Sep. 16, 2009 - Day Six & Seven
This week isn't going according to my plans.
Yesterday was our first COOP class day. I woke up before 5 AM sick as a dog. Stomach virus. Turns out Big Daddy didn't have food poisoning after all. But my angels had a good time in their new classes. They are already looking forward to next Tuesday.
Today, I'm still not well. Spelling and Math drills are the only things that got done this morning. I crawled out of bed and we took a trip to the Health Muesum for a homeschool class on the brain. My girls drew a brain and my son got to dissect a sheep's brain. They had a blast. But I am wiped. If I hadn't already paid for the classes, I would have stayed home.
My bed is calling me and I hope I can make that far.

Sep. 14, 2009 - Day Five
Well we deviated from the script today. Decided to pull this weeks spelling list from a Bible word find puzzle. Sounded like a good idea. Gave them fifteen words to copy three times each, then they had to write sentences using five of the spelling words. Broke for lunch then I thought it would be fun for them to find the spelling words in the puzzle. Like I said, it sounded like a good idea at the time.
The puzzles are rated for ages six to twelve, but I had trouble finding some of the words. It's three hours later and we just finished the puzzles. We're having a Bible story and a few math drills and we are calling it a day.
Tomorrow we start our Tuesday COOP classes, so our home lessons will be gearing up to full force starting Wednesday. Apologia Flying Creatures, Excellence in Writing and Ancient Civilizations and the Bible plus PE. We're going to hit the floor running. Yeah!

Sep. 11, 2009 - Day Four
You just gotta love Fridays. We had the best time this morning. Slept in late. The kids took it upon themselves to have Bible devotion after breakfast. Recycler read Genesis chapter four, then helped Princess with a couple of big words whe it was her turn to read.
They loved the spelling game with the letter blocks. How I wish I had thrown out the by the book curriculum years ago. After spelling we played two games of dominoes. The first game was just practice so they could get the hang of it, but that second game, we got smoked by Monkey. 150 points and she really started to get the hang of counting by 5's.
I think we're going to make this a weekly thing. I'll have to adjust it with Big Daddy's days off (his weekends are in the middle of the week), but it should fit right in to our no-schedule schedule.

Sep. 10, 2009 - Day Three
So far so good. Recycler read eight verses in Genesis 3 today. We are on a roll.
(For those who might not know, reading is not his thing. He has struggled since Kindergarten and it got to the point that I was ready to quit homeschooling all together and put him in a traditional school to let someone else deal with his reading problem.)
By letting him off the hook, so to speak, this summer and not making a big deal out of it, he has suddenly decided that he is going to read. Praise Jesus for answering our prayers.
The rest of our day went pretty easy. Copy work and math. Working on memorizing this week's Bible verse and learning how to spell the months of the year and days of the week. We ended our day with our first COOP board meeting of the school year.
Tomorrow is going to be a real loose day. Big Daddy took the day off so he could fulfill his promise to Monkey and take her to an Astro's game. But first they all have check-ups tomorrow afternoon so we are going to play a spelling game with wooden blocks and play dominoes to practice addition. Monday starts the hard stuff. New spelling list for weekly quiz, multiplication: review for Recycler and new for Princess, quiz on Bible verse and we start our COOP classes next week.
Now to finish cutting out the pieces for Monkey's Beginner Reader's lapbook.

Sep. 9, 2009 - Day Two
Well, day 2 went quite well today. Recycler read Genesis 2:1-4 and Princess knocked out 5-8 and only needed a little help with a couple of long words. This is a major accomplishment for us as Recycler struggles with reading.
After I went to work, Big Daddy ran tem through their Phonics flash cards and he said that even Monkey was chiming in like a pro.
The older two aren't to fond of the "boring" math, cause they already know it, but I just had to remind them that in a couple of weeks we'll be hitting new concepts and they'll be begging to go back to the "boring" stuff. They are really looking forward to starting the Multiplication Pizza Party lapbook that I got from HOAC last week. I started cutting out the pieces today when I got back from work and I'm even a little excited.
Copy work is working out better thanh I thought it would. It's certainly killing two birds with one stone. Spelling, sentence structure, penmanship, and punctuation. They are even recognizing the nouns and verbs. Now if I can just get Monkey to stay inside the lines on her manuscript paper, school would be a breeze.
Looking forward to tomorrow.

