This past week my children spent a day in Ireland & Scotland, the following day "Down Under", and a day in Asia. Actually, they spent the week traveling around the world through music.
Concentrating on learning a new language.
Guest performers included a bag piper, and an Australian who played the didgeridoo. A few children, including my daughter, demonstrated the tonality and pitches of some Chinese instruments. Each day they could also dress in something representative of the region they explored musically.
Two of my children learned to sing an Israeli folk song, a traditional Scottish song, and danced a traditional English folk dance with [wooden] swords! Another son learned to sing an Italian folk song and a Czech-Slovak folk song. Together they sang a traditional African song and a Samoan folk song!
They could also specialize in a new instrument. No surprise when many of the boys chose percussion! My two sons were in the Jive 'n Five percussion ensemble.
My daughter chose music composition as her specialty, using a Mac platform for a program called Garage Band. After studying various aspects of analyzing and composing musical literature, the kids had an opportunity to layer various loops of instrumentals to create an individualized composition.
We're lucky to have a prestigious music school in our area, with a prep department which excels in developing musically literate youth. It's awesome to see the kids progress year after year from beginners, tentatively exploring rhythm and pitch, to becoming competent and confident musicians.
