My Husband

My husband is a Nascar fan. Dale Earnhardt, Sr. is plastered all over the walls of our garage along with Dale Jr. He owns two older Chevy trucks that he is constantly tinkering with.

My Daughter

Our little girl is 3 1/2 years old! It seems like she was born just yesterday. She is very energetic and curious. She enjoys talking and asks many questions. We are blessed that she is developing a love for Jesus and is seeking to know more about who He is. She loves to do "projects" which can be anything from coloring to crafting or even pre-school work.

My Son

Our son is 9 1/2 years old and he is growing up to be a kind and compassionate young man. He enjoys playing baseball and being outdoors. He also likes to cook and build things. Give him K'nex, Magnetix, or craft sticks and dowel rods and he will spend hours creating things. He also loves the Lord and seeks to learn more about Him. He has made the decision to follow the Lord and be baptized this summer. It is so wonderful to see him desire to be obedient to the Lord.

Have you ever heard of a MicroBible?

Posted in Homeschooling

Check out the Microscope article(The Experimental Zone)on HSB's Front Porch.  Michelle has not only found another great website and resource for homeschool families, she has also been able to obtain a great give away for her contest this week!  It is a MicroBible.  The entire Bible is printed in a 1X1 area on a slide.  That's right, the ENTIRE Bible.  Now wouldn't that be too cool to view under your microscope?  There is also a link to the Great Scopes website where you can obtain a free ebook entitled, "How to Buy the Right Microscope", and a link to see the MicroBible for yourself.  So, visit HSB's Front Porch soon so you can enter too!

Book Swapping

Posted in Homeschooling

While browsing libraries at librarything.com I found another site called swap simple.  You can list books there, at no charge.  You receive credits as value for your books.  Until someone wants to swap for your book, you only receive 1 credit.  It is a "loaned credit".  After someone completes a swap with you, then you earn the full amount of credit for the book and you can use it to swap for books with other people.  You can also use the loaned credits to swap.  You pay the shipping for any items you order and if the book costs more than 10 credits I think there is a $1 fee to swapsimple.com.

To list books, you simply set up free account.  Then you enter the ISBN#, title or author and rate the book's condition and you will be shown how much credit your book is worth.  If you feel you are receiving enough credit, then you just accept and enter the next item.  It is very easy.

I have made my first swap.  I found the book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, by Phillip Keller.  It was only 1 credit and I had 3 loaned credits so I decided to try this out.  I clicked the trade now button and was taken to a checkout that showed me what the shipping cost would be.  It was only $2.53 so I "swapped" for the book and paid the fee.  I have received acknowledgement that the book was shipped so I should be receiving it soon.  Now, if I never have anyone swap for my books, and I decide to close my account, I pay swapsimple.com $1 for each "loaned" credit that I have used.  So worst case, I will only be out $3.53 for a great book in good used condition.

Since so many books are difficult to sell on ebay I am going to try this with swapsimple.com for awhile.  I will keep you informed.  Go check them out!  And while you're there see if you could use one of the books I listed.

Flip Flop House Shoes - Too Cute!

Posted in Crafts

This craft is so easy.  I made this pair for my niece for her birthday.  Her jammies are pink with green accents and she thought they were too cool!  Besides a great and easy gift to make, this would be a fun craft for a slumber party!  I have to give credit to Hobby Lobby for their idea sheet.  I saw this in the store a couple of weeks ago when was there buying my daughter her summer flip flop wardrobe.  They were on the 50% off special that week.  You just can't beat 75 cent shoes.  Here is what you need:

1 pair of flip flops

fleece - your choice of color - 1/4 yd should be enough for 1 pair

Ribbon for the sides of the shoes and for the tops

Hot glue gun

1. Trace around the shoe on the fleece.

2. Lay the fleece on the shoe.  Make a slit at the top to be able to fit the material around the part that goes between your toes.

