpses of the lovely young lady,  caring wife and devoted, loving  mother she will someday become.

Wow! They are beautiful! Really! I believe my granddaughters are the most beautiful in the whole world, but yours are right there next to them.

All of your little women are so pretty! What a joy to be able to have that closeness with your adult daughter. I watch my girls getting bigger everyday and I know it will all pass too quickly. Makes me want to savor this time. Thanks for sharing!

Just lovely! The teenage years can be a very trying time for mothers and daughters. Some pass through it more gracefully than others, for sure. My oldest was a nightmare, but has now given me two adorable grandsons. My next teenage girl is a dream at 16 and daily makes me proud. Either way it is great to see them mature into the women they will become. Thanks for sharing.

My mom is my best friend. She still doesn't let me off the hook about how much trouble I caused as a teenager!

I can remember when your oldest was still a highschooler and your second daughter was just starting her school years. Time flies! I agree with what you say about teens -- I wouldn't miss that stage for anything.
