The Journey Through Adolescence

Posted in Family

One of the toughest jobs in the world is being a teenager. Everything is in transition. Everything is intense -- even apathy.

Kids on the brink of adulthood have to cope with inconsistencies and conflicts. The desire to be special and different clashes with the need to belong and fit in. The desire for independence collides with the aversion to self-reliance and personal responsibility.

So true. My 2nd just graduated from our homeschool, and these have been wonderful, but also hard years. One of mine struggled with that wanting to be different and special, but yet wanting to fit in, also. This was with the kids at church. She found herself void of like minded friends, except, of course, her sister. It was a hard time, and thankfully for her, one she has moved out of. Change is hard for them, too. My 2nd was very tearful this morning at the fact that there will be some friends leaving for college soon that she might never see again, or at least, very little. Then throw in with this age group--well, at least for my girls--the desire to really find what God wants them to do with their lives; not to waste these years on trivial pursuits. It's so important, as a parent, to really get into their worlds, and remember how hard this time is.
