The Joys of Pennsylvania
Sunday afternoon, in between watching football plays, the boys were flipping channels when they came across the public access channel which was broadcasting live from the Pennsylvania Farm Show. They were showing Tractor Square Dancing. Now, just in case you aren't familiar with this event, a large square is marked out in the dirt, and eight tractors (with drivers, of course) partner up and a pair goes to each side of the square. A square dance caller sings the calls, and the tractors maneuver through the paces. "Do-see-do! Allemande right!" It was fascinating and so very Pennsylvania.
Today, I did something surprising that I had not planned to do. I submitted a book proposal to a publisher. No book, just the proposal. We shall see what happens! (If anyone has any experience in this area, I'd be grateful for your wisdom!)
Here's a scrap of a poem I liked:
A Color of the Sky
by Tony Hoagland
Windy today and I feel less than brilliant,
driving over the hills from work.
There are the dark parts on the road
when you pass through clumps of wood
and the bright spots where you have a view of the ocean,
but that doesn't make the road an allegory.

Jan. 16, 2007 - Mashed turnip

Yellow turnip is the best (the little white ones aren't as good--I can still remember the first time I had them. I thought they were potatoes. Ugh). You chop the skin off it, cut it up and boil until tender. Then stick a lump of butter in, mash it up, and eat while hot. Yum! They go well with mashed potatoes. If you have a hard time with the taste, just take a bite of both.
I'd love to post more photos, but I'm reluctant to post ones of the kids, and they are the bulk of my photography subjects.

Jan. 18, 2007 - Reading your Xanga blog

Hey, I'm a tea person too. The only thing I buy from Starbucks is a Chai Latte, and the chocolate filled croissant, if they have them.
I do like coffee sometimes, lately if I've made it. Most people's coffee is too strong for me, and if I drink regular, I get the jitters. Decaf is all right for me.
Have a great day!

Jan. 18, 2007 - Hello

I read your Xanga all the time. It is the only way I know what is going on with you. Hee hee. You don't have RSS feed enabled on your HSB blog.
Hope play practice went well.
I got J because Joni and I asked for letters the same day, so MaryBeth swapped the first letters of our names. I think J is easier than K too, so I'm glad I got it.
Blessings,

Jan. 19, 2007 - I ache, and I don't have your excuse
Posted by OurLittleSchoolRoom
At least you hurt because you fell. I just hurt. If someone cut me off at the waist, I would feel better. My hips and legs feel like I did a major work out. All I did was cart laundry and bags of stuff up and downstairs. Oh yeah, I went way back into the dark recesses of narrow closets to get out large flat plastic boxes.
All that will probably be a blog post later. Oh well.
I do bloglines. It is easy and doesn't clutter up my email inbox any more than it already is.
Hope your aches go away soon.

I don't know what it is like to be a nurse here. I was US-trained, and worked there until we moved up here. Then I jumped through all the hoops--including taking the exam and paying lots of money--to get my license here. I haven't even looked for a job here. I don't seem to have the time. I miss my job in the States, dreadfully--I worked part time in a pediatric office, and loved every minute of it. I knew when I left that I would never find another job like it, and so far I haven't even tried. I keep my license current by reading, and paying every year--insurance, you see.
Curry doesn't have to be hot. We don't make it very hot at all--savoury spices, not hot peppers. Come and visit, and we will make it for you.
I read nursing stuff tonight and cross-stitched. Not all that exciting.
Have a wonderful Lord's day tomorrow.