3. Make a slit on each side and tuck the material.

4. Lift up the material a little at a time and run some hot glue on the shoe.  Press the material down firmly.

5. Take the ribbon and hot glue to the sides around bottom of shoe.

6. Then hot glue ribbon to the strap.

There are so many different things you can do.  Use buttons instead of ribbon.  Use eyelash yarn on the straps and ribbon on the sides.  Put a flower in the center of each strap.  Use ribbon that has pearls or sequins on it.  Wool felt would probably work as well as fleece and may actually be more aborbent in case your loved one has sweaty feet.  Have fun with this project.  Let your imagination run wild.  And email me a picture if you make a pair!

Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma Field Trip

Posted in Field Trips

The weekend of April 21st we went to Ft. Gibson with our homeschool group.  Ft. Gibson is located in Oklahoma and was established in 1824.  This post is where the handled the relocation of the Five Civilized Tribes.  It was Old Fort Days and they had special presentations for school children.  We were able to make arrangments to see the presentations after the public schools had left, so it was much less crowded.  The people dressed in period clothing and showed the kids how they cooked and what the cooked, talked them about firing the cannons and how they could only fire them every 3 minutes.  They could pack the cannon in 30 seconds but the military discovered that they were packing and firing so fast that they were not taking time to find their target and aim.  They were wasting ammunition and they were having more injuries to the men firing the cannons because of their haste.  There was a blacksmith that demonstrated how they made tools to use to start a fire.  The soldiers couldn't carry matches.  They would get wet when they crossed rivers and during rain storms.  So they made strikers out of iron and used a flint rock to strike against them to make the sparks to start a fire.  It was a really interesting trip and anyone living in NW Arkansas or NE Oklahoma should take time to visit.  Oh, they also have several original buildings and homes besides the fort.  We were able to visit the baking house where they had fired up the old brick oven and baked bread for the visitors to try.  They didn't use a thermometer to determine the oven temperature.....they used their arm.  They would open the door and stick their arm inside.  If they could keep their arm in until the count of 13 then the temp was right for baking.  They had one long deep trough that they used to mix, knead and keep the dough in for the first rise.  Then, they shaped the dough into round loaves and they put nine loaves in one pan.  They used a tool similar to what they use to put pizza into the ovens now to put the bread pans in the oven.  They also have a museum with displays and historical information.  Below are some pictures from our visit.  See this link for additional information.

Passover Crafts

Posted in Crafts

As we studied Passover, we learned about the Israelites redemption from slavery in Egypt.  My son found a really neat craft from a link in the Biblical Holidays, Spring Holidays e-book.  It is called Moses and the Red Sea.  The instructions are simple and you can print the people, clothing, and fish needed to make the project, and the kids can color them in.  Here is a pictue of what my 9 year old son made.  He did everything except cut out the people.  I cut while he colored.  It made for good one on one time together.  Plus, I enjoy making crafts as much as he does.

The Israelites crossing the Red Sea

Then, we discussed how Jesus is the Passover Lamb and how He was the perfect, unblemished sacrifice.  We discussed how He redeemed all mankind from the slavery of sin.  Then, I pulled out a box with something I had purchased on clearance after Christmas.  It is called The Amazing Sheep.  You put this paper sheep together and then sit it in some special liquid that comes with it and it grows "wool".  (I never could find the ingredients for the liquid so I could explain what makes the wool grow.)  Anyway, the sheep was going to be used as a centerpiece for our Passover Seder.  It didn't complete it's growth, possibly due to our 80 degree weather and the humidity.  See the pictures below of the progress.  It was fun and the kids enjoyed it.  We didn't use it for our centerpiece but we had a back up plan and the picture is also below.

About an hour after being in the liquid.

4-5 hours later the wool was growing.

This is the lamb we used instead.  The above wasn't really a lamb so this was a better reprsentation anyway.

However you celebrate this season, be it Passover/Feast of Unleavened Bread/& First Fruit or Easter/Resurrection Sunday, remember to focus on Jesus and bless Him with your worship.

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.  By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.  He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

Isaiah 53:7-10

God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called!

Posted in Devotions

Great story!!!!
Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather during this, her first rock climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens. "Great", she thought. "Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry."

She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge. But it just wasn't there.
She felt the panic rising in her, so she began praying. She prayed for calm, and she prayed that she may find her contact lens.

