Coins Cost More to Make than Face Value

Posted in Mindless Meanderings

Lest I resort to quoting  Regis and Kelly  as my sole source of information on this topic,  I actually did some research.   Sure enough, Regis was correct!   According to USA Today,  the cost to make a penny has recently risen to 1.23 cents and 5.73 cents per nickel.   So if it costs 7 cents to make 6 cents,  teaching my kids math,  to explain the value of money,  has suddenly become more challenging.   In fact,  I'd appreciate it if someone could explain this one to me!   I've heard teaching Economics is nearly impossible for the average homeschool mom ..... I'm thinking this one is a no brainer!

For the first time, it costs more thana penny to make a penny.

LOL! Maureen...I don't sleep, I don't do much cooking and I have a time machine:) Seriously, Some weeks, it doesn't all get done, but at least I am busy:) Thanks for stopping by!

BTW, I heard about the penny thing last week. Sure seems crazy, doesn't it. Wonder how long it will take the intelligent ones to realize we should stop making pennies and nickels????
