School Enthusiasm
Posted in Homeschool Journey
Friday I attended and spoke at the PA Homeschoolers High School at Home conference. I'm glad there is still a month of summer vacation left because I'm still not getting enthusiastic about the start of school. Usually going to a homeschool convention gets me all fired up for new things I can do and should do. I did get a little excited about setting up work areas for each child at their desks, but other than that, I'm still content to be in summer mode.
I'm not sure what it will take for me to get enthusiastic about school again. I don't feel "burnt out" as it were, but I guess I must be if I'm not excited about things like new books, our next section of history, crisp notebooks, and the like. Perhaps another month of relaxing will have me ready for the smell of pencil shavings.
As I type this entry, Rachel (age 6) is playing school with two friends from next door. They aren't playing homeschool. They are playing "real school." I think it's funny that a girl who has always been homeschooled and has all homeschooled siblings and two girls who haven't yet gone to school have such definite ideas about what makes a "real" school. Right now, they are having a show and tell time.
I wonder what makes school real? I know what makes school feel "official" for me. If we get math done, then it feels like a day of school. What about for you?

Just happened by your blog. I had to laugh because I always feel more accomplished when our math lessons get done!
BTW I am also in Pa!

My two play church all the time. (DH is a pastor.)
I guess what makes a day feel like school is if I write something down in my planner and we actually get it done--usually that includes math, and phonics at least.
I am in summer mode too. I want to start near the beginning of August, but I still have a long list of things to accomplish that I know I won't be able to do once school starts.
Blessings,
Karen

My sisters and I always played "real school", too. I was always the teacher and enjoyed telling them what to do and doling out Fs when the mood struck me. I think part of it must be the mystery of what we do not know (what do "normal" kids do in school?) and the satisfaction of ordering people around. At least, that was why I played. =)
Your blog makes me want to be a great homeschool mom one day.
Love,
Abby

I linked to your blog from my friend, Crystal's blog. I happened to notice that you are from State College. I live only about 45 minutes from you (we're about mid-way between Harrisburg and State College). Just thought "what a small world" (I've been thinking that alot lately) and that I should come over and say "hi".
I loved seeing the pictures of your homeschooling students~ then and now~ too cute!

.....my blog!
I am actually in McAlisterville. Are you familiar with it? If you travel 22/322 at all, you might know the Mifflintown exit and Stop 35. We're about 8 miles from there.
I am NOT a quilter, but I did make a few rag quilts. And, now we are working on our 100 Good Wishes Quilt for this new baby. I am going to sew the squares together; then my pastor's wife (who is a wonderful quilter) will help with the rest. I'm excited about it. If you would like to send us a piece of fabric to use on the quilt (and a wish to put in our album) that would be super! You can e-mail me at heidistrawser@hotmail.com and I'll e-mail back with my address.
Thanks! It's nice to meet you!