Sep. 8, 2009 - Day 1 of School Year 2009-2010
Day 1 is done. Recycler read 4 whole Bible verses today without a fight or whining. Now he's reading a book to his daddy.
Princess has such nice handwriting and I know she doesn't get it from me. So eager to learn knew things and has a great sense of story telling. Has a real knack for spelling too.
Monkey just amazed me today. Thought I would teach her four addition problems today and she just spouted out the answers like she's been doing it all her life. She has really absorbed the things I've been teaching the oldest two more thanh I thought. She's already recognizing two letter sight words and I've never sat her down and showed them to her.
Here's praying that day two will be just as easy.

Aug. 31, 2009 - Easing back into school
We officially don't start until the day after labor day so I thought we'd slowly get back into the swing of things this week.
Today I decided that we would compare and contrast the book The Velveteen Rabbit to the DVD. Of the movie, my five year old had this to say. "Mommy, the movie makes my eyes wet."
The book while beautifully illustrated just wasn't the same story in my children's minds. They noticed how in the book a fairy took the rabbit and made him real while in the movie the love of Toby is what made rabbit real.
They liked both the stories, but prefer the movie version over the book.

Aug. 28, 2009 - Absolutely Swamped
August has just flown by and I have been totally swamped. The Conference went great and tonight is the Open House for our COOP group. My classroom is finished and it turned out wonderful. I have the classroom I've been wanting for five years. Big Daddy built me a buffet storage unit and it's great.

I'm so excited to start the new year.

Aug. 1, 2009 - Continuing Ed catalog from a San Jacinto College
Just had to write about one of the courses being offered. Makes me wonder if they hired a homeschool mom to teach the class.
Effective Negotiation: Beyond Win - Win!
"This course is designed to provide you with a good foundation for understanding the negotiation process. This course will cover the following topics: when to negotiate; what are the types of negotiation; what is the role of power; what are: influence, knowledge, and timing during a negotiation; why is the Cooperative Process important; how to prepare for the negotiation process and how to develop a negotiation strategy...."
The class is $195.00. I'd find a homeschool family and learn for free.

Aug. 1, 2009 - The summer is flying
Here we are, August 1st already. Recycler's birthday is eight days away. The THSC conference is five days away. Our CCHE Open House is twenty-seven days away. My parents anniversary is six days away. My sister's birthday is eighteen days away. Can I cram anything else into this month?
I'm working on my presentation for the Open House. I've already planned out the menu and decided on the decorations. We're going super simple. Summer theme and finger foods.
I've almost got my lesson plan complete for my Terrific Tots class. We'll be doing Phonics, Numbers & Writing. My 5's will start learning how to read come January.
Busy busy month and after writing up the CCHE schedule last night I'll be booked til Christmas.
What fun!

Jul. 28, 2009 - Homeschoolers of 13-18 yr olds.
I got this email today from www.homeschool.com
Hello! This is Rebecca Kochenderfer from Homeschool.com.
We have been contacted by a TV show called "MTV Real Life."
They are looking for homeschoolers between the ages of 13 and 18.
If your child would like to participate in this show, please contact: TLhomeschool@gmail.com
In their email to me, this is how they described their show...
"Are you a homeschooler with a story to tell? If so,
MTV would like to hear from you.
Over a million American young people are home learners. But for those who aren't, homeschooled kids can seem mysterious, and often what's unknown about homeschoolers gets filled in with myths and stereotypes. On this episode of "True Life" we'll show what it's really like to be homeschooled and we'll help break some of those misconceptions.
Are you an athlete who has to do twice the work to get recognized? Or maybe it's a challenge to get into the college of your dreams because your class rank is "1 out of 1"? Are you about to start or stop homeschooling? Whatever your
situation or story is, if you or someone you know might be interested, we'd like to hear from you. Please include your name, age, location and phone number and email us at:
TLhomeschool@gmail.com
Our goal -- as with all episodes of "True Life" -- is to help MTV's young audience understand why many young people, and their parents, choose to homeschool. We will treat the people who participate in this documentary -- and whatever educational, philosophical or religious beliefs they possess -- with respect.
"True Life" is a documentary series that's been on MTV for more than 10 years. It chronicles the stories of young people in all kinds of situations, from global and political issues like conflict and natural disasters to personal achievements and family matters.
"True Life" is not a reality show. Our producers follow strict ethical guidelines and carefully avoid influencing our subjects' stories. It is also not a news show - there is no host or reporter.

