Life Lessons We've Learned from Competitive Swimming
In the beginning, you sink a lot!
Swimming straight all the time is harder than it looks.
Lanes are paths with boundaries....
we all need them, especially when we're just learning.
Every stroke requires reaching and stretching to your full ability.
Winning the race is not just "dumb luck",
but the result of many hours of hard work and discipline.
Doing your best has intrinsic rewards.
Placing first in a race is less exciting than beating your own best time.
It's not good enough to "just show up" for your event:
be focused, be prepared, and be enthusiastic.
A gracious loser is a winner too.
Encouraging and helping others to do their best makes everyone a winner.
Long term efforts build intrinsic strength.

Once you are on a competitive team, swimming lessons cover more than the basic strokes. Individual and team goals drive one's efforts: a microcosm of the corporate world in some ways. We're proud of our three swimmers' accomplishments in the pool, but happier with the character lessons they are learning along the way. Hopefully these "swimming lessons" will remain with them, as they develop into fully contributing adults in their own communities and work place.
Team cake for our end-of-the-season swim banquet today.
