We didn't have enough time to get photos of all the cousins or even talk to each and every  cousin at our family reunion.  So we come back every year and pick up where we left off.    E-mail and blogs are wonderful, but there's nothing like a good face-to-face chat and heartfelt hug!

My mom always loved a party with extended  family.  For decades, she and an aunt planned some kind of an annual event assuring we all came home from out-of-town to be together.  Since her death 5 years ago, my sister has spearheaded an annual summer event in our hometown. 

We come from near and far to spend a few hours together.  It's such a joy to see the next generation celebrate their rare visits as much as we always have.   I hope they carry on this tradition in future years even if they need to wheel us to the picnic in  wheelchairs!

How fun! It is so wonderful to see "the next generation" getting together. I come from a HUGE extended family and we try to reunion every few years, but it's difficult. The younger kids have so much going on...I'm so happy for your family. What terrific memories.

Your post on my over-protection entry led DH and I to a discussion about the "big birthday party" thing...you know the parties at outside places. We started rethinking the focus of doing that...when I grew up, birthdays were just a family thing. After our talk tonight, we may be heading in that direction. Thank you for your perspective...it got us thinking!