When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but it was not to be found. Although she was calm now that she was at the top, she was saddened because she could not clearly see across the range of mountains. She thought of the bible verse "The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth."

She thought, "Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me."

Later, when they had hiked down the trail to the bottom of the cliff they met another party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, "Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?"

Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across a twig on the face of the rock, carrying it!

The story doesn't end there. Brenda's father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a cartoon of an ant lugging that contact lens with the caption, "Lord, I don't know why You want me to carry this thing. I can't eat it, and it's awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I'll carry it for You."

I think it would do all of us some good to say:

"God, I don't know why You want me to carry this load. I can see no good in it and it's awfully heavy. But, if You want me to carry it, I will."

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

Yes, I do  love GOD. He is my source of existence and my Saviour. He keeps me functioning each and every day. Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him....I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)

Passover

Posted in Bible Study

Passover begins April 2nd and this week we will be studying so we can celebrate with our own Seder at my Mom's home.  I was able to watch part of Zola Levitt's presentation of a Seder on ABC Family tonight.  You can go to www.levitt.com and watch the same presentation.  He also teaches the Messianic significance of Passover.

I will be using the Spring Holidays e-book from www.biblicalholidays.com for our study at home and will also watch the Zola Levitt video online.

Free Play Money

Posted in Homeschooling

While flipping through the April issue of a Parents magazine that was given to me, I came upon a headline that said FREE CASH FOR KIDS.  Well, of course I had to read that.  The magazine has a printables area on their website and they were getting the word out about one of their printables.  Go to www.parents.com/parentsbucks and check out the "play money" they have available to print out in sheets.  They have $1, $5, $10, and $20 dollar sheets.  It is a pdf file so it can also be saved to your computer.  It can be used to teach how to count money or used to give as a "money" earned for t.v. time, video game time, computer time, etc.

Laugh of the Day!

Posted in Fun, Fun, Fun!

I received an email today from one of my friends entitled, "They're Back!  Church Bulletins".  I laughed so much.  Then I printed this, took it over to my Mom's house and read them to her before dinner.  We both laughed so hard we cried.  Read on and laugh.  It is good to find our sense of humor again.  Although, I would croak if I was the one who had made any of these errors and they appeared in my church bulletin. This is a good reason to make sure our children know how to proof read and edit their work.

Strategies for Taking Standardized Tests

Posted in Homeschooling

Strategies for Taking Standardized Tests

The Night Before Testing …

* Go to bed on time.

* Talk to your parents about any worries you might have about testing.

* Limit caffeine and sweets that might make it hard to get to sleep.

The Morning of Testing …

* Start the day as if it was any other day.

* Eat a good breakfast.

* Thank about what you will do to relax after test time is finished.

=================

OTHER HINTS:

Multiple Choice Questions

* Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t understand the question.

* Read the question and ALL of the answer choices before writing anything.

* Don’t go back and change an answer unless you are very unsure about your first choice.

* Try to answer every question. If you aren’t sure, read the question again and then make the best guess you can.

Pace Yourself

* Answers the easiest questions first, but be sure to go back to any that you skipped.

* Don’t spend too much time on a single question. Do your best, then move on to the next question.

Reading Passages

* In parts of the test where you must read passages and then answer questions about what you read, consider reading the questions first.  By doing this, you’ll save time because you will already know what you are looking for as you read.

* When there are several questions about a reading passage, map, or chart, be sure to check for clues in other questions. Sometimes information in one question can help you figure out the correct answer to another one.

Math Computation

* If you use scratch paper on a math test, double-check to make sure that you copied the problem correctly from the test!

* Be sure that you have lined up place value (thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) correctly on your scratch paper, or your answer will not be correct.

* If your answer does not match one of the choices, read the problem again, then copy the numbers again, and try solving it a second time.

“A Matter of Time”

* If any time is left when you have answered all of the questions in a section, spend it on the things that you felt were least familiar – those questions about which you knew nothing or almost nothing.

* As you go back through a section, do not change all of your answers. You should only change an answer if you are very unsure about the first one, and another one seems like a better choice.

* Remember: Your first guess is usually right.