Jul. 23, 2009 - Lesson Plans
With the new roles I have taken on I needed schooling my children to be easy so I tweaked my lesson plans a bit and came up with a schedule I pray will result in fun learning.
Combined Lessons: Recycler, Princess & Monkey
Ancient Civilizations and the Bible, State Lapbooks: Texas and the 13 Colonies, Apologia Flying Creatures Lapbook, Character Trait: Orderliness Lapbook, Song School Latin and Language Arts including Phonics Pathways.
Combined Lessons: Recycler & Princess
Excellence in Writing: Student Notebook A and SpellQuizzer
Individual Lessons:
Math
Math on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Language Arts on Tuesday and Thursday. Ancient Civilizations, EIW and Apologia will be taught on Tuesdays and we can work the assignments throughout the week. Character Traits will be showcased in our COOP once a month so we can work a little here and there as time allows.
It looks less daunting when broken down like this. I'm actually looking forward to starting our new year.

Jul. 23, 2009 - SpellQuizzer Review
Here is my first product review. I've included a snippet off the SpellQuizzer website. My review is at the bottom of this post.
How the SpellQuizzer spelling software works
Using SpellQuizzer you can enter the child's weekly spelling list and make audio recordings of the words in the list. The software then quizzes the child, playing each word back to him one at a time, checking his spelling as he types in the words. SpellQuizzer corrects him when he types in a word incorrectly, and re-quizzes him on any words he missed once the first pass is completed. Just set up the child's list on Monday, and have him spend no more than five to ten minutes a day letting SpellQuizzer quiz him. By the end of the week he will be ready for his Friday spelling test at school. SpellQuizzer is also ideal for spelling bee preparation.
It lives up to its promise. It can be effective in helping children with their spelling. What I found is that having a microphone for your computer is a must if you are going to use this program. You can type in a reminder sentence, but the program can't give an audio version of that sentence like it does with the preprogramed word lists. The student has to read the sentence thereby seeing the spelling word they have to spell.
This program also does not have a practice level. You input the spelling words into a list and then go straight to a Quiz. I'd like to see a more interactive version. Practice sessions that help the student learn to spell the word in question before going onto the Quiz.
Despite not having a practice session option I plan to use this program during the upcoming school year for Spelling tests. Instead of inputing the word lists myself, I plan to have my children do their own lists and speak a reminder sentence for each word. This I believe will be the practice they need before quizzing.
The SpellQuizzer program is quite affordable at only $29.95 and a good investment in my opinion.

Jul. 21, 2009 - Got this email from ParentalRights.org today
|
Blitz Congress Today!
Congress has been very busy lately with health care reform and cap and trade. Soon, however, the Senators and Representatives will be heading back to their districts for a month away from D.C. Before they leave, we want to remind them to protect our parental rights.
That’s why we have designated today, tomorrow, and Thursday (July 21-23) as Congressional Blitz Days. Next month, many of you are planning visits to your Senators and Congressman while they’re in town, but we need all of you to soften them up before those visits!
This may also help us pick up some friendly votes in the Senate, where our efforts are just getting started. A few phone calls could possibly add three or four cosponsors in that chamber before their recess.
So here’s what we need you to do: Call your Congressman and Senators. Urge them to protect the time-honored principle of parental rights by voting for the Parental Rights Amendment – H.J. Res. 42 (House) and S.J. Res. 16 (Senate). Including parental rights in the Constitution will protect more than 80 years of Supreme Court precedent from judicial erosion or international law. Tell them to sign on as a cosponsor to help bring the bill to the floor. (Have them contact Rep. Hoekstra or Senator DeMint.)
You can find the contact information for your representatives by clicking here, and then choosing your state.
We urge you not to call Congressmen or Senators who are already cosponsoring the Amendment. (This will be designated on your state’s contact page.) Send them a “Thank you!” email, instead.
We have three blitz days to give your friends time to join us. So, please call now, and then forward this email to as many of your friends as you can – and ask them to pass it on!
Click here to view this email on-line. Any changes or updates will be posted on that page. |
