The New York State Canal System is a navigable 524-mile inland waterway that crosses upstate New York. It forms an extensive transportation network providing linkages within and beyond the state's borders. We traveled by boat on the canal several miles including passage through the lock system which resulted in a 25 foot elevation in sea level. From the source of the Erie Canal at the Hudson River to its mouth in the Niagara River/Lake Erie, the canal system totals a 564 ft elevation through a series of 57 locks. Water depth is 12 - 14 feet.

We had studied the history of the Erie Canal earlier this year and how western expansion and extensive trade resulted from this innovative man-made waterway. It was great to spend a day on the Erie Canal with grandparents, aunts and cousins, seeing what was just a week ago, only a chapter in a textbook! |