“The Process of Elimination”

When you’re not sure about an answer, try to eliminate choices that you know are NOT correct. If you can get rid of two wrong answers, you have a much better chance of choosing the right one.

“Skip, Return, Check”

If you finish early, check to make sure you have answered all questions. Skim your answer sheet to be sure that you have not skipped lines, or written two answers on one line.

“Key Words”

When reading questions, look for key words or phrases that will help you choose the correct answer.

“The Death Grip”

If your arm gets tired during testing it is probably because you’re holding your pencil too tightly. Relax your grip and give your muscles a break! Please be considerate and try not to do arm exercises during testing – it’s very distracting to others.

Final Tips

*** Fill in the bubbles fully, write neatly, and erase stray marks. ***

Double-check the question number in your test booklet against the answer sheet every few questions, to be sure you haven’t skipped a line or written two answers on the same line. On these tests, it’s worth taking a little extra time to be sure that you are putting your answer in the right place!

Most importantly, RELAX and remember that it's okay not to know everything — unlike regular tests on materials you have studied, these kinds of tests will have some questions made to challenge your knowledge at a grade level (or more) above your current grade.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills

Posted in Homeschooling

We live in Arkansas and are blessed to have very few requirements to meet for the state homeschool laws.  One of the things all 3rd - 9th graders must do is take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.  When I was in school these types of test were known as achievement tests.  This week was our testing week.  Unlike public schools, I don't teach "the test" all year long.  That is all my son came home talking about when he went to public school...I have to know this for the Iowa test.  This went on from week one in school up until the week of testing.

Thankfully, Arkansas has an office devoted to coordinating the testing for home school children.  They post a detailed schedule on the web that shows us what tests are taken each day and the types of questions that will be on the test.  Because of their efforts I was able to spend the first part of March reviewing the information he needed to know for each test.  My goal was to refresh his mind so these things would be familiar to him and not be something that was "pounded" into his head all year long.  That doesn't mean that we didn't work on using correct punctuation, capitalization, vocabulary, math skills for his grade level, etc.  It means our focus was not on "teaching the test" it was on learning the skills he needed for life!  I didn't even tell him he was taking the tests until the day before.  Then, we went together, bought him some snacks to take for break time, and made this a positive experience.  He came home feeling good about his abilities to complete the tests and had confidence.

Would you like some strategies for taking standardized tests?  I am going to share some that I received.  They are very helpful.  Just click here.

Jesus Is The Light!

My daughter told me one day when she was sitting in her room that Jesus was there.  She actually pointed her finger and showed me.  That day she pointed to a wall in her room.  She is 3 years old and we have been teaching her about Jesus all her life.  I even prayed while she was being formed in my womb that she would know Jesus before she was born.  So when she told me He was there I had no doubt.  He is always with us.  Then I found out that she had told her daddy sometime before me that Jesus was in her room when he was in there with her.  She did the same thing....pointed to the wall.

Well, one day in the living room she looked up at our light on the ceiling and said "There is Jesus.  He is the light!"  I had to giggle, because even though she pointed to the physical light, she knew Jesus was the Light.  The Lord has shown her in His own way that He is the Light.  Now, we may have read something or sang something that said that as well. But I think it is amazing for a 3yr old child to have this understanding and I praise the Lord that she does.  She still talks to us about Jesus being the light and the other day she looked up and said, "See how He glows?"  She was referring to the reflection of light that poured out on the ceiling.  I know He is revealing Himself to her in a very special way.

I had purchased a picture from DaySpring called The Lion of Judah.  My mom had it framed for me as a Christmas gift but we didn't take it to be framed until the week of Christmas, so I didn't get to pick it up until the middle of January.  I was holding out for the 1/2 price frame sale at Hobby Lobby.  Anyway, I hung it up in our dining room and my daughter faces it every time she eats a meal.  Tonight, she asked me if that picture was Jesus.  I answered yes.  This picture has a beautiful golden glow around Jesus.  But tonight, she noticed the lions on either side of Him.  She asked me if Jesus had lions and I said yes.  Then I said Jesus is the Lion of Judah.  She said, oh, and then thanked me for hanging up the picture.  I can't wait to see how she begins to understand the meaning of the Lion of Judah!

