Are Catholics Christians?

Posted in Faith and Formation

In December, Allen Hunt, a prominent United Methodist Minister, pastor of the third largest Methodist church in the world, and talk radio host entertains,  two questions,  "Are Catholics really Christians?"  and  "Is the Catholic Church the mother of all Churches?"  Listen HERE as he clarifies the differences between Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians.

Last month, shocking many of his listeners, he announced  on his blog,  his plans to enter the Catholic Church this Easter.

Pastor Hunt cited the divisions within Protestantism and his conviction of Christ's Real Presence in the Eucharist contributed to his conversion.   Welcome!

This Week My Kids Are the Teachers!

Posted in Faith and Formation

My kids each have their own teaching roles at VBS this week.

Do you think teaching lots of wiggly little ones, with short attention spans, will inspire them to be better students?   After this week,   I think they'll have a new appreciation for students who follow directions,  accomplish tasks in a timely manner and cooperate with the teacher.   They are back to their student roles on Monday ,  when we officially start our new school year.  Until then, they are having a ball,  sharing their time and talent with the younger members of our church family.

Pray for Will

Posted in Faith and Formation

Please pray for Baby Will.

Friends, Matt and Kari received a report from their physician that their baby has been diagnosed with Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease or ARPKD. Baby Will is due to be born in October.  This is the same disease that took the life of their five-month-old daughter Natalie almost nine years ago.  Stop by Baby Will's prayer blog and let the family know they are being covered in prayer.

Aren't We Lucky?

Posted in Faith and Formation

Two spirit-filled men answered God's call today....

     Kevin A. Muniz was ordained a deacon by Bishop George J. Lucas....

And Deacon Tyler W. Miller was ordained Father Tyler Miller!

Bishop Lucas, Father Miller, and Deacon Kevin  were present for the  Vocations Youth Rally  after the Ordination Mass.    What a wonderful way  for our family to truly  experience Pentecost as we witnessed these men say YES to the Holy Spirit in their lives.   Our Catholic community  rejoices with them today.

And so we pray.....

Christ Jesus, before ascending into heaven, You promised to send the Holy Spirit to Your apostles and disciples.
Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in our lives the work of Your grace and love.
Grant us the Spirit of Fear Of The Lord that we may be filled with a loving reverence toward You.
the Spirit of Piety that we may find peace and fulfillment in the service of God while serving others;
the Spirit of Fortitude that we may bear our cross with You and, with courage, overcome the obstacles that interfere with our salvation;
the Spirit of Knowledge that we may know You and know ourselves and grow in holiness;
the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds with the light of Your truth;
the Spirit of Counsel that we may choose the surest way of doing Your will, seeking first the Kingdom;
Grant us the Spirit of Wisdom that we may aspire to the things that last forever;
Teach us to be Your faithful disciples and animate us in every way with Your Spirit.
Amen.

A Leadership Project

Posted in Faith and Formation

I decided my 13yo daughter should do a leadership/service project for 8th grade graduation this year.  She had to choose and organize her own service project.  I suggested it be a cause near and dear to her heart.  She chose to volunteer to help a local pro-life pregnancy organization.  "K" completed the process of creating invitations, recording R.S.V.P. responses, and providing snacks for the people who gave their time to help her with the work at hand.

The organization we helped dropped off baby bottles at churches throughout the area, which were collected by members of the congregation.  People filled their individual bottles at home with change over the period of a month,  and brought them back to church.  The organization then needed volunteers to empty the bottles and count the donated money .  The bottles have labels and inserts.  The service project job included cleaning out the bottles, placing new  inserts in each bottle and replacing labels.  They also had to wash out any  dirty bottles.  The girls completed nine cases or about 450 bottles.

Although it was tedious work they all had a good time and learned helping others CAN be fun!   My daughter also developed confidence in the role of leadership and the basic skills needed for project management.
