Pause for Poetry
Here's a poem for you from today's Writer's Almanac by Garrison Keillor.

Things You Didn't Put On Your Resumι
by Joyce Sutphen

How often you got up in the middle of the night
when one of your children had a bad dream,

and sometimes you woke because you thought
you heard a cry but they were all sleeping,

so you stood in the moonlight just listening
to their breathing, and you didn't mention

that you were an expert at putting toothpaste
on tiny toothbrushes and bending down to wiggle

the toothbrush ten times on each tooth while
you sang the words to songs from Annie, and

who would suspect that you know the fingerings
to the songs in the first four books of the Suzuki

Violin Method and that you can do the voices
of Pooh and Piglet especially well, though

your absolute favorite thing to read out loud is
Bedtime for Frances and that you picked

up your way of reading it from Glynnis Johns,
and it is, now that you think of it, rather impressive

that you read all of Narnia and all of the Ring Trilogy
(and others too many to mention here) to them

before they went to bed and on way out to
Yellowstone, which is another thing you don't put

on the resumι: how you took them to the ocean
and the mountains and brought them safely home.

How did your shopping go? And how do you take homeschooling books shopping?

We're doing well, thank you. I appreciate your prayers.

Blessings,

Dec. 8, 2006 - Snow

We've probably got close to two feet. The ground wasn't frozen when it all started, and I am sure more fell than has stuck.

The temperature was below 20 deg. F yesterday, and is about 25 deg. right now.

Glad your shopping was successful. We did a half day today. It went pretty well, but I was so tired after lunch that I took a nap, and then didn't feel like pushing any more.

My current frustration is looking for, and not being able to find, two books by M.M. Kaye. Have you read any of her books? My favorite is probably Trade Wind (where is italic when you need it?), which I did find. I also like Shadow of the Moon, and Far Pavilions, and those two I know I have, but cannot find. Most of my books are in boxes in the garage/barn (Dh's are in boxes on the porch), due to lack of space and bookshelves in the house. Many of them have been shifted around due to flooding in the barn the first spring we were here. Aaagh! If it wasn't cold and dark, I would still be out there looking.

I am tempted to do your Pride and Prejudice thing. Wish I had a DVD of it.

Hoping you have a great weekend.

Blessings,
Karen

Dec. 9, 2006 - M.M. Kaye

She writes big books about India in the days of the Raj. Her late husband was an officer in the British Indian Army during WWII and later became a top NATO officer. Probably her most famous novel was The Far Pavilions.

I did find my books this morning, in a box in the very back of Belle's closet. After they dried out from the "flood" in our garage, I was loathe to put them back out there and so found another spot for them--which I promptly forgot about.

We have a video store in our small town of 1800. I don't know if it has P & P because I haven't looked. Unfortunately, or fortunately (depending on how you look at it) we are limited to the technology of DVDs--we have computers but no TV.

I believe MM Kaye wrote one children's book because I saw it on Amazon when I was looking last night. I don't know if she wrote any more. She did write a few mysteries set in different parts of the world, and the book called Trade Wind is set in Zanzibar.