Teaching our children the Bible/Teaching His Ways

Posted in Bible Study

When I began my research for home school curriculum I knew it had to include God's Word.  The Lord was leading me to separate my children from the world and teach them about Him and His ways.  This is why I named our home school Teaching His Ways.

I came across the Heart of Wisdom website because I was looking for a place to buy The Family Guide to Biblical Holidays.  I noticed there was a home school section and began to read about it.  I studied it for several weeks, going back and reading page after page, printing out articles and trying to get a feel for the teaching methods.  After much prayer and consideration I felt the Lord was leading me to use this curriculum to teach my children.  Using this curriculum brings God's Word into almost every subject - history, science, writing, vocabulary, spelling...all language arts, can be taught using God's Word.  Math....well, I am actually reading a book about teaching math from a Biblical perspective but until I am finished I don't feel it would be right to discuss it.  I need to read the book, pray and see if everything lines up with the Word of God.

Well, this being our first year to home school has been very challenging and eye opening.  In reading the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach I learned that public education system is a Greek method of teaching which focuses on literature and man's reasoning.  I learned that in order to teach my children God's ways I would need to approach it from a Hebrew method which focuses on God's Word and faith.  Wow!  Why on earth has a country, founded on Biblical principles, allowed God to be pushed aside?  Why are we allowing all influences, except godly influences, into our government, homes, churches, and schools?

I attended public school.  I graduated from public school in 1987.  I was blessed to be in a school where they allowed us to pray and talk about the Lord.  While my son was in public school they wouldn't allow him to talk about the Lord.  He did it anyway but not out of rebellion against the rules.  Jesus is in his heart.  It was a very natural thing for him to talk to others about or to question something he was learning and try to match it up to where this fits into the Bible.  I was amazed and I think his teachers were also but they weren't allowed to say much for fear of causing a problem in the workplace.  I never want my children's love for Jesus to become something they are afraid to speak about openly.

It has been difficult letting go of a public school mindset.  The scripture the Lord gave me when I prayed about homeschooling was Matthew 6:33 - Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.  I can go for awhile and stay on that path, allowing the Lord to guide and direct, teaching my children the ways of the Lord.  Then I find myself slipping back into the public school mindset, scheduling like a public school teacher, looking for new resources to add to our current array of things to do.  Then the Holy Spirit whispers Matthew 6:33 and reminds me to stay on the path.  The most important thing I can teach my children is who God is(and I am speaking about the one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  The Lord God of Israel.) and how He loves us so much that He sent His Son to be our Redeemer.  God is the same today as He was yesterday.  He will be the same tomorrow.  He never changes.  His Word is Truth, it is our handbook, it is our comfort.  If I seek Him first in all things and teach my children to do the same then we will always have all we need.  I claim that for their education also.  They will be able to learn all they need to with a strong Biblically based foundation.  They will obtain all the math, reading and writing skills they need.  They will learn history and science from God's perspective not man's.  They will know about prophecy, what has already been fulfilled and what remains to be fulfilled.  They will be prophetically prepared for what is to come.  But most of all, they will have wisdom, discernment, knowledge and understanding.

Lamb Craft

Posted in Crafts

Ll is for Lamb

Made by Autumn, 3 yrs old

Here is a very simple craft to make with a child as young as 2 years old.  I found this craft at DLTK's website .

Materials needed:

Picture of a lamb - you can print one here

Cotton balls

Glue

Scissors (age appropriate)

Instructions:

1.  The lamb shape may be cut out or left on the sheet of paper as I did above.  If your child knows how to use their scissors well or is at the stage of learning to cut out shapes they can do this.

2.  Allow the child to put dots of glue all over the lamb.

3.  Have the child put cotton balls on the glue dots.

Now they have their own wooly lamb!

I used this craft when I introduced the letter Ll during a phonics lesson, Ll is for lamb. This craft could also be used:

When studying Passover

For a Sheep/Lamb unit study

For Easter (We call this Resurrection Day)

Have fun making your lambs!
